Honduran international, La Liga Nacional’s three-time leading scorer joins Revs on transfer

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has acquired Honduran forward Jerry Bengtson on a transfer from Honduras’ CD Motagua. Bengtson, who recently led La Liga Nacional de Honduras in scoring for three straight seasons, will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his U.S. P-1 Visa and his International Transfer Certificate. He will occupy both designated player and international roster spots on the Revolution’s roster once added. Per league and club policies, further contract details will not be released.

“We’re very pleased that we’ve added Jerry to our squad,” Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said. “He is very well-known within CONCACAF and has been a reliable, consistent scorer for both club and country. We’re looking forward to getting him integrated into our system as quickly as possible and to getting him out on the field in MLS games.”

Recap: Nguyen, debutant Bengtson power Revs past RBNY

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Forget about those last-minute New England heroics this week. They simply weren't necessary as the Revs dispatched the New York Red Bulls, 2-0, at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Lee Nguyen capped a fine Revolution start by firing home from outside the penalty area to open the scoring after 24 minutes. New York striker Kenny Cooper hit the post after 56 minutes as the Red Bulls improved after the break, but Revolution debutant Jerry Bengtson concluded a good night for the home side with his first MLS goal six minutes from time to ice the win.

Gavin still coming to grips with "shock" trade to Revs
    [IMG]

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Blair Gavin took a few minutes at the conclusion of his first training session as a member of the New England Revolution to sit on the Gillette Stadium turf.

    He likely needed the rest.

Gavin is right in the middle of a whirlwind week that involved a trade from Chivas USA on Wednesday, a furious rush to pack up his belongings for a quick move across the continent and a long flight to link up with his new teammates ahead of Saturday's match against Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET, watch LIVE online).

“Obviously, it's been a shock,” Gavin told MLSsoccer.com on Friday morning. “Once you actually hear the words 'you've been traded,' it doesn't do it justice until you get here and you're like, 'Wow, I'm at New England right now.' It's going to take an adjustment period, but I'm excited to be here and I'm glad to be wearing the crest of New England.”

Joseph’s homecoming provides subplot vs. Chivas USA
    [IMG]
Former Revolution captain to make his return to Foxborough

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Just as he’s done countless times, Shalrie Joseph will trot onto the Gillette Stadium field on Wednesday night wearing red, white and blue.

But instead of sporting the New England Revolution’s home colors – as he did for 10 years – this time Joseph will be representing the visitors as he returns to Foxborough for the first time since the Aug. 1 trade which sent him across the country to Chivas USA.

It’s sure to be a bizarre experience for Joseph, who came to call New England home during his decorated decade-long stint with the Revs, but it’s also a unique opportunity for the 34-year-old to perform in front of the loyal Revolution fans and against his former teammates.

Revs blow 3-goal lead as Shalrie leads Goats to 3-3 draw

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Shalrie Joseph marked his return to Gillette Stadium by spurring a three-goal comeback to lift Chivas USA to a 3-3 draw with New England on Wednesday night.

Saër Sène scored twice either side of a Rauwshan McKenzie own goal to stake the Revs to a seemingly comfortable three-goal lead inside the first 21 minutes. Joseph tallied twice before halftime to cut deeply into that advantage before Miller Bolaños completed the recovery two minutes after the interval by bundling home Casey Townsend's knockdown at the far post.

New England appeared to place the outcome of the match beyond doubt by taking advantage of Chivas USA's defensive instability to score three times inside the first 21 minutes.

Revolution hold No. 1 SuperDraft pick after deal with Toronto
    [IMG]

There's a player out there that the New England Revolution want real bad.

The Revs on Wednesday sent the No. 4 overall pick and allocation money to Toronto FC in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's SuperDraft (12 pm ET on MLSsoccer.com, ESPN3.com and YouTube).

The Revolution have never had a No. 1 pick in MLS history. Their highest-ever pick came in 2002 when they took the club's all-time leading scorer, Taylor Twellman, at No. 2.

Toronto FC will hold the No. 3 and No. 4 spots on Thursday.

Rochester Rhinos will serve as affiliate
    to New England Revolution

After months of negotiations and speculation, Major League Soccer and the United Soccer Leagues announced a multi-year affiliation agreement Wednesday that partners USL PRO teams, including the Rochester Rhinos, for the upcoming season with MLS clubs.

Team president Pat Ercoli said the Rhinos will be paired in 2013 with the New England Revolution, who are based in Foxborough, Mass., and will carry at least four Revs players on loan on their roster. The MLS-USL agreement also includes home-and-home series between USL squads and the reserve squad of MLS teams, which are usually younger, developmental players.

Heaps Lifts Revs in Season Opener

The New England Revolution got its 2013 season off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night at Toyota Park.

Jerry Bengtson scored the game's only goal in the 62ndminute, finishing from close range after Kelyn Rowe and Juan Toja combined to create the chance. Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis made four saves - including a spectacular sprawling stop late in the first half - to register the clean sheet.

It was the Revolution's (1-0-0, 3 pts.) first season-opening win since 2009, while it was the club's first regular-season win in Chicago since July 8, 2006. The Fire (0-2-0, 0 pts.), meanwhile, suffered its second straight shutout loss to begin the season.

The Revolution's starting lineup featured four players making their MLS debuts, including offseason signings Kalifa Cisse and Jose Goncalves, and SuperDraft selections Andrew Farrell and Donnie Smith.

Cisse was involved early, forcing Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson into the game's first save when he got on the end of Bengtson's right-wing cross in the fifth minute.

Reis wasn't called into action until the 27thminute when Patrick Nyarko forced a turnover inside the box and slipped a quick pass to Sherjill MacDonald, who rushed a shot which was easily handled.

Four minutes later Reis made a much more spectacular stop, stretching to tip Dilly Duka's long-range drive off the crossbar. Joel Lindpere then tested Reis with another go from distance in the 39thminute, but the veteran 'keeper was again up to the task.

Rowe entered shortly after the halftime break and was involved immediately as the Revs used some smooth passing to create a chance in the 56thminute. Rowe, Toja and Lee Nguyen all combined to slip Toja into the right side of the box, but Fire defender Austin Berry intervened with a late sliding challenge.

Rowe continued to impact the proceedings and engineered the Revolution's breakthrough in the 62ndminute. The second-year midfielder won an aerial duel to nod the ball down to Toja and then immediately received a return pass. Rowe delivered a clever chip over the Fire's backline to Bengtson, who finished with a close-range header.

Chicago made a late push for an equalizer, but the home side's best chance - a stoppage-time effort from Maicon Santos - was comfortably handled by Reis.

The Revs will be on the road once again next weekend when they visit the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, March 16. Kickoff from PPL Park is set for 5 p.m.

Revolution have first loss of 2013 season

Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute as the New England Revolution suffered its first loss of the 2013 season, 1-0, on Saturday evening at a frigid and rain-drenched PPL Park.

Lee Nguyen set up a pair of quality chances for the Revolution (1-1-0, 3 pts.) either side of halftime, but Jerry Bengtson had his 35th-minute effort saved by Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath and Juan Toja clipped his shot wide in the 78th minute. The Union (2-1-0, 6 pts.) didn't register a shot on target until the 74th minute, but made the breakthrough shortly thereafter when McInerney buried his own rebound after his initial header was saved.

It was the Revolution's third straight visit to PPL Park that was decided by a late McInerney goal as the young forward scored winners in the 90th minute and 73rd minute, respectively, last season. The Revs are now winless (0-5-3) in eight all-time meetings with the Union.

Minor injuries to goalkeeper Matt Reis (L knee irritation) and central midfielder Kalifa Cisse (R groin tightness) forced Revs head coach Jay Heaps to alter the lineup which defeated the Chicago Fire last weekend. Bobby Shuttleworth started in place of Reis, while Homegrown rookie Scott Caldwell made his professional debut in midfield. After providing a spark off the bench last weekend, Kelyn Rowe also broke into the starting lineup.

Scoring chances were limited throughout the first half as both sides adjusted to the harsh conditions. Michael Lahoud "" an eighth-minute substitute for the injured Danny Cruz "" had Philadelphia's best chance in the 34th minute but blasted wide when the ball fell kindly to him in the center of the box, while Nguyen sent Bengtson through on goal one minute later only for MacMath to come up with a kick save.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first as scoring chances were few and far between. It wasn't until the 74th minute that Shuttleworth was forced to make save when he did well to push Lahoud's deflected shot onto the top of the net.

Perhaps buoyed by the previous chance, Philadelphia made the breakthrough in the 76th minute. McInerney's initial header from Sebastien Le Toux's corner kick was palmed away by Shuttleworth, but the Union forward was on hand to bundle his own rebound over the line from close range.

Toja so nearly pulled the Revolution level just two minutes later when Nguyen's clever pass sprang him into the box, but his chipped effort drifted wide of the far post.

Chad Barrett and Chris Tierney came on as the Revs moved to a 3-5-2 formation in the 79th minute, but their best chance "" an 86th-minute Andrew Farrell cross which flew just out of the reach of Nguyen and Tierney "" went begging and the Union held on to the narrow victory.

After kicking off the season with back-to-back road games, the Revs will now return to Gillette Stadium for their 2013 home opener. They'll host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, March 23, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

The New England-Kansas City play to a draw

It wasn't quite the blizzard conditions the national teams of the United States and Costa Rica dealt with last night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, but heavy wind made playing attractive soccer a futile effort on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium as the New England Revolution and Sporting Kansas City played to a rugged 0-0 draw.

Both sides struggled with the conditions, which made passing nearly impossible and wreaked havoc on any balls played through the air. Even passes on the ground were at the mercy of the wind and at one point Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen struggled to take a free kick when he couldn't get the ball to sit still on the turf.

"It was just that type of game," said forward Chad Barrett, who made his first start with the Revolution while Jerry Bengtson is away on international duty. "We knew it was going to be a dogfight, especially with the wind. I think I've played in a game like that maybe one other time in my career. It was like 25 mile-an-hour winds. It's just very tough to play in that."

Typically teams can adjust to windy conditions by keeping the ball on the ground, but even that didn't seem to help matters on Saturday. According to Scott Caldwell, low passes were just as susceptible to the wind, and with the prospect of every wayward pass creating a turnover, getting the ball in the air was actually a safer option.

"You can try on the ground - that's what I'd say is the best bet - but with the way the winds were swirling, even the ball on the ground was moving," Caldwell said. "That was kind of the dangerous ball today. We had to stay away from it sometimes."

Complicating matters on the offensive end was the fact that both sides used the wind to their advantage defensively. Knowing that every pass was unpredictable, both teams used high pressure tactics to disrupt the flow and force quick decisions.

The result was a back-and-forth affair in which both teams completed less than 60 percent of their passes.

"Everybody puts the other team under pressure as much as they can," said Barrett. "We played high pressure defense, Kansas City played high pressure defense and you kind of got an ugly football game. Hopefully when the weather gets nicer and the wind settles down a little bit more, we can play a little bit better soccer."

    Revs blank Union

Diego ***undez and Lee Nguyen scored 10 minutes apart midway through the second half and Bobby Shuttleworth recorded his second shutout of the season to lift the New England Revolution to a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

It was a fitting result on a night when the Revolution played its first home game since both the bombings at the Boston Marathon and since defender Kevin Alston was diagnosed with a rare but treatable form of leukemia. The evening featured tributes to both during a touching pregame ceremony and throughout the match.

The win was the first-ever for the Revolution (2-3-2, 8 pts.) over the Union (3-3-2, 11 pts.) after going winless in eight previous meetings.

For the first time this season the Revolution was forced to change its central defensive pairing as Stephen McCarthy stepped in to partner Jose Goncalves with A.J. Soares (R hamstring strain) sidelined.

Kelyn Rowe nearly opened the scoring for the Revs in the ninth minute when Nguyen's low cross found him free six yards from goal, but Rowe scuffed the shot and popped his effort over the crossbar. Seven minutes later Kalifa Cisse went agonizingly close when his shot from the middle of the box flew inches wide.

The Revs continued to press and forced back-to-back saves out of Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath in the 22nd minute. ***undez latched onto a defensive mistake and drilled a low shot from a tight angle which MacMath kicked away, while Jerry Bengtson put a header on target from the following corner kick.

After absorbing pressure for much of the first half, Philadelphia almost snatched a goal just before the interval. Michael Farfan used a nifty move to shake free inside the box and had a clear look at goal, but Shuttleworth came up with a huge save to tip the ball over the crossbar. Five minutes later Shuttleworth was massive again when he denied Danny Cruz as he streaked onto a through ball.

Gillette Stadium sprang to life in the 61st minute when ***undez finally opened the scoring, giving the Revs their first goal in their third home game. Nguyen's clever pass into the right side of the box released Rowe, whose cutback to the penalty spot found ***undez for a cool finish past MacMath.

After waiting more than two-and-a-half games for their first goal at home, the Revs waited just 10 more minutes for their second as Nguyen doubled the Revolution's lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. Nguyen started the move by sending Saer Sene into the box and when Sene's initial shot was saved, Nguyen was on hand to sweep home the rebound.

Shuttleworth made one last important save in the 84th minute when he dove to tip Jack McInerney's shot around the post and preserve the shutout, New England's fourth in seven games this season.

The Revs head back on the road next week for a rare Thursday night meeting with the Portland Timbers.

Revolution undone by "momentary loss of concentration" in draw with Red Bulls

Boston Bruins play-by-play man Jack Edwards refers to it as "the vulnerable minute." That period directly after a team scores when emotions are high and concentration has a tendency to dip.

The Revs were victims of that momentary lack of focus on Saturday night as they allowed New York Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam to equalize just one minute after Diego ***undez had handed them the lead.

"It's disappointing to give up the goal the way we did," said head coach Jay Heaps. "It's right after we scored. We didn't have any time to regroup. It was a momentary loss of concentration and boom, they score. That kills us."

***undez was active all night - registering a game-high six shots - and was rewarded for his industriousness with the game's opening goal in the 54th minute when he bundled home his own rebound from Chris Tierney's corner kick.

But before the Gillette Stadium public address announcer even had time to announce the goal, the score was level again. Kosuke Kimura and Andre Akpan combined down the right side to send Sam into the box, where he made the most of New York's lone shot on target by finishing to the far post.

"It seemed like a little breakdown," said Tierney. "We always stress the first five (minutes) after either the half, the start of the game or scoring a goal. Obviously we didn't do a good enough job taking care of those five minutes."

Although ***undez had a pair of late chances to claim victory for the Revolution, the club ultimately finished a brief two-game home-stand with just one point. It's a disappointing haul, but something the Revs will need to put out of their minds as they prepare for next weekend's trip to Houston.

"It's one point from two (games) at home, which we all know isn't what we're shooting for," said Tierney. "You've just got to put it behind you in this league. The next game comes quickly. We'll look over what we've done well and what we haven't, make the necessary adjustments and look to take three (points) on the road next week."

High-Pressure Game Plan Works Wonders as Revolution Stuns Dynamo

The foundation for Saturday night's victory over the Houston Dynamo was laid on the training ground and in the film room in the days leading up to the match.

Head coach Jay Heaps and his staff pored over video of previous Dynamo games in order to devise a strategy for the New England Revolution's visit to BBVA Compass Stadium. The players absorbed the information throughout the week and then executed the desired approach to perfection in an impressive 2-0 victory.

"From the start, Jay gave us a game plan," said Clyde Simms. "We've been talking about it all week. They did a lot of research on this team and we were well prepared for this game. Credit to the coaching staff for getting us ready and we did a good job implementing the game plan."

The plan called for the Revs to employ a high pressure approach from the opening whistle, something the Dynamo isn't used to dealing with at home. Rather than soak up pressure and try to hit on the counterattack - which tends to be a popular approach on the road - the Revs wanted to be on the front foot from the start.

The approach had the desired effect, particularly in the early stages as the Revs garnered a significant advantage in the possession department through the opening 45 minutes.

"We wanted to come in and try to play in their end," said Simms. "We all thought that a lot of teams come in here and sit in because [Houston's] a very good team and deserves a lot of respect. But I think a lot of teams come in and respect them a little too much.

"We wanted to kind of throw them off a bit and I think we did that. We did a good job of that early in the game, kind of tried to pin them in a bit."

Simms played a major role in executing the game plan as he made his first appearance in more than a month. Although the original plan called for the veteran to play 60-70 minutes in his return, a first-half red card to Dimitry Imbongo and an early injury to Ryan Guy threw a wrench in those plans. Simms ended up playing the full 90 minutes in the Houston heat and although he claimed to be dragging by the final whistle, he still earned well-deserved plaudits from his head coach.

"Clyde was awesome tonight," said Heaps. "He ran as hard as he could, as fast as he could the entire match. You take your hat off to a player like that. He hasn't played 90 in a while. We were just excited to get him in this type of game. The idea was to really high pressure and try to win the ball a lot in midfield. Clyde did an excellent job of that."

    Revolution wins 2-0

Juan Agudelo and Diego ***undez both scored for the second straight week to guide the New England Revolution to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on a rainy and raw Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

After coming off the bench to score on his Revolution debut last weekend in Houston, Agudelo made his first start with the club against TFC and once again sealed the full three points with a late goal. And once again it was ***undez who scored what proved to be the game winner as he took his goal-scoring streak up to three games with a fantastic strike midway through the first half.

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth needed to make just two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and lift the Revs (4-4-4, 16 pts.) to back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Toronto FC (1-7-4, 7 pts.) suffered its fifth straight loss and had its winless run extended to 10 games (0-6-4), but it was the first time this season the Canadian club was defeated by more than a single goal.

***undez brought the home fans to their feet in the 23rdminute when he gave the Revolution a deserved 1-0 lead. Tierney's left-wing cross deep to the back post found a lurking ***undez, who lashed a full volley back across the face goal and into the far-side netting.

Toronto's best chance of the first half arrived in the 15thminute when Jeremy Brockie pounced on a Stephen McCarthy turnover and raced in alone, but Shuttleworth was quick off his line to stifle the shot.

Carrying a lead into halftime for the first time this season, the Revs went about the task of trying to extend their advantage after the break. They almost did so in the 60thminute when Lee Nguyen struck the underside of the crossbar with a long-range drive before Tierney's effort moments later was saved by Joe Bendik.

Insurance finally arrived in the third minute of stoppage time when Saer Sene received a throw-in from Kelyn Rowe before dancing his way along the endline and sipping a pass to Agudelo, who redirected the ball into the far upper corner to put the result beyond doubt.

The Revs will begin their 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign on Tuesday, May 28, when they'll visit the affiliate Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) at Sahlen's Stadium. League action resumes the following weekend when the Revs host the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, June 2.

    New England Revolution 5
    LA Galaxy 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The LA Galaxy dominated the ball, but the New England Revolution were the ones who found the net – repeatedly – as they demolished the defending champions by a 5-0 count at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Behind a goal and two assists each from Diego ***undez and second-half substitute Kelyn Rowe, the Revs scored four times in the second 45 to win their third straight league game and left the shorthanded Galaxy wondering how their edge in possession failed to replicate their four-goal form from last weekend's rout of Seattle.

    Revolution play to a draw

Bobby Shuttleworth needed to make just one save as the New England Revolution's league-best defense was stellar yet again in a 0-0 draw with D.C. United on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

The draw snapped the Revolution's three-game winning streak but did extend the club's unbeaten run to five games (3-0-2), while D.C. United's club-record winless run has now reached 12 matches (0-9-3).

Shuttleworth's clean sheet was his seventh of the season - and New England's league-leading ninth of the campaign - and extended the Revolution's shutout streak to 395 minutes, the longest in team history. The Revs have now kept four straight clean sheets and haven't conceded a goal since May 11.

Chances were limited in the opening stages as both teams lacked sharpness in the final third, but the game began to open up as the first half progressed. Scott Caldwell and Juan Toja forced a pair of saves out of D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid near the half-hour mark, sandwiched around a Chris Pontius effort which Shuttleworth was alert to kick away at the near post.

The Revs made a pair of attack-minded changes early in the second half - bringing on Kelyn Rowe and Chad Barrett - and almost found a goal in the immediate aftermath. Diego ***undez saw his rising shot fly just over the crossbar after a mazy run through the middle, while Chris Tierney struck the near post with a right-footed effort just one minute later.

Hamid made two quality saves in the closing stages, denying Lee Nguyen in the 88th minute and Rowe just two minutes later, while United midfielder Perry Kitchen headed wide from a promising position in stoppage time as neither side managed to make the breakthrough.

Next up for the Revs is a fourth-round U.S. Open Cup meeting with the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, June 12, which the Revolution will host at Harvard University's Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. The Revs will return to league action next weekend when they visit Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place.

Barrett's Late Goal Lifts Revs to Tie

Chad Barrett made the most of a brief substitute appearance on Saturday night at StubHub Center, scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute to help the New England Revolution earn a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA.

Barrett entered the game in the 83rd minute and needed just five minutes to make his mark, bundling home a cross from Diego ***undez to cancel out a first-half goal from Laurent Courtois.

The equalizer was a just reward for the Revs (5-5-6, 21 pts.), who controlled almost 70 percent of the possession in the second half and generated six shots on target in the second 45 minutes. Chivas USA (3-10-3, 12 pts.) snapped a seven-game losing streak with the draw, but saw its winless run reach 11 games (0-9-2).

Former Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo was unavailable to face his old club after suffering a sprained knee in the midweek Open Cup loss to D.C. United, while right back Andrew Farrell was suspended following his red card in the Revolution's last league match in Vancouver.

From the opening whistle Chivas USA showed it wasn't afraid to unleash shots from distance and it paid off with the opening goal in the 18th minute. Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth first parried away a long-distance effort, but the ball eventually found its way to Courtois and the Frenchman drilled a 20-yard shot under the crossbar.

New England almost equalized just two minutes later when Lee Nguyen sailed a 35-yard free kick which skimmed the top of the crossbar, but that proved to be the closest the Revolution came to scoring in a sloppy first half.

The Revs began the second half with a bit more energy and controlled the tempo as Chivas USA often sat back in a defensive shell. Chris Tierney forced a strong save from Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy just three minutes after the break, while Jerry Bengtson was denied by Kennedy from a tight angle in the 59th minute.

***undez, Stephen McCarthy and Saer Sene were also denied by Kennedy before Barrett finally made the breakthrough in the 88th minute. It was ***undez who delivered the killer cross and Barrett got just enough on his shot to see it trickle over the line and help the Revs claim their third result from four West Coast trips in 2013.

The Revs return home for their next two matches, beginning next weekend when they'll host the San Jose Earthquakes at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

With the draw on Saturday, the Revs moved to 5-7-4 overall against Chivas USA

Saturday's draw also extended the Revs winless streak against Chivas to seven games (0-5-2) dating back to September 13, 2009

Chad Barrett scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute ... it was his second goal of the season

Diego ***undez recorded his fourth assist on the season ... ***undez is second on the team in assists, trailing only Kelyn Rowe (five)

Scott Caldwell earned his first career assist as a member of the Revs ... Caldwell played ***undez out wide who set up Barrett for the game-tying goal

Jose Goncalves played all 90 minutes again on Saturday against Chivas ... Goncalves is the only remaining player on the Revs who has started and played every minute

Juan Agudelo missed his first game since his Revs debut (May 18 at Houston) with a right knee injury ... Agudelo had appeared in the previous five matches for the Revs

Saturday marked Jerry Bengtson's first start since May 25, a 2-0 win over Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium

Saturday also marked Clyde Simms' first appearance since a start against Houston on May 18, a 2-0 win at BBVA Compass Stadium

Ryan Guy made his first start at right back since starting the team's final three games of 2012 ... the Revs went 2-1-0 in that stretch and conceded just one goal

With the start by Guy at right back, the Revs have now used nine different starters (Soares, McCarthy, Goncalves, Alston, Tierney, Farrell, Barnes, Duckett and Guy) on the backline through 16 games this season

After giving up just one goal against Chivas on Saturday, the Revs have now held opponents scoreless or to one goal in 13 of 16 league games this season

The Revs return to action next Saturday July 6 at home against the San Jose Earthquakes ... kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Heaps: "We weren't good enough; it's on us"

The New England Revolution had reason to be upset with outside factors following Saturday night's frustrating 2-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo.

Two legitimate penalty claims were turned away in the second half as Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell raised his arm to block a shot from Lee Nguyen and goalkeeper Tally Hall appeared to cut down Dimitry Imbongo inside the box. The Revs suffered 15 fouls, but only one yellow card was handed out to a Dynamo player.

But in the aftermath - as the Dynamo tightened its grip on the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference - the Revs mostly voiced disappointment in themselves for not responding to adversity in the method required.

"It was really physical really early," said head coach Jay Heaps. "Lee Nguyen got whacked hard two or three times by Ricardo Clark. You can only play; you need a little help once in a while. You need the man in the middle to say, "˜guys, we're going to play today.' When that doesn't happen, we need a reaction and we didn't get it from ourselves. That's what disappoints me.

"Unfortunately it's hard sometimes, but we weren't good enough. It's on us; the onus is on us. We've got to be stronger and we've got to be better."

The Revs were prepared for a physical game plan from the Dynamo, but struggled to react when the physicality went mostly unpunished. They failed to capitalize on the few set-piece opportunities provided them in the final third and eventually succumbed to a pair of long-range rockets from Adam Moffat.

"They obviously had a game plan and that was to disrupt us at midfield and put us under pressure," said Chris Tierney, who was left with a gash on his right ear after a first-half elbow from Moffat. "It was tough to deal with. Credit to them; they're a physical team and I don't think we dealt with that as well as we could have, but I thought we had some decent times in the game where we put some things together. Overall, I'm not sure we were good enough to take three (points)."
