NBA.com Draft Profile OK, so the dilemma with every draft is BPA vs. fit, but also "high ceiling" vs. "high floor". And also maybe "NBA-ready" vs. "project". Well, you might say that Tyrell Terry isn't a great fit, because he's a smallish scoring guard. And NBADraft.net's comparison for him is CJ (but I notice they've just switched to having him go to us!) BUT, some other site had his comparison as Seth Curry, and Curry was our only decent +/- bench guy last year. Plus, Stotts (who is not going anywhere, sorry haters) seems to get good performances out of small shooters, witness Shabazz Napier's good spell for us after essentially being a castoff. Also, you just can't have too many shooters these days. Of course, the main reason I've heard of him (and that he's shooting up draft boards, after a freshman year at Stanford that was not what you'd call eye-popping) is that he allegedly broke a record for some NBA BB-IQ test: Does this mean anything? Possibly not, but better to do well than not, right? And the main problem with Anfernee is that, undeniable talent aside, he doesn't seem to have the best court awareness. So, PROS: aces tests went to Stanford won big in HS: great shooting: CONS: low assists for a PG (only 3.5 assists per 36 - against 2.9 TOs) Small and slight (6'2" and only 160 lbs!) BUT: he's very young (will only just be 20 by the time of the draft). So he should get bigger (and maybe even taller), and his Stanford team was very good defensively despite his size. You can't have too many reliable ball-handlers, and, like I said, if Stotts can get use out of Shabazz Napier, who was also puny but not as great a shooter, then there's no reason to believe he can't see minutes even as a rookie. I see him as a high-reward pick. Plus, he's fairly likely to be available (only NBADraft.net, not exactly reliable, has him going before our pick). Now watch some highlights and tell me he doesn't remind you of at least one of the Currys:
Kid’s got a nice stroke, that’s for sure. The sites I looked at list him as 6’1”. Not a deal breaker, but I’d like info on how quick he is. Do you suppose we’re EVER going to see another Kersey-type SF draft steal for the Blazers?
Smart and a good shooter. Has some toughness to him too. Pretty sure he's not a true point guard in the NBA though. And at that size and athleticism level, the appeal starts to fade pretty quick for me. I think there will be better talents and fits at #16.
I actually like Terry. I watched a few of his game this year. His IQ is truly off of the chart. He play the game like a seasoned pro. With that being said I wouldn’t draft him in the first round simply because we really don’t need another short guard. But I do think he will be better than Simons
Fits what I think is a pressing need for a backup guard who could provide a Seth Curry-type contribution. Doesn't fit what I think is a pressing need to be able to play immediately. Also more than a little concerned about lack of quickness and athleticism. I have this feeling he has a lot of problems getting his shot off in the pros. He needs teammates who draw an extra defender who can get him wide open, at least at this point.
That's why we signed Jaylen Adams! He gets surprisingly many steals and rebounds for somebody of supposedly limited athleticism. How athletic is (say) Fred Vanvleet? Or Seth Curry for that matter? I remember a lot of people worrying about how Luka Doncic was going to get his shot off in the NBA. Now, of course, he's big, but so are a lot of people who can't. See also CJ: if you're tricky you can get your shot off. And if you're a great shooter, people bite on your fakes, which makes getting open easier.
I'm not going by stats. I'm going by the video I watched. It seems to take him a long time to get off his shot and he plays below the rim. He's 160 pounds right now. Comparing him to Vanvleet and CJ isn't close. I actually think there is a guy in this draft that compares to Vanvleet: Grant Riller. Very physically compact. Terry isn't as big, crafty, or experienced as CJ. I don't think he's as athletic, either. That's JMO. I've expressed it and will letter others have their own discussion.
There are things in his game that remind me of Ja Morant. He's not Ja Morant, not on every possession, but he has some of those qualities.
Thing with Lewis is he's one of those guys all over the mock drafts. I've seen him in the 8-10 range. I've also seen him as low as 20-23. His ability to get to the rim is incredible. He's so quick, and the way he bounces out of his hesi back to full speed is amazing. He makes himself long going to the basket; seems to have Inspector Gadget arms. He's also a 37-38% 3-point shooter, an 80% shooter at the line, his quicks play at the pro level and he makes some NBA level passes, even if he still is prone to turnovers at this point. But he going to be a 19-year-old rookie with 2 years of elite DI basketball under his belt. There's a lot to like there. Watching him toast Okoro and light up Kentucky and UNC makes me think he's unbelievable value in the mid-to-late teens.
You set too high a bar creating this one. I couldn't do anything nearly as thorough, so I wouldn't want to waste everyone's time.
Using flattery to get out of work, I see. I watched a bit of YouTube on him and it seems that his elite quality is speed. Pretty sure that would be wasted on the Blazers. Also, he's about the same weight as Terry.
