Xavier Thames, No. 21 San Diego State fend off Colorado State

In a crucial second-half stretch, Xavier Thames didn't miss.

Thames hit four perimeter shots, including two from 3-point range in a three-minute stretch, and finished with 23 points to help No. 21 San Diego State fend off Colorado State 71-61 on Wednesday night for its 10th straight win.

San Diego State ends Kansas' 68-game nonconference streak

It was so loud inside Allen Fieldhouse that San Diego State's players could barely hear what coach Steve Fisher was saying, yet they knew what the message would be as the timeout ended.

No matter the situation, it's always the same.

"He just tells you to think something positive, whether it's basketball, family, whatever. Think something positive," Xavier Thames said. "I think that really helps."

No. 13 San Diego State beats Air Force 79-72

San Diego State forward JJ O'Brien finally got his hand back.

After playing with a taped and padded right hand to protect a bruise he got on Nov. 29 against Creighton, O'Brien didn't have anything on his hand Sunday and he had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the 13th-ranked Aztecs to their 13thth straight win, 79-72 over Air Force.

Two 16-point runs send No. 7 Aztecs to 16th straight win

As poorly as San Diego State shot in the first half, the seventh-ranked Aztecs remained in control against San Jose State because of their usual lockdown defense.

When that defense started to create easy baskets, San Diego State was on its way to a blowout.

Xavier Thames scored 15 points and No. 7 San Diego State used a pair of 16-point runs in the second half to extend the second-longest winning streak in school history to 16 games with a 75-50 victory Wednesday night.

Xavier Thames scores 10 of his 31 points in OT to lift San Diego State

Xavier Thames is building a reputation for coming through when it counts.

It's not unusual to see him make an assortment of plays to pull San Diego State out of tough situations. That ability to put his team on his shoulders came in handy once again in a hostile environment Saturday night.

Thames scored 31 points, including 10 in overtime, and the seventh-ranked Aztecs held off pesky Utah State 74-69 for their 17th straight victory.

No. 5 San Diego State prevails; Steve Fisher wins 300th with Aztecs

When Steve Fisher arrived at San Diego State in March 1999, the basketball program was barely an afterthought.

There was little tradition, little success and one of the best players in program history, Tony Gwynn, had become a superstar with baseball's San Diego Padres.

    That all changed under Fisher.

On Saturday, he earned his 300th win with the Aztecs in yet another milestone in his 14-plus seasons on Montezuma Mesa. Xavier Thames scored 24 points and Winston Shepard had 17 to lead No. 5 San Diego State to a 65-56 victory over Colorado State.

No. 5 San Diego State needs 14-point rally, 3-pointer to down Boise St.

With his fifth-ranked team trailing by two points in the final seconds, San Diego State coach Steve Fisher was all but certain senior point guard Xavier Thames was going to take the final shot for the Aztecs on Wednesday night.

But Thames surprised his coach -- and most of the 9,602 in attendance -- when he whipped a pass to Dwayne Polee II, who drained a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to give the Aztecs an improbable come-from-behind 67-65 victory that extended their winning streak to 19 games.

Xavier Thames scored 17 points, Winston Shepard had 16 and No. 5 San Diego State beat Nevada 73-58 on Saturday night to tie the school record with its 20th straight win.

Wyoming ends No. 5 San Diego State's 20-game winning streak

Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt was familiar with this feeling -- even if it had been a while.

Riley Grabau scored 17 points, Larry Nance Jr. had 14 and the Cowboys beat No. 5 San Diego State 68-62 on Tuesday night to end the Aztecs' 20-game winning streak.

Winston Shepard scores 14 in last 7 minutes, leads No. 5 SDSU

San Diego State coach Steve Fisher thought about giving Winston Shepard a breather just past the midway mark of the second half in a close game against Air Force.

It turns out the last thing the sophomore forward needed was a spot on the bench.

Shepard scored 14 of his 16 points in the final 7 minutes, 14 seconds and the No. 5 Aztecs bounced back from their first loss since mid-November to beat Air Force 64-56 on Saturday night.

No. 6 San Diego State clamps down on Utah State in rout

With Utah State out of the way, the No. 6 San Diego State Aztecs can concentrate on their big showdown Saturday night at New Mexico.

Matt Shrigley scored 15 points -- including four 3-pointers -- and San Diego State used a stifling defense to beat Utah State 60-45 on Tuesday night, the Aztecs' 12th straight home victory.

Cameron Bairstow leads New Mexico to upset of No. 6 San Diego St.

New Mexico's strategy was simple against No. 6 San Diego State: Get the ball to Cameron Bairstow.

Bairstow scored 26 points on a series of jumpers, dunks and layups to lead the Lobos to a 58-44 victory over the Aztecs on Saturday night.

No. 13 San Diego State pulls away in 2nd half, downs Fresno State

Xavier Thames had been struggling with his shot for weeks until a step-back 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer Saturday night seemed to snap San Diego State's top scorer out of his funk.

Thames shot 7 of 12 from the field to finish with 22 points and the 13th-ranked Aztecs unveiled a new motion offense in their 82-67 victory over Fresno State.

No. 25 New Mexico beats Nevada 72-58

Cameron Bairstow helped New Mexico overcome the sluggish start that coach Craig Neal had feared.

Bairstow scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half as the 25th-ranked Lobos rallied from an early 14-point deficit to win their fifth straight game, 72-58 over Nevada on Sunday.

No. 10 San Diego State needs closing run to rally past UNLV

San Diego State coach Steve Fisher described senior Xavier Thames as one of his toughest players.

After the 6-foot-3 guard scored 19 points to lead the 10th-ranked Aztecs to a 73-64 win over UNLV on Wednesday night, Fisher was singing his star player's praises.

No. 10 SDSU rallies to beat No. 21 Lobos, overcomes 16-point hole

It took a 1-3-1 zone defense, of all things, for No. 10 San Diego State to complete a remarkable comeback against No. 21 New Mexico that clinched the outright Mountain West Conference title.

SDSU was getting manhandled inside by New Mexico's big men, Cameron Bairstow and Alex Kirk, and fell behind by 16 points with 12:05 to play.

Coach Steve Fisher finally agreed with assistant coach Justin Hutson's suggestion to go to a 1-3-1 zone. The game turned just like that, with SDSU going on a 19-1 run that helped it win 51-48 Saturday night.
