Struggles evident for No. 6 Texas as matchup with No. 1 UK awaits

The defending national champs in their rearview mirror and top-ranked Kentucky up next, the No. 6 Texas Longhorns could be forgiven for thinking they could take few relaxing days midweek.

The problem was they first had to dispatch Texas-Arlington. That proved a bit tougher than anyone expected.

Freshman Myles Turner scored 18 points to carry Texas to a lethargic 63-53 win Tuesday night before the Longhorns head to Lexington for the SEC/Big12 challenge.

Bryce Dejean-Jones, Georges Niang power Iowa St. past Arkansas

Iowa State transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones appears poised to become more than just Georges Niang's sidekick this season.

Dejean-Jones had 27 points, Niang added 26 with eight assists and 20th-ranked Iowa State never trailed in rolling past No. 18 Arkansas 95-77 on Thursday night.

No. 11 Kansas rallies from 18 points down to escape Florida

Last year, Wayne Selden Jr. might have let a lousy shooting performance in Kansas's previous game affect his confidence in a high-profile matchup with Florida on Friday night.

That's the difference between being a freshman and a sophomore.

Selden poured in 21 points and keyed a massive second-half run, allowing the No. 11 Jayhawks to overcome an 18-point deficit and beat the Gators 71-65 inside boisterous Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 22 Oklahoma beats Missouri 82-63

    Oklahoma's still scoring.

Now, the Sooners are playing defense, too.

Ryan Spangler scored a season-high 18 points to help No. 22 Oklahoma defeat Missouri 82-63 Friday night in the SEC/Big 12 challenge. Buddy Hield had 17 points and three steals and Isaiah Cousins added 16 points for the Sooners, who shot 57 percent from the field and made 10 of 20 3-pointers.

No. 16 WVU downs Northern Kentucky 67-42

After a disappointing 74-73 loss to LSU on Thursday night, No. 16 West Virginia needed a boost in confidence.

They got it on Sunday night, but it took them a while.

The Mountaineers came out with a sloppy first half and poor free-throw shooting on Sunday night before recovering in the second half to beat Northern Kentucky 67-42.

    Jamari Traylor suspended after arrest

Kansas forward Jamari Traylor has been suspended for Wednesday night's game at Georgetown after he was arrested over the weekend for interfering with a police officer.

Coach Bill Self said Monday that Traylor would travel with the No. 10 Jayhawks but would not play against the Hoyas. He said that Traylor is "a good kid who made a bad choice" and that Self hopes the situation has been put behind him.

No. 14 Iowa State beats UMKC 73-56

Iowa State was lucky that Bryce Dejean-Jones could hardly miss for the second game in a row.

The Cyclones had to lean on their latest senior transfer on a night when the rest of the team struggled to score.

Dejean-Jones scored 22 points and No. 14 Iowa State beat Missouri-Kansas City 73-56 on Tuesday for its third straight win.

Brannen Greene, No. 10 Kansas prevail over Georgetown

The play was a new one, called "Ear," and there's not much to hear about it because it broke down quickly.

So, instead, Kansas did what had been working already. Landen Lucas set a screen, and Brannen Greene hit the shot that made him 5-for-5 from 3-point range, a big down-the-stretch bucket Wednesday night in the No. 10 Jayhawks' 75-70 win over Georgetown.

Harrison leads No. 24 St. John's past FDU 74-52

St. John's marked its return to the Top 25 with an efficient performance that showed exactly why the Red Storm are ranked for the first time in nearly four years.

D'Angelo Harrison scored 26 points, Phil Greene IV had 16 and No. 24 St. John's beat Fairleigh Dickinson 74-52 on Wednesday night.

Iowa State, without suspended star Bryce Dejean-Jones, routs Iowa

The one-game suspension for star Bryce Dejean-Jones was handed out just a day before Iowa State's biggest game so far.

The Cyclones responded to their first dose of adversity with their best win of the season.

Naz Long scored a season-high 21 points, and 14th-ranked Iowa State pounded Iowa 90-75 on the road Friday night without Dejean-Jones.

Texas allows only 27 points in rout of Texas State; lowest since 1945

As usual for the Texas Longhorns, a smothering defense can solve a lot of problems. Especially with the kind of effort that turns back the pages of the school record book not just by years, but by decades.

Cam Ridley scored 14 points and No. 8 Texas shook off another sputtering night offensively with overwhelming defense to beat Texas State 59-27 on Saturday night.

No. 10 Kansas edges No. 13 Utah after blowing 21-point lead

Kansas coach Bill Self rarely wastes time in practice working on free throws. Instead, he leaves it up to his guys to squeeze in the work, whether it's arriving before or staying late, or getting a few shots up between drills.

They must be hoisting up a lot of them.

The No. 10 Jayhawks made six straight foul shots in the final 39 seconds Saturday, allowing them to hold on for a 63-60 victory over Utah in their annual game at Sprint Center.

No. 22 West Virginia edges Marshall 69-66

Bob Huggins challenged his players' overall commitment to work harder on their shots after a sluggish week in practice showed on the court.

Juwan Staten scored 15 points, including two free throws with 7 seconds left to preserve No. 22 West Virginia's 69-66 victory over Marshall on Sunday night.

No. 14 Iowa State holds off Southern 88-78

Iowa State looked nothing like the team that blasted rival Iowa on the road 48 hours earlier.

But the Cyclones won anyway -- and soon they'll have star transfer Jameel McKay at their disposal.

Georges Niang and Bryce Dejean-Jones each scored 18 points and 14th-ranked Iowa State held off Southern 88-78 on Sunday night for its fifth straight victory.

No. 9 Texas routs Lipscomb 106-61

Myles Turner doesn't always provide evidence supporting his reputation as an NBA draft lottery candidate.

But he offered plenty on Tuesday night. Turner scored a season-high 26 points to help lead No. 9 ranked Texas to a rout of Lipscomb 106-61.

Felix scores 17, No. 9 Texas tops Long Beach State

When January arrives, so should Isaiah Taylor, the Texas point guard who is recovering from a broken left wrist.

In the meantime, the ninth-ranked Longhorns are doing all right without him.

Reserve guard Javan Felix scored a season-best 17 points, helping Texas defeat Long Beach State 78-68 Saturday night.
