Doing a shorebird survey at St. Joseph State Park. I followed tracks into the dunes and found a Snowy Plover nest. I was keeping shade on it here while the adults were off of the nest.
This is St. George State Park. I spend my days now walking up and down the beach monitoring shorebirds and collecting data to help their survival.
Once a week I get to conduct surveys of an island right outside of town. They give me a jet ski and all day to do my thing. I never thought I would get paid to jet ski and look at birds.
I was helping out the herpetologists and thought I would see what I could find in the swamp at St. Andrews.
After monitoring an adult pair of Snowy Plovers for months, we found their nest, waited for the chicks to hatch, found them on their hatch day and then later applied color bands to their legs for future identification. This is why we do it.
We use scopes to help zoom in and identify shorebirds during our surveys and I have been playing around with taking photos manually through the scope's lens. This is just an example of that. I'm working on a series of these. This is a Great Blue Heron feeding in an ephemeral pond between the gulf shore and a lagoon at St. Joseph.
I walked to the bay shore behind my house yesterday and saw these people fishing for bull sharks while their families were swimming right in front of them. Florida.
