No. 17 Baylor surges past Georgia 83-73 in Big 12/SEC

Rico Gathers doesn't really care if it's the Big 12/SEC Challenge or just another challenging game in his difficult conference. The burly Baylor forward will throw his body around either way.

Gathers had 17 points and nine rebounds, and the No. 17 Bears used a quick start to the second half to beat Georgia 83-73 in a break from the Big 12 on Saturday night, two days before what should be another home sellout in a showdown with rival Texas.

WVU’s Holton suspended indefinitely for violating team rules

West Virginia starting forward Jon Holton, the team’s most energetic performer and arguably its most consistent contributor in Big 12 play, has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.

A press release announcing the suspension was sent at 9 p.m. Thursday. Huggins, who did not return messages seeking comment Wednesday and Thursday, had his weekly radio show Thursday from 7-9. A source said Holton will not play in Saturday’s Big 12/SEC Challenge on the road against Florida (13-7) and is not expected to play Tuesday at No. 14 Iowa State and at home Feb. 6 against No. 17 Baylor.

The Mountaineers played Tuesday without another starting forward, freshman Esa Ahmad, but Huggins was hopeful he could practice this week and play against the Gators. Junior Nathan Adrian is ordinarily Holton’s backup, but he started in Ahmad’s place Tuesday and had a season-high 10 points.

Holton, a senior in his third year and second season at WVU, has started all 55 games these past two seasons and is averaging 9.7 points and 7.5 rebounds this year for the ninth-ranked Mountaineers, who are 17-3 overall and tied with No. 1 Oklahoma for first place in the Big 12 with a 6-2 record

Texas upsets No. 15 Baylor 67-59 for 6th win in 7 games

Connor Lammert and the Texas Longhorns aren't backing down in the Big 12.

Not against No. 15 Baylor or Rico Gathers, the Bears' big man who was being watched by a scout from the NFL's Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

Texas got its sixth win in seven games, never giving up the lead in a physical and sometimes chippy second half on way to a 67-58 victory.

No. 14 West Virginia rallies past No. 13 Iowa State 81-76

After getting embarrassed at Florida last weekend, a local newspaper ran a headline calling No. 14 West Virginia "Mess Virginia."

The Mountaineers cleaned things up enough Tuesday night to win in one of the toughest gyms in the Big 12.

Jaysean Paige scored 23 points, including a crucial 3 with 1:05 left, and West Virginia beat No. 13 Iowa State 81-76 for its league-leading fourth Big 12 road win.

K-State upsets No. 1 Oklahoma to shake up Big 12

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber was so confident his team would beat top-ranked Oklahoma that he had his team practice what to do when fans stormed the court.

Weber should have let the fans in on the plan.

Led by Wesley Iwundu and Dean Wade, the Wildcats overcame a slow start to each half and beat the Sooners 80-69 on Saturday night. But when the final seconds ticked away and Weber's bunch jogged to the safety of center court, they were startled to see all those fans celebrating in the stands.

Ellis double-double for No. 7 Kansas in 75-56 win at TCU

Devonte Graham dived to the floor for a loose ball in a wild sequence that led to a three-point play for Perry Ellis, putting No. 7 Kansas up by 20 points in the first half.

"The thing that he forgot to mention, if he hadn't lost the ball, he wouldn't have had to dive for it," coach Bill Self said with a smile after Graham gave his description of the play.

Still, Self was much happier after the 75-56 victory over TCU on Saturday than he was three days earlier -- after an 18-point win over Kansas State he said his team was outplayed and soft.

No. 14 West Virginia beats No. 15 Baylor 80-69

With a little help, West Virginia has scratched its way into sole possession of first place in the tough Big 12.

How long it lasts is anyone's guess in a league that has seen its share of upsets and crazy finishes.

"We can't get too comfortable," West Virginia forward Devin Williams said. "It feels great. We just have to keep winning out, keep moving forward from here."

Daxter Miles Jr. scored a season-high 20 points and No. 14 West Virginia beat No. 15 Baylor 80-69 on Saturday night.

Niang leads Iowa State over Oklahoma State 64-59

Iowa State almost let a 13-point second half lead slip away on Saturday, but some defensive adjustments and clutch shooting made the difference against Oklahoma State.

Georges Niang scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and had nine rebounds to help lead the No. 13 Cyclones to a 64-59 victory over the Cowboys.

No. 6 Kansas holds court vs. No. 10 West Virginia to muddy Big 12

Landen Lucas rarely gets much credit for the work he does for Kansas, mainly because the blue-collar forward earns his minutes with rebounding and defense rather than offense.

So when Perry Ellis had the ball with a clear path to the rim Tuesday night, he decided to reward his teammate. With a deft flip of his wrist, Ellis lobbed up a pass that Lucas dutifully flushed.

"He was open," Ellis said with a shrug, "so I had to get him some."

Lucas had certainly earned it. He pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds, scored nine points and even had four blocks in the sixth-ranked Jayhawks' 75-65 victory over No. 10 West Virginia.

Texas Tech upsets No. 14 Iowa State 85-82 in OT

Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith knew how a big 3-pointer he got from sophomore guard Keenan Evans.

It helped lift the Red Raiders to an 85-82 overtime win over No. 14 Iowa State on Wednesday night.

No. 10 West Virginia routs TCU 73-42

Jonathan Holton returned from a suspension and after leading No. 10 West Virginia to an easy victory he seemed to understand why he was away from the team for four games.

"It's always going to be tough love and Coach (Bob) Huggins always pushes everyone on the team to be better. He's really the heart of the team and he's going to make sure we give our best and our all," the senior forward said.

Holton led four West Virginia players in double figures on Saturday as the Mountaineers assured themselves of at least a tie for first place in the Big 12 with a 73-42 rout of TCU.

Texas Tech beats another Top 25 team, 84-66 at No. 21 Baylor

Tubby Smith's young players at Texas Tech are maturing and starting to win big games.

For the first time since January 2007, the Red Raiders have consecutive victories over Top 25 teams after upsetting No. 21 Baylor 84-66 on Saturday night.

Selden leads No. 2 Kansas to 94-67 win over Oklahoma State

Kansas was sluggish at the start of each half against Oklahoma State on Monday night.

The real story, though, was how they finished them.

The second-ranked Jayhawks seized control of the game with a 30-9 run into halftime, then used a 32-11 run to finish the game for a 94-67 victory over a Cowboys team that beat them by 19 just last month.

Johnathan Motley delivers again for Baylor in OT win over Iowa State

Maybe Baylor coach Scott Drew can figure out a way forJohnathan Motley to feel like he's facing Iowa State all the time.

Motley scored seven of his 27 points in overtime, matching his career high set last month against the same 13th-ranked Cyclones, and the 25th-ranked Bears ended a three-game Big 12 home losing streak with a 100-91 victory Tuesday night.

Davis sparks No. 24 Texas over No. 10 West Virginia 85-78

After two straight losses, Texas coach Shaka Smart pleaded for his players to show more emotion and swagger heading into the key stretch of the season.

They delivered both in a big way Tuesday night.

Isaiah Taylor scored 23 points and Eric Davis Jr. added 15 and led a flurry of 3-pointers that sparked the 24th-ranked Longhorns to an 85-78 victory over No. 10 West Virginia.
