    Revolution blank Columbus

Jose Goncalves scored his first-ever MLS goal and Diego ***undez added an insurance tally three minutes later as the New England Revolution scored twice in stoppage time to claim a 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew Saturday night at Crew Stadium.

Deadlocked at 0-0 entering stoppage time - four minutes as added by refereeEdvinJurisevic- the Revolution (7-7-6, 27 pts.) converted a corner kick in the 91stminute. Off Lee Nguyen's corner kick service, Goncalves headed a ball past Crew goalkeeper AndyGruenebaum as A.J. Soares flashed in front of him, putting the Revs up 1-0.

Columbus (6-9-5, 24 pts.) tried to build out of the back for the equalizer as stoppage time wound down, but three minutes later Crew defender Chad Marshall left a lazy back pass at the edge of the Revs' attacking third, and Nguyen pounced, sending ***undez in onGruenebaumalone. The 18-year-old beat the keeper as he came out to cut down the angle, giving New England the final 2-0 lead. It was the teenager's team-leading sixth goal of the season, and capped Nguyen's second two-assist game in four matches.

The win snapped the Revs' modest two-game losing streak, and gave the team its third win on the road this season - its most since 2009 when the team went 4-6-5 away from Gillette Stadium. The Revs are now 3-4-3 in away games this year.

The shutout was the Revolution's 11thon the season, which set a new club record for shutouts in a season in only the 20thmatch - of 34 - of the year. It was also Bobby Shuttleworth's ninth shutout of the year, the most by a single goalkeeper since Matt Reis recorded 10 in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Goncalves' game-winning goal in stoppage time was the team's first injury-time game-winner since July 16, 2005 - a Taylor Twellman goal to give the Revs a 3-2 win over Dallas at Gillette Stadium.

The Revolution made significant changes to the lineup after Wednesday's loss in Colorado. A total of six different starters were added, while one other player changed positions. Because of a head laceration suffered on Wednesday, Stephen McCarthy did not dress tonight and A.J. Soares moved into a central defender spot in his place.

In the midfield, all five positions changed. Clyde Simms came in at the holding midfielder spot, while Scott Caldwell, one of the few hold-over starters, advanced to an attacking midfielder role from his usual deeper spot. Chris Tierney, who did not travel to Colorado because of knee irritation, came on at left midfield, while Chad Barrett played wide right. Kelyn Rowe also came back to the starting lineup in a central midfield role, while Dimitry Imbongo - who was suspended last game while serving a red card suspension - replaced Jerry Bengtson up top.

The Revs had their first chance of the night in the 23rdminute when Barrett flicked a pass to Imbongo coming down the right wing. The Congo native got a clean cross through the box to a streaking, unmarked Tierney outside the far post, but the midfieldermis-hit the ball and sent his shot wide of the post.

Two minutes later, the Revolution thought they had a shout for a penalty when Imbongo got tangled with Danny O'Rourke on his turn in the box and went to ground, butJurisevicdeclined to make the call.

Columbus' AaronSchoenfeldwas forced off the field with an apparent shoulder injury in the 36thminute. He landed awkwardly after being tackled by Goncalves, forcing the Crew to make a change when BenSpeascame on for the forward. One minute later, Columbus went close when ChadBarson'sfirst-timer off a cleared free kick was deflected and bounded just wide of Shuttleworth's goal.

The Revs, who narrowly trailed possession 52 percent to 48 percent in the first half, had one last chance in stoppage time to close the stanza. Imbongo drew a foul at the edge of the attacking third and Tierney's free kick was deflected, but picked up by the Revs. Goncalves got the ball unmarked in the near corner of the box, turned and launched a low left-footed blast, but it was narrowly wide of the near post withGruenebaumon alert.

At the break, Columbus had a 10 to four advantage in shots, but the Revs had the only shot on target - by Rowe in the ninth minute. While Shuttleworth was busy clearing traffic throughout the first half, he was not called on for a save, whileGruenebaumhad one save.

With little to show for the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Revs brought in Nguyen for Simms, adding another attacking option for the final 30 minutes.

Columbus, however, had their best chance of the second half in the 66thminute when BernardoAnorgot on the end of a deep FedericoHiguainfree kick, but his headed ball was straight to Shuttleworth.

DominicOdurohad a go for Columbus in the 70thminute when he got on the end of aSpeaslobbed cross over the box.Odurorushed his first-time shot and his stroke sailed high of Shuttleworth's goal.

The Revs braced to go down a man in the 70thminute when Andrew Farrell tackledBarsonand the Crew defender went flying head over feet. However,JurisevicwhistledBarsonfor a dive, rather than show Farrell his second yellow of the match, much to the dismay of the Crew Stadium crowd.

A number of substitutions - including Nguyen, ***undez in the 69thminute and Toja in the 82ndminute for the Revs - opened the game up as both teams fought for the first goal as time wound down.

However, it wasn't until stoppage time when Goncalves finally broke through the Crew's defense that the back-and-forth nature of the final 20 minutes paid off.

The Revolution returns to action on Saturday, July 27, when they travel to face D.C. United at RFK Stadium in Washington. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on TV by Comcast SportsNet and on the radio by 98.5 The Sports Hub.

    Revs double-up on D.C. United

After training 1-0 at halftime, Dimitry Imbongo and Diego ***undez scored in the second half to lead the New England Revolution to a 2-1 victory against D.C. United at RFK Stadium tonight.

Tonight's win was the Revs' first victory both when their opponents scored first and when trailing at the half.

Luis Silva gave United a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when his long-distance shot snuck past Bobby Shuttleworth, but Imbongo leveled in the 55th minute and ***undez scored his fourth game-winning goal of the year eight minutes later to lift the Revs' to their first victory against D.C. since 2011.

Also tonight, Revs defender Kevin Alston "" who has missed the last four months of the season while receiving treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a rare but treatable form of leukemia "" returned to the field for the first time since March 30. In front of more than 50 family and friends in his hometown, Alston checked into the game in the 84th minute at left back and played the final 10 minutes of action.

After making six changes to the line-up in the last outing, head coach Jay Heaps returned to one of his more regular starting groups tonight, making four changes. Stephen McCarthy slotted back in at center back after sitting out last Saturday's game with a head laceration. Chris Tierney returned to left back after starting at left midfield last game, while Diego ***undez came back in to the lineup at the left wing. Lee Nguyen slotted back into central midfielder for Scott Caldwell, while Saer Sene returned to the right win after missing two games with a hip contusion.

Kyle Porter had United's first chance in the seventh minute when he evaded several Revs defenders and advanced deep into the box, but his shot back across the face of goal was just wide of the far post.

D.C. didn't waste time after Porter's effort as Silva took a long through ball from John Thorrington and split the Revs defenders. On the turn, he took 25-yard dipping shot that bounced in front of Shuttleworth and past him for the goal and a 1-0 D.C. lead in the eighth minute.

Revs had their first solid chance of the night in the 36th minute. Imbongo got around D.C. defender Dejan Jakovic and broke deep into the box, where he fed Kelyn Rowe unmarked 10 yards out of goal. The midfielder tried to re-direct the ball past Joe Willis, but the goalkeeper made a diving save to prevent a sure equalizer.

The Revs had a 54.4 to 45.6 percent lead in possession at the break, but United led in shots (9-4). Both teams placed two shots on goal.

As the second half opened "" with the Revs making one change (Caldwell on in the defensive midfield spot for Simms) "" the Revs continued to press and had a legitimate shout for a penalty in the 51st minute. Nguyen ran into space, picked up an Imbongo square pass and raced toward Willis. Willis appeared to tackle Nguyen without making an attempt on the ball, but referee David Gantar signaled for a goal kick as Nguyen crashed out of bounds.

However the Revs didn't take long to strike and level after that. Jose Goncalves sent a ball out wide to Tierney hugging the touchline, where he whipped an out-swinging cross into the penalty area. As Nguyen's near-post run pulled Willis off his line, Imbongo charged in on the back post and re-directed the cross into an open goal to make the score 1-1.

New England scored the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute and then held on for the win. Imbongo worked across the top of the penalty area and found Sene out wide near the corner of the box. The Frenchman took a couple of steps toward goal and unleashed a curling left-footed shot that beat Willis, but the shot kicked off the left corner of the crossbar. ***undez was the only player who followed up on either team and easily headed in the rebound past a prone Willis.

Neither team threatened for the next 19 minutes before Silva and Lionard Pajoy "" who came on in the 79th minute "" connected in the 82nd minute. Pajoy broke through the backline and had a one-on-one opportunity against Shuttleworth, but the goalkeeper made a kick-save to preserve the Revs' lead late.

Former Revs midfielder Sainey Nyassi had United's last chance to earn a draw in the 86th minute, but his shot off a one-touch dribble was wide left of goal.

The Revs appeared to close the game with a final 3-1 score line when New England cleared a last-ditch D.C. corner kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Saer Sene picked up the ball at midfield, and with Willis up as n extra body in the box for the corner kick, dribbled close to goal and shot. However Gantar had whistled the game closed when he was at midfield and the final score line read 2-1.

The Revolution returns to action on Sunday, August 4, when they travel host Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on TV by Comcast SportsNet and on the radio by 98.5 The Sports Hub.

New England Revolution set to sign Charlie Davies
on loan until end of season?

The New England Revolution might be about to lose one promising US national team prospect in Juan Agudelo, but they could be set to add another American forward with significantly more career experience for a late season playoff push in Charlie Davies.

The Revolution have reportedly already signed Davies on a loan agreement through the end of the season with an option to buy permanently and could announce the deal on Friday. Davies to New England was first reported by SoccerByIves.net.

Davies' only other prior stint in Major League Soccer came during a season-long loan deal with D.C. United in 2011 which saw the now-27-year-old score 11 goals in 26 appearances for the Black-and-Red. Since that time, Davies was released by French club Sochaux and signed for Randers in Denmark, where he has hasn't scored in 23 appearances.

Mark Hughes confirms Stoke City in talks with Juan Agudelo
    for January signing

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes confirmed on Thursday what blew up as Major League Soccer's hottest outgoing transfer story earlier in the week: New England Revolution forward Juan Agudelo is very much a target for the English Premier League club.

Hughes went one step further, telling BBC Radio Stoke that the club and player were already in talks over a potential January signing. Agudelo's Revs contract is up at the end of the current MLS season and the 20-year-old has already flirted with a European move other times during his young career.

Revolution Takes Little in the Way of Positives from Loss

The New England Revolution emphasized getting off to a strong start in Saturday night's visit to Sporting Kansas City, particularly after conceding early goals in each of the past two matches.

Although the Revs limited Sporting KC to just one shot on target in the first half - incidentally, Kei Kamara's 27th-minute goal - Revolution head coach Jay Heaps still wasn't happy with how his side started the game in what eventually turned into a 3-0 loss at Sporting Park.

Heaps was particularly frustrated with what he considered needless giveaways as the Revs kept just 36 percent of the possession and registered 74 percent passing accuracy through the first 45 minutes.

"We didn't start well," he said. "It's disappointing. They had three shots on goal and all three went in. That's a tough stat to look at because we pride ourselves on closing people down and trying to defend. Tonight, I thought we defended - at times - okay, but the problem is when you give the ball away aimlessly against a team like that, you play into their hands, and we did."

Kamara's second goal shortly after the halftime break and a pair of red cards to Dimitry Imbongo (65th minute) and Andy Dorman (86th minute) effectively killed off the Revolution's comeback hopes, but the visitors actually had a golden chance to pull level just before halftime when Imbongo's breakaway opportunity was denied by Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

"That's the key on the road; try to defend hard and then take your chances when you create them," said Chris Tierney, who started at left midfield with Kevin Alston - making his first start since his chronic myelogenous leukemia diagnosis - at left back. "We created a really good one in the first half and unfortunately it didn't go in for us. But we kept playing and had a decent chance to start the second half, couldn't score that one either. Then the second goal killed us off. Red cards killed us off. Third goal obviously killed us off."

After suffering back-to-back losses for just the second time this season, the Revs now head back to the drawing board ahead of a critical two-game home-stand against the Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union.

"Sometimes I say we can take some things from the game. I think you can't really take anything from this game," said Andrew Farrell. "We've got to find a way to get results. It's not good enough right now."

    Revolution gets past Crew

On the same night he was christened the Revs' 2013 most valuable player - the team's youngest-ever MVP - teenager Diego ***undez scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lift the New England Revolution to a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

The win lifted the Revs into a playoff position - fifth place in the Eastern Conference - with one East game to be played on Sunday that could affect the team's placement, setting up the wildest final week in MLS history next weekend.

New England (13-11-9, 48 pts.) enters the final week of the MLS schedule riding a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2), while Columbus (12-16-5, 41 pts.) was eliminated from playoff contention after needing a win tonight to stay alive.

The Revolution sits in fifth place in the East by virtue of tiebreakers over Houston (48 pts.), while the Dynamo hosts New York on Sunday afternoon. If the Red Bulls defeat Houston, the Revs will have their playoff fate in their own hands next weekend when the team ends the season at Columbus next Sunday afternoon.

In front of 26,458 fans - the largest Revs crowd since Aug. 8, 2009 - the Revs put on a spectacular goal-scoring show. After taking a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute and a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute, the Revs saw Columbus twice come back to equalize, setting up ***undez's late-game heroics.

The Revs took a 1-0 lead into halftime behind A.J. Soares' first goal of the season. After Andy Dorman drew a free kick near the corner of the penalty area in the 32nd minute, Kelyn Rowe served in an in-swinging ball that Soares rose to meet and flick in past Crew keeper Matt Lampson.

Columbus opened the second half pressuring the Revs, but ***undez nearly put New Enland up 2-1 in the 58th minute, connecting with Jerry Bengtson's cross in the front of goal, but his flicked-on header flashed wide of Lampson's goal.

One minute later, the Crew's efforts succeeded. Halftime substitute Aaron Schoenfeld fed Columbus' leading scorer, Dominic Oduro, on the right edge of the box, and he blasted a shot over Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis, tucking the ball just under the crossbar to equalize at 1-1.

The Revs got the opportunity to push ahead in the 68th minute when Crew defender Tony Tchani undercut Dorman as he chased after a deflected ball in the penalty area. Referee Mark Geiger pointed to the penalty spot, where Chris Tierney stepped up and converted to push the Revs ahead, 2-1, in the 69th minute.

That lead was short-lived, as Schoenfeld and Oduro combined again in the 71st minute, knotting the game at 2-2. After the Revs struggled to clear the ball, Oduro fed Schoenfeld near the edge of the box and his shot beat Reis through the upper left corner of the goal.

***undez then made his effort count in the 76th minute, connecting with Dorman. After Dimitry Imbongo played Dorman wide to the left, the Welshman sent in a cross that flashed behind Juan Agudelo on the near post. ***undez, however, was streaming in unmarked on the far post and redirected the cross in past Lampson for the 3-2 lead that would hold.

In a pregame ceremony, ***undez was awarded the team's 2013 MVP award, which was determined by fan voting. Captain Jose Goncalves was named the team's 2013 Best Defender (determined by media vote), while Reis was named the team's Humanitarian of the year for the third straight season.

The Revolution returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 27, when the team plays its 2013 regular-season finale against Columbus at Crew Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on TV by Comcast SportsNet and on the radio by 98.5 The Sports Hub HD2.

    New England Revolution's Kevin Alston
wins 2013 Comeback Player of the Year award

NEW YORK – Kevin Alston's abrupt departure from Major League Soccer in early April stunned his teammates, fans and players around the league, but the real surprise came with the speed he returned to the game.

Alston was named the MLS Comeback Player of the Year in a landslide vote on Monday, fitting punctuation after the 25-year-old New England Revolution defender returned to the field less than four months after he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a rare but treatable form of leukemia.

The award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. Alston carried the vote among both club representatives and media members, and finished well ahead of the Philadelphia Union’s Conor Casey and Seattle Sounders’ Lamar Neagle in the final tally.

New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis retires after 16 seasons in Major League Soccer
    [IMG]

Another one of the league's old guard is calling time on his career, as New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis retired Wednesday as the longest-tenured player in club history.

In a career spent on both coasts, first with the LA Galaxy and later with New England, Reis cemented himself as one of the best netminders in league history, finishing near the top of just about every goalkeeping category. He is fourth in games played in goal (282), games started in goal (288) and minutes played in goal (25,936), fifth in wins (110) and saves (1,114) and sixth in shutouts (75).

After returning from injury to help lead the Revs to the playoffs this season, Reis suffered a torn left quadriceps in the final match of the season, a 3-1 loss to eventual MLS Cup champion Sporting KC in the Eastern Conference semifinals. He finished his career with a 1.32 goals against average, 75 shutouts and 110 victories.

New England Revolution get GK Brad Knighton from Vancouver Whitecaps for conditional pick
    [IMG]

The New England Revolution have acquired goalkeeper Brad Knighton from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, the two clubs announced Wednesday.

To facilitate the deal back to the club with whom he started his pro career, Knighton opted out of the 2013 Re-Entry Process, for which he had been eligible.

“We’re very pleased to be able to bring Brad back to the Revolution,” New England general manager Michael Burns said in a statement. “We rate Brad highly and we did not expect him to be available to us tomorrow with the 12th pick of the Re-Entry Draft’s first round. We’re looking forward to him coming back to New England.”

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

    Tuesday, February 18, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The New England Revolution (Major League Soccer) and the Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) have renewed their partnership that makes the Rhinos the official USL PRO affiliate of the Revolution.

This is the second year of the teams’ affiliation and is one of the founding partnerships of the MLS and USL PRO relationship that launched in 2013 to help further the development of professional soccer in the U.S. and Canada.

Making the leap: The Revs got seasons ranging from "very good" to "phenomenal" from a half-dozen youngsters, including two rookies and the highest-scoring teenager in league history. Can they keep that going and build from being the year's surprise package to a legitimate contender?

    Revolution blanks Dynamo

Kevin Alson and Jerry Bengtson scored goals in the second half as the New England Revolution defeated the Houston Dynamo, 2-0, on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
The Dynamo (2-3-0; 6 points) continue a three-game road swing against the Philadelphia Union (1-1-4; 7 points) next Saturday before returning to BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday, April 29 to host the Portland Timbers.

The Dynamo have lost three consecutive league games for the first time since a four-game losing streak from Aug. 28 - Sept. 22, 2010.

The game remained scoreless until the Revolution broke through in the 68th minute. Alston began the sequence with a short pass to Daigo Kobayashi and collected a loose ball after the Dynamo failed to clear. The left back finished his chance from 15 yards for his first career MLS goal and a 1-0 lead.

New England sealed the win in second-half stoppage time. Defender A.J. Soares lofted a long ball over the Houston back line that was collected by Bengtson, who dribbled around goalkeeper Tally Hall and finished from 12 yards for a 2-0 advantage.

Houston created limited scoring opportunities on the night, including a free kick from Boniek Garcia in the 22nd minute that was headed over the goal by rookie AJ Cochrane, who made his first MLS start after making his professional debut last week.

Six minutes later, Giles Barnes floated a dangerous pass toward Garcia near the penalty spot. Alston's headed clearance floated just past the post for a near own goal.

Prior to Alston's goal, Hall kept the Dynamo in the game with several important saves, including a quick dive to his right to parry away Diego ***undez' shot from 20 yards.

Later in the first half, Hall reached up and back to push Lee Nguyen's effort from 25 yards over crossbar.

The Dynamo were shut out for the first time in the 2014 season. Houston is now 1-1 in the season series with New England after a 4-0 win on opening night.

The defeat snapped Houston's four-game unbeaten streak at New England.

The Dynamo played without captain Brad Davis (ankle sprain) and defender David Horst (suspension).

Bunbury's first Revs goal downs former club in stoppage time

When Teal Bunbury wheeled away to celebrate his stoppage-time winner on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, he wasn't even sure which part of his body had gotten the final touch.
Truth be told, he didn't really care.

Bunbury's only concern was that his goal had handed the New England Revolution a precious late breakthrough in an eventual 2-0 win over defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City. That the goal arrived against his former club - Bunbury spent the first four years of his career in Kansas City before a preseason trade brought him to Foxborough - was simply icing on the cake.

"Definitely a lot of emotions, but most importantly, I'm just excited that we were able to get a win," Bunbury said. "Our performance from the first minute to the last minute, I thought was world class. Everybody was fighting, everybody was putting pressure on them and it feels good to beat the former champs.

"It's great - my old club and all that - but to be honest with you, the performance of the whole squad was unbelievable."

For what it's worth, replays showed it was Bunbury's thigh which directed Diego ***undez's right-wing cross into the back of the net. Just a few minutes later, Lee Nguyen sealed the result with a calm finish from the penalty spot after Oriol Rosell had handled a close-range effort from ***undez.

Bunbury's goal wasn't only a stoppage-time winner against his former club, but also his first in a Revolution jersey. The hard-working striker toiled through his first seven games in New England without a goal to show for his efforts, but a weight was lifted off his shoulders with Saturday night's late strike.

"For me, a goal's a goal. I really couldn't be happier for that," Bunbury said. "But it's really the work of my teammates that kept my spirits up through these games not scoring yet. So this definitely feels good."

It would be easy to surmise that Bunbury was fueled by a bit of extra motivation against his former club - he matched a season-high with three shots and was buzzing throughout an energetic first half - but he claims that wasn't the case. Instead, he was fueled by a simple desire to score goals and win games.

"I feel like every game I want to score. That's my job," Bunbury said. "So I wouldn't say it was a little more eagerness (tonight), but I definitely had some chances and probably should've done better with those.

"But we get a win and a big three points for us. We still haven't lost at home, still haven't conceded a goal at home. It's great."
