No. 13 Washington holds off Tulane 66-57

Lorenzo Romar could tell early when the turnovers began piling up and the mistakes continued that No. 13 Washington was mentally exhausted.

The Huskies still found a way -- mostly because of their defense -- to remain undefeated.

Shawn Kemp Jr. scored 16 points, Nigel Williams-Goss added 14 and Washington pulled away in the second half for a 66-57 win over Tulane on Monday night.

Chapman helps No. 14 Utah cruise past South Dakota St 80-66

Coaches don't often beg freshmen to shoot more.

But Utah first-year player Brekkott Chapman can't seem to fire up enough shots for Coach Larry Krystkowiak.

"Brekkott was really big. He made some shots and he probably passes up some shots," Krystkowiak said. "You don't often have to convince a young man to shoot more but he has a nice stroke."

Chapman scored a career-best 22 points to help No. 14 Utah cruise past South Dakota State 80-66 on Tuesday night.

Anthony Brown leads Stanford upset of No. 9 Texas in OT

Anthony Brown knew he could play a lot better after Stanford lost at BYU last week. He did just that to help the Cardinal pull off the upset of No. 9 Texas.

"I wanted to be aggressive," Brown said. "I wanted to have no regrets."

The Cardinal forward scored a season-best 25 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, helping Stanford defeat the Longhorns 74-71 on Tuesday night.

Jordan Mathews' 31 points (5 3s) lead Cal past No. 21 Washington

After one of Washington's best starts ever and an impressive unbeaten five weeks, the Huskies suddenly have some serious concerns at the start of the Pac-12 season.

    They're on a two-game losing streak.

Jordan Mathews scored 31 points and knocked down three of his career-high five 3-pointers in the second half, leading California to an 81-75 upset of No. 21 Washington on Friday night in the Pac-12 opener for both schools.

Jordan Loveridge drives No. 10 Utah's blowout of Trojans

Shortly after minor knee surgery, Jordan Loveridge couldn't do much other than shoot baskets.

"When I was out, that's one thing I could do. I started in close, but as my rehab progressed, I moved farther out. Staying in the gym -- not just relaxing or moping -- paid off," the junior forward said.

Loveridge scored 14 points to lead No. 10 Utah over USC 79-55 on Friday night in both teams' Pac-12 opener.

Smothering defense has become Utah's trademark. The rest of the Pac-12 is quickly learning what that means.

UCLA became the latest team to see its offense short-circuit against the No. 10 Utes. Utah routed the Bruins 71-39 on Sunday.

Arizona had 11 days off following its first loss of the season and spent the time working on its weaknesses, like free-throw shooting and offensive rebounding.

But coach Sean Miller is a defensive-minded coach, so of course the Wildcats worked on that end of the floor quite a bit.

It certainly showed at the start of the Pac-12 season.

Using the extended break to its advantage, No. 8 Arizona harassed rival Arizona State into a rash of mistakes and turnovers in a 73-49 rout Sunday night.

Chasson Randle saw 7-foot Robert Upshaw in his path and focused his eyes on the basket and taking it right into the big man's body.

Randle's driving layin with 2.2 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime, Rosco Allen hit a key 3-pointer in OT after missing all six of his free throws during regulation, and Stanford spoiled No. 21 Washington's Bay Area trip with a 68-60 victory Sunday night.

With all the offensive weapons that No. 7 Arizona possesses, point guard T.J. McConnell figured it was only a matter of time before he would be called on to score.

McConnell took advantage of Oregon's defensive tactics Thursday night for a season-high 21 points, and all five Wildcats scored in double figures during an 80-62 victory over the Ducks.

After losing several key members from last year's squad, holding an open tryout this fall and dropping an exhibition game to Division II Western Oregon, expectations for Oregon State this season were low.

That all changed Sunday night, when Langston Morris-Walker made a go-ahead lay-in with 26 seconds left, lifting Oregon State over No. 7 Arizona 58-56 on Sunday night for its first win over a top-10 team since 2000.

Bob Boyd, the Southern California basketball coach who led the Trojans to four postseason appearances in the 1960s and `70s, died Wednesday. He was 84.

The school said Boyd died of natural causes at his home in Palm Desert. He had planned to attend the UCLA-USC game at Galen Center in the evening with his son.

Boyd had a 216-131 record in 13 seasons from 1967-79, including reaching the 1979 NCAA tournament, 1973 NIT and 1974 and '75 Commissioner's Conference tournaments. His 1971 team went 24-2 and was ranked nationally.

When Arizona rebounds, it can be almost unstoppable. Fail to focus on the glass and the Wildcats are beatable.

Their effort back in the right spot, the Wildcats rebounded from a disappointing loss with an overpowering win.

Brandon Ashley grabbed 11 boards, Stanley Johnson snared eight while scoring 22 points and the 10th-ranked Wildcats took advantage of short-handed Colorado inside for a 68-54 victory over on Thursday night.

Almost everyone in college basketball by now knows about Utah's player of the year contender, Delon Wright. They might forget about the "little warrior."

Standing only 5-foot-10, Brandon Taylor is often the shortest player on the court -- but he's the heart of the Utah attack.

"Brandon is an absolute little warrior," Utes coach Larry Krystowiak said. "Pound-for-pound, I think he'd kick the snot out of anybody on the basketball court. He brings it on a daily basis and he plays the right way."

Taylor scored 18 points and handed out seven assists to help No. 12 Utah beat Washington State 86-64 on Wednesday night.

Always feisty, Taylor had an unusually big chip on his shoulder for this game after Utah lost to then-No. 10 Arizona 69-51 last Saturday.

In a physical, tightly officiated matchup for first place in the Pac-12, Arizona had to find a flow in a game that completely lacked one because of all the whistles and interruptions.

It took a big second half from Stanley Johnson and Brandon Ashley and some key minutes by role players off the bench.

Johnson had 19 points and seven rebounds, and No. 7 Arizona handed Stanford its first home loss of the season with an 89-82 victory Thursday night. Ashley added 17 points while playing with foul trouble in the Wildcats' 10th straight win in the rivalry.

Arizona is long past last season's devastating defeat in Berkeley. The Wildcats are on to bigger and better things now, and they're enjoying every step of the way.

Stanley Johnson had 19 points and nine rebounds, Dusan Ristic scored 12 points and No. 7 Arizona avenged last season's loss in Berkeley by crushing California 73-50 on Saturday night.

Utah players always try to find the best shot on every possession. That's why the Utes lead the Pac-12 in shooting and rank second in 3-point field-goal percentage and scoring.

Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high 19 points and Brandon Taylor added 14 to lead Utah to a 77-56 victory over Washington on Sunday.

Arizona's offense flowed, the floor spacing and crisp passing leading to open shots, most of those finding the bottom of the net.

The defense attacked every shot, every dribble, leaving the Pac-12's highest-scoring team foundering.

When the Wildcats play like this, not many teams in the country are going to beat them.

Playing with a tenacity Oregon had no chance of matching, No. 6 Arizona put on an offensive show and was equally effective on the defensive end in a 90-56 rout over the Ducks Wednesday night.

In need of a signature win to bolster a sagging NCAA tournament resume, UCLA looked for leadership from its lone senior starter.

    Norman Powell didn't disappoint.

Powell scored 23 points and the Bruins defeated No. 11 Utah 69-59 on Thursday night for their first victory over a Top 25 opponent this season.
