Thanks. Not self installed - both the boss and myself have separate deadlines on big projects - so we have a contractor - which because of supply chain issues is not actually the cause of the delays... our job was mostly design and product purchase + a little bit of project management - because there are specialty contractors on top of the general contractor job. (I probably would have only be good only at the demo and maybe fixture installation and the boss at telling me what I did wrong - so better get professionals to do that job). The tile at the bottom was a match to the gray tiles on the wall, it is something Italian iirc, if you really care - I can try to figure it out (most of this stuff was ordered 2 or 3 months ago - and now is around the time most of the stuff started to arrive - which is why it is being done now). I think you are right to be paranoid about water issues and mold - had a specialist come and tar the entire shower - and the tiles are on top of that - to be sure there are no leaks... I will make sure the shower enclosure will be water tight as well. Our old house had 2 slab leaks in the 8 years we have lived here (well, one was done by the previous owner after inspection, the 2nd we had to deal with) - and we recently had another bathroom leak that required water remediation - old houses are a pain - by the time we are ready to move out since the kids left the house, it is going to be very nice...
I think I have someone!!!! Realized contractors are not going to read 36 page inspector report emailed to them so I prepared a summary. They can see full report with photos. Anyway talked to a guy who looked at summary and said call him when escrow complete, hopefully end of this week, and we can do walk through. Have another guy for roof lined up. None through Angi or Yelp, I might add.
You are in for some fun... Since we are waiting for materials for the main bathroom - we might take advantage of the contractors and do our guest bathroom at the same time - with cheap, built in stuff that you can just get at the home depot. These guys are idle otherwise - and it would be more efficient to do that. This means that for a short while, we might just have to live with the kid's bathroom. Fun.
I've got black mold in the grout between my shower tiles. How the hell do you get rid of it. Tried brushing with an old tooth brush and vinegar and baking powder but just doesn't go away. Do you have to leave the vinegar and baking powder on for a day or two before rinsing it off?
1/2 bleach and 1/2 water in a spray bottle and let stand for 30 minutes. Then use borax/bpowder/vinegar. You may need to apply a few times.
My electrical work estimate came in at $7,500. Install five 20 A circuits, install one T2 hybrid car 2 phase circuit and move the service panel from the kitchen pantry to the garage. Sound about right.
If you don't have a cavity in your rear end, you are in deep doo-doo. Damn. Supposed to do final walkthrough this afternoon. Realtor just called to tell me the hauler who was supposed to remove previous owner's crap so it could be cleaned came down with Covid. They are trying to find someone to do it tomorrow.
Meanwhile, can't move to new house with faded sheets and ragged towels. So ordered new in strong colors. A gray cat looks pretty against bold color.
Learned about shower enclosure / door glass - apparently, even the clear glass option has iron in it - so when you look at the edges they appear green. We went for low-iron (Starphire) Tempered Glass instead. Almost no green tint when you look at the edges. We also went with glass to glass hinges - which required one of the glass sheets to go all the way to the ceiling so it will not wobble. Starphire on top, clear glass on bottom. I did not even know that this was a thing.
My glass door hinges are strong as hell. I use the outside door handle for support when I'm getting out of the shower and have to dry my feet.
Glass enclosure installed, as did the vanity. Waiting for window, counter-tops and mostly fixture installation after that.
.. In the meantime, I used some more scrap materials including some of the bamboo decking materials left over for a quick and dirty bench on the downhill "wild" part of our property.
Not really a remodel, but just dealt with my first frozen pipe in our house in 20+ years in central Oregon. The other night it was in the negatives and somewhere between the kitchen sink and the spigot for the fridge water it froze. Could not reach all of it, but was able to get it warmer around the pipe and with a open faucet when the blockage broke free I was able to avoid any pipes bursting. I know lot's of people in Central Oregon didn't get as luck after Tuesday night. The plumbers are running ragged right now.
