No. 6 Sooners beat No. 21 Iowa State 79-76 in Big 12 tourney

Oklahoma's Buddy Hield and Iowa State'sGeorges Niang had just enough energy left for a hug.

They had spent the rest of it over the previous 40 minutes.

Hield scored 39 points, the second-most in Big 12 tournament history, while Niang had 31 in a dramatic quarterfinal duel Thursday night. But it was Hield and the sixth-ranked Sooners who managed to hang on through a tense closing stretch, emerging with a 79-76 victory inside the riotous Sprint Center.

No. 9 West Virginia rolls to 86-66 win over TCU in Big 12s

West Virginia finally won a game in the Big 12 Tournament.

That's a crucial step when the ninth-ranked Mountaineers' goal is to win the whole thing.

Devin Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead a balanced attack, and the No. 2 seed never trailed in an 86-66 victory over TCU in the quarterfinals Thursday night -- their first in the tournament since bolting the Big East for the conference prior to the 2012 season.

No. 22 Baylor beats No. 23 Texas 75-61 in Big 12 tournament

Scott Drew thought his team was playing well entering the Big 12 tournament, but the conference was so challenging this year that Baylor kept coming out on the losing end.

The Bears finally got rewarded for their solid play Thursday.

Taurean Prince had 24 points and 13 rebounds, Rico Gathers added 13 points and No. 22 Baylor's baffling zone defense shut down No. 23 Texas in a 75-61 victory in the tournament quarterfinals.

Morris and Iowa State race past Iona 94-81

His right shoulder no longer throbbing, Monte Morris felt good about Iowa State's ability to make amends Thursday.

"The shoulder felt great. We've got a great training staff. They did everything for me these past weeks to get me back feeling good," Morris said. "Yesterday in practice it let me know mentally that I could shoot the ball at an efficient rate."

So, after a good night's rest, he let it fly in warmups.

    No pain.

    No worries.

With no lingering effects of the painful right shoulder injury that hampered him a week earlier in a loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 tourney, Morris scored 20 points and dished out eight assists in Iowa State's 94-81 win over 14th-seeded Iona in the NCAA Tournament.

KU back in Elite Eight for first time since 2012

Whether it was nifty moves near the basket or a jumper that fell right all night, Perry Ellis was determined to do whatever he could to push top-seeded Kansas a little bit deeper in the NCAA tournament.

And thanks to teammates who followed the senior forward's cool lead, the Jayhawks are one step closer to the Final Four.

Ellis scored 27 points to match a season high, Wayne Selden Jr. added 19 and Kansas topped No. 5 Maryland for a 79-63 South Region semifinal victory Thursday night. The win put the Jayhawks back into the Elite Eight for the first time since 2012, when they went on to reach the NCAA championship game before losing to Kentucky.

No. 21 Texas struggles to 78-73 win over Incarnate Word

Shaka Smart got a shaky start to his second season at Texas.

The good thing for the Longhorns is they still got a win and there's plenty of time for a new lineup to grow into the season.

Kendal Yancy made two late free throws, then followed with a tough layup in the final minute to send No. 21 Texas to a 78-73 season-opening win over Incarnate Word on Friday night, a surprisingly close finish to a game that most figured would be a blowout.

No. 24 Iowa State throttles Savannah State 113-71

Iowa State knew it had one of the nation's best players in Monte Morris. But the Cyclones also knew that the healthy return of fellow senior guard Naz Mitrou-Long would be just as crucial to their hopes in 2016-17.

Morris and Mitrou-Long looked as strong as ever in the opener. Morris had his seventh career double-double with 21 points and 11 assists and 24th-ranked Iowa State routed Savannah State 113-71 on Friday night.
