No. 13 Iowa State routs Drake 83-54

Touted Iowa State transfer Jameel McKay had to wait 665 days to play his first Division I game.

It took just 13 minutes to see why McKay might turn into an important player for the 13th-ranked Cyclones.

McKay had eight points and five rebounds in his debut with Iowa State, which rolled to an 83-54 victory over Drake on Saturday.

Staten leads No. 18 West Virginia over Wofford

West Virginia's Juwan Staten has responded to naysayers with his best two-game stretch of the young season.

The Big 12 preseason player of the year recently saw a TV network's list of top 10 college point guards -- and he wasn't among them. That upset him a bit and he started doing something about it.

After scoring a season-high 24 points Saturday against North Carolina State at Madison Square Garden, Staten had 17 points and 10 rebounds in No. 18 West Virginia's 77-44 win over Wofford on Monday night.

No. 19 Oklahoma beats Weber State 85-51

As Oklahoma's scoring run against Weber State grew on Monday night, coach Lon Kruger knew his Sooners were executing well, but he wasn't aware they were in the process of setting an NCAA Division I record.

Jordan Woodard and Ryan Spangler each scored 15 points and No. 19 Oklahoma scored 39 straight points to rout Weber State 85-51.

No. 22 Baylor holds on 70-66 over Southern U

Baylor made its season debut in the Top 25, then had to make its free throws to avoid an upset on the same day.

Johnathan Motley's tip-in with 6:09 left was the last basket for the No. 22 Bears on Monday night, but the Bears made 11 of their 12 free throws the rest of the way to hold on for a 70-66 win over Southern University.

No. 25 TCU tops Grambling 80-39 in return to poll

TCU's return to the rankings for the first time in almost 16 years doesn't mean coach Trent Johnson is finished building the program.

It means he's just getting started.

"When this thing is built, is when we're having a conversation that we're in multiple NCAA tournaments -- four out of five years, five out of six years," Johnson said after the No. 25 Frogs beat Grambling State 80-39 Monday night in their first game as ranked team since January 1999. "That's when it's a finished product."

O'Neale helps No. 22 Baylor rout Norfolk State 92-51

The only thing that could slow Royce O'Neale in Baylor's game on Tuesday was his own coach.

O'Neale scored 15 points in a 23-2 run to open the second half, and Baylor coach Scott Drew pulled him and other starters from the game with 12:28 remaining.

"Everybody was looking to him, he was shooting with confidence and he wasn't forcing shots, taking bad shots," Drew said. "That's why he was 7-for-9. The only person who stopped Royce tonight was me by taking him out, so he was outstanding."

O'Neale finished with a career-best 23 points in leading No. 22 Baylor past Norfolk State 92-51.

No. 9 Iowa St routs Mississippi Valley St 83-33

Naz Long missed a 3-pointer just 10 seconds into Wednesday night's game for No. 9 Iowa State.

    He was hardly concerned.

"I kind of knew I was going to have it going," the junior guard said.

Long swished the first of his seven 3s only 13 seconds later and scored a season-high 24 points in 25 minutes as the Cyclones cruised to an 83-33 victory over Mississippi Valley State.

No. 18 Oklahoma shuts down George Mason, 61-43

Buddy Hield and No. 18 Oklahoma were able to shake off some early rust.

Hield scored all but two of his 17 points in the first half, and the Sooners shut down George Mason for a 61-43 victory Wednesday.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins likened his team's situation on Saturday to that of a golf scramble.

"We just try to play the best shot," he said about his No. 17 Mountaineers, "and the guy who's playing well that day plays more minutes."

Luckily for WVU, with leading scorer Juwan Staten watching from the bench with an illness, senior Gary Browne got a hot hand late and sparked West Virginia to a 78-67 win over TCU in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

TaShawn Thomas wasn't impressed with his nonconference performance.

He felt much better about his Big 12 debut. The senior scored 24 points to help No. 18 Oklahoma beat No. 22 Baylor 73-63 on Saturday.

The guy on the Kansas roster that UNLV coach Dave Rice placed at the top of the scouting report wasn't one of the Jayhawks' five-star prospects or McDonald's All-Americans. It was Frank Mason III, their relatively unheralded 5-foot-11 point guard.

Evidently, the Runnin' Rebels didn't pay attention.

Mason had 18 points and seven assists in another virtuoso performance Sunday, helping the No. 13 Jayhawks pull away late in a 76-61 victory in their nonconference finale.

West Virginia's full-court press against Texas Tech wasn't as effective as Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins would have liked.

The usually bounce in his players' steps was missing, but it was enough for No. 14 West Virginia to beat Texas Tech 78-67 on Monday night.

This time the Oklahoma Sooners kept their emotions in check.

There was no trash talk, no swagger, no upside-down "Hook'em Horns" sign to incite the Texas Longhorns and their home crowd. For the No. 16 Sooners, there was nothing but dominating basketball in a 70-49 of their Big 12 rivals Monday night.

On a team filled with stars, unheralded Dustin Hogue bailed out Iowa State with the block of his life.

Hogue slammed Tavarius Shine's 3-point try into the stands with under a second left to help the 17th-ranked Cyclones hold off Oklahoma State 63-61 on Tuesday in their Big 12 opener.
