They are required or what? A fine? This is pretty irrelevant and Biden knows it. Asking corporations to police themselves is a joke. It's likely cheaper for them to pay the fine than to implement a system that would notify customers of any wrong doing.

They can be held liable for damages caused by the faulty product. It's not asking them to police themselves. In fact, that's literally the opposite of what regulations are. That may or may not be true, but even if it was, wouldn't it be better to extract a fine than to do nothing at all? Even if the fine did nothing to discourage bad behavior, it would at least provide some revenue for the government that doesn't have to come from taxpayers. barfo
It's in their budget. This was Johnson & Johnson's calculation when they knowingly sold products that were cancer causing. Cheaper to deal with fines/suits later. We're really digging for compliments if this is what the Biden administration's legacy is supposed to be.
