I think you are reading the article a little different than I am. I think the author is saying that as a Black person, bigotry is so intrinsic to their life daily that one can not truly be friends with a white person unless that white person actively stands and fights side by side for the elimination of bigotry and racism. And although I think the author wrong in discounting a huge lot of people because they just aren't political or people who take active roles in affecting societal change, I do understand the perspective. If you look around and hear voice after voice espousing views you equate with racism then that becomes the default unless the person actively demonstrates otherwise.
