Markkanen helps No. 8 Arizona hold off Santa Clara, 69-61

With his roster down to eight healthy scholarship players, Arizona coach Sean Miller knew one of his freshmen would have to step up during the Continental Las Vegas Invitational.

On Thursday night against Santa Clara, two of them did.

Lauri Markkanen had 16 points and nine rebounds, Kobi Simmons scored 14 and No. 8 Arizona advanced to the championship game with a 69-61 victory.

No. 14 UCLA holds off Nebraska 81-71

UCLA senior guard Bryce Alford wants the ball in his hands during critical moments at the end of games. He had it, and he delivered, scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half to pace the No. 14 Bruins to a 82-71 victory over Nebraska in the Wooden Legacy semifinals Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

Ennis scores 18 as No. 23 Oregon rallies past Boise St 68-63

Growing pains are nothing new for the oldest veteran on Oregon's roster, who may have finally found his comfort zone.

After missing most of the Ducks' run to the Elite Eight last season because of a foot injury, sixth-year senior Dylan Ennis, a graduate transfer from Villanova, is still getting acclimated to his teammates.

Ennis scored 18 points and No. 23 Oregon rallied for a 68-63 victory over Boise State on Monday night.

No. 11 UCLA stays unbeaten with 98-56 win over UC Riverside

After beating up on mostly lesser competition, things are about to get serious for No. 11 UCLA.

The Bruins play at No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday before facing Michigan and Ohio State, a challenging start to December after they cruised past UC Riverside 98-56 to close out the first month of the season undefeated.

Brooks, Sorkin lead No. 23 Oregon past Western Oregon 93-54

Oregon's Dana Altman did a fine imitation of a hockey coach when he least expected it.

Ahead early in what he considered a "developmental game," Altman went with five-man shift changes to spread the minutes among his Ducks, and it worked with 10 players getting between 18 and 22.

Preseason All-America Dillon Brooks scored 21 points and Roman Sorkin had a career-high 15 as No. 23 Oregon rolled to a 93-54 victory over Western Oregon on Wednesday night.

No. 16 Arizona rolls over Texas Southern 85-63

Lauri Markkanen dropped a bounce pass to Dusan Ristic, setting up his fellow big man for an easy basket to open the game. The 7-footer from Finland scored his first points on a dunk , then stepped out and swished a 3-pointer.

In a season of fabulous freshmen, Markkanen is already making a name for himself.

Markkanen hit five 3-pointers while scoring 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists, helping No. 16 Arizona bounce back from its first loss of the season with an 85-63 rout of Texas Southern on Wednesday night.

No. 11 UCLA (9-0) ends 42-game home winning streak for No. 1 Kentucky

Only briefly did UCLA appear vulnerable against top-ranked Kentucky. The Wildcats have been one of the hardest teams to beat at home, but they didn't have an answer for UCLA.

The 11th-ranked Bruins made timely baskets and rebounds, a consistent combination that grabbed momentum and eventually the game from the Wildcats.

Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points, and UCLA beat Kentucky 97-92 on Saturday. The Bruins' victory marked their second upset of the top-ranked Wildcats in as many years. TJ Leaf added 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Bruins shot 53 percent from the field.

Dorsey leads No. 23 Oregon to 128-59 rout of Savannah State

No. 23 Oregon is piling up points at a prolific pace.

Tyler Dorsey scored a career-high 29 points, Dillon Brooks had 22 and the Ducks set a school scoring record in a 128-59 victory over Savannah State on Saturday night.

Coming off a 93-54 win against Western Oregon on Wednesday night, the Ducks (7-2) eclipsed their previous high of 121 points against Portland in 1970 and had seven players score in double figures for the first time in nine seasons. It was their fifth consecutive win and 30th straight at home, adding to another school record.

White leads Colorado to 68-66 win over No. 13 Xavier

Colorado coach Tad Boyle made an innocent comment after a sluggish performance at the start the season: Play like that again and Xavier would beat the Buffaloes by 20.

His players received the message. They made sure it didn't go down like that.

Derrick White scored 23 points and had a crucial block with 13 seconds remaining to help Colorado hold off No. 13 Xavier 68-66 on Wednesday night.

Freshmen Leaf and Ball help No. 2 UCLA beat Michigan 102-84

UCLA followed up its upset victory at then-No. 1 Kentucky in a big way.

The second-ranked Bruins clamped down on defense in the second half to beat Michigan 102-84 on Saturday night in front of 13,571, the first sellout at Pauley Pavilion in nearly four years.

Alkins leads No. 20 Arizona past Missouri, 79-60

It's an old cliché; winning on the road in college basketball is no easy task.

As a visiting opponent, having only seven players on scholarship doesn't make it any easier.

It didn't seem to faze No. 20 Arizona, which looked polished and poised as it defeated Missouri for the third consecutive season, cruising to a 79-60 victory Saturday in its first true road game of the season.

No. 24 Oregon holds off Alabama 63-56

For the first third of Oregon's season, coach Dana Altman has waited for a "sense of urgency" for an entire game.

Then his Ducks found it just in time, with a little luck on their side.

Tyler Dorsey scored 19 points and Dylan Ennis hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to help No. 24 Oregon beat Alabama 63-56 on Sunday night.

Ristic, No. 19 Arizona hold off Texas A&M 67-63

Playing with a seven-man rotation, Arizona coach Sean Miller admitted his team wore down late against Texas A&M.

The Wildcats had just enough left to fight off the Aggies on Saturday.

Dusan Ristic tied a season-high with 18 points as No. 19 Arizona had to hold off a furious rally by Texas A&M for its fourth straight victory, 67-63.

No. 2 UCLA completes perfect preseason

UCLA knows all its games won't be lopsided. But as long as the wins keep coming, that's what matters most.

The second-ranked Bruins had a tougher time than they might have expected with Western Michigan, but found a way to remain unbeaten Wednesday night with an 82-68 victory at Pauley Pavilion.

USC remains unbeaten thanks to McLaughlin's driving layup

Southern California coach Andy Enfield hopes this isn't the only time his team wins a tournament championship in Las Vegas this season.

The undefeated Trojans took their last non-conference test Friday night and it turned out to be an extremely difficult one against a stubborn Wyoming team.

With 30 seconds left in overtime, USC had the ball in a tie game.

Jordan McLaughlin dribbled down the clock, drove through traffic in the lane and made a left-handed layup with 4.5 seconds left that gave No. 23 USC a 94-92 win in the title game of the Las Vegas Classic at the Orleans Arena.
