No. 4 SDSU beats Wyoming 72-55 to match Leonard's 20-0 start

With transfers Malachi Flynn and Yanni Wetzell once again leading the way, No. 4 San Diego State improved to 20-0 to match Kawhi Leonard's 2010-11 team for the best start in school history.

Like that team, though, this squad wants a whole lot more.

Flynn scored 18 points and Wetzell dominated inside with 14 points for San Diego State, which opened with a suffocating defense to beat Wyoming 72-55 Tuesday night.

No. 4 San Diego St remains unbeaten with 71-67 win over UNLV

While remaining the country's only unbeaten team was important to the San Diego State Aztecs, they had another milestone on their minds Sunday.

"It was important because we wanted to hit 21-0 and make (school) history," junior Trey Pulliam said.

    Mission accomplished.

Malachi Flynn scored 21 points, Pulliam added a career-high 18 points and the fourth-ranked Aztecs (21-0, 10-0 Mountain West) staved off UNLV's second-half rally to win 71-67 and break the school records for best start and longest winning streak in the program's 99 seasons.

Mitchell, No. 4 SDSU rally to beat Utah State 80-68

Moments after San Diego State retired Kawhi Leonard's jersey at halftime, and with the No. 4 Aztecs trailing Utah State by eight points, coach Brian Dutcher joked with the NBA superstar.

"Kawhi was near the bench at the start of the second half and I said, `Go get a uniform on, Kawhi, we might need you,' " Dutcher said. "And he told me, `Hey, just win the game.' And I said, `Yes sir. OK, we're going to win the game.' "

    The Aztecs did just that.

With Leonard watching from one baseline, another guy from Riverside, Matt Mitchell, scored 24 of his season-high 28 points in the second half -- including three straight 3-pointers -- to help rally SDSU to an 80-68 victory Saturday night and remain the nation's only undefeated team.

Feagin scores 21, No. 4 San Diego St beats Air Force 89-74

KJ Feagin is rolling with his outside shot.

San Diego State also is humming along quite nicely.

Feagin scored 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and the fourth-ranked Aztecs remained the nation's lone unbeaten team by beating Air Force 89-74 Saturday night.

Colorado overcomes 16-point deficit in win over Stanford

A classic comeback by Colorado, a five-point play by Stanford, a valiant effort by the short-handed Cardinal and an historic start by the 24th-ranked Buffaloes.

All of that was overshadowed by the unity the teams showed after a scary scene in which Stanford leading scorer Oscar Da Silva slammed his head on the floor while trying to prevent a breakaway basket by 262-pound Colorado center Evan Battey.

"Being with another team like that in the middle of a game? I think it was pretty cool that the other team showed a lot of affection, a lot of emotion when Oscar went down," Stanford's Jaiden Delaire said.

Da Silva needed several stitches to close a deep cut above his left eye and missed the rest of the game, which Colorado won 81-74, storming back from a 16-point deficit in the third-largest second-half comeback in the Buffaloes'history.

Mitchell, No. 4 SDSU beat New Mexico 82-59, win MWC title

The San Diego State Aztecs won the Mountain West Conference championship, were showered with confetti, cut down a net at Viejas Arena, doused coach Brian Dutcher with Gatorade and then reset their goals.

    Just keep winning.

Junior forward Matt Mitchell had 22 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double and scored his 1,000th point for No. 4 San Diego State, which beat New Mexico 82-59 Tuesday night to win the MWC title and remain the nation's only undefeated team at 25-0.

No. 4 SD State beats Boise State 72-55, remains undefeated

No. 4 San Diego State keeps winning, forcing coach Brian Dutcher to dig deep for creative ways to keep his team focused.

After the Aztecs beat Boise State 72-55 Sunday, he revealed some of his slogans that keep the team on task.

No. 18 Colorado holds off Southern California 70-66

The Colorado Buffaloes have never won a Pac-12 Conference title, so winning pretty isn't a priority. Piling up the victories is good enough.

"In February you take them where you get them," coach Tad Boyle said.

The Buffaloes got a big one Thursday night.

McKinley Wright IV had 15 points, including a floater in the lane in the final minutes, to help No. 18 Colorado hold off Southern California 70-66.

Flynn, No. 5 San Diego State rally to beat Rams 66-60

Malachi Flynn and the No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs were out-of-sorts for the second straight game, with a second consecutive loss on their home floor appearing likely.

Then the Aztecs' rediscovered their lockdown defense and Flynn found his shot to provide a wild finish.

The junior transfer scored 10 of San Diego State's last 17 points and the Aztecs rallied from a seven-point deficit to beat Colorado State 66-60 Tuesday night and rebound from their only loss.

Mitchell, Schakel Lead SDSU To 73-58 Win Over No. 22 UCLA

UCLA guard Jules Bernard, left, reaches for the ball as San Diego State guard
Jordan Schakel (20) looks to pass it during the first half of an NCAA college
basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, in San Diego.

Mick Cronin might not be so eager to bring UCLA back to San Diego State anytime soon after his short-handed Bruins were given a rude welcome by the deep, disruptive Aztecs coached by old friend Brian Dutcher.

Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel scored 15 points apiece and SDSU used a suffocating defense and 3-point shots to humble 22nd-ranked UCLA 73-58 on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.

No. 24 San Diego State beats No. 23 Arizona State 80-68

San Diego State was so worried about Arizona State's fast break, it sent three players back on defense after every miss, leaving its two big men to work the offensive glass.

Two against five turned out to be pretty good odds for the hard-working Aztecs.

Jordan Schakel scored 25 points, Nathan Mensah had 17 points and 15 rebounds, and No. 24 San Diego State dominated inside to beat No. 23 Arizona State 80-68 Thursday night.

No. 25 SDSU beats Fresno State 67-53 for 7th straight win

Nothing was falling early for No. 25 San Diego State against Fresno State, including a layup that Trey Pulliam whiffed on in the opening minute.

"That first layup was like, ‘Holy smokes, it's going to be one of those nights?' ‘' Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said.

Not to worry. Matt Mitchell scored 19 points and Pulliam matched his career high with 18 for San Diego State, which used a 19-0 run to take control in the first half and beat Fresno State 67-53 Thursday night for its seventh straight win.
