    Scooby Wright wins Nagurski award

Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright won the Bronko Nagurski award, given to the nation's top college defensive player, on Monday night.

Wright was considered a two-star recruit coming out of high school and said the Wildcats were the only Football Bowl Subdivision school to offer him a scholarship.

The 6-foot-1, 246-pound linebacker used that slight as motivation. He took aim at the rest of the Pac-12, turning in a stellar sophomore season with 89 tackles -- 27 for a loss -- and 14 sacks, helping the Wildcats (No. 10 CFP, No. 12 AP) earn a spot in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl against Boise State.

Wright won the Bronko Nagurski Award on Monday night as the top college defensive player, and was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. He's also in the running for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

    Marcus Mariota wins Heisman Trophy

Marcus Mariota, widely considered the favorite over co-finalists Melvin Gordon and Amari Cooper, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in New York.

College football's top honor punctuates the Oregon junior quarterback's list of 2014 accolades, which include the Walter Camp, Davey O'Brien, Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards. Mariota's banner season included 3,783 passing yards and 38 touchdown passes against two interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback also racked up 669 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Mariota's victory was a landslide. He received 90.9 percent of all available votes, which is the second-largest margin of victory, behind only only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith's 91.6 in 2006.

Vigil brothers help Utah State take down UTEP in New Mexico

After yet another injury, Utah State wound up needing its fifth-string quarterback. Fortunately for the Aggies, they had the Vigil brothers the whole way.

Nick Vigil ran for a touchdown and combined with his brother to make 16 tackles as Utah State shut down UTEP 21-6 Saturday in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

QB Travis Wilson scores 4 times as Utah sinks Colorado St. in Vegas

Right from the start, quarterback Travis Wilson and No. 22 Utah had Colorado State on the run in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl.

Wilson rushed for a season-best 91 yards, scored three touchdowns and passed for another in a 45-10 rout Saturday.

No. 15 Arizona State defeats Duke in Hyundai Sun Bowl

Kalen Ballage was itching to do something, anything, to help his Arizona State teammates beat Duke.

No. 24 USC holds on for wild Holiday Bowl win over Nebraska

It wasn't until Nelson Agholor knocked down a desperation pass by Nebraska's Tommy Armstrong Jr. inside the 10 that USC coach Steve Sarkisian could exhale and celebrate.

After blowing most of an 18-point, third-quarter lead, the No. 24 Trojans beat Nebraska 45-42 in a wild National University Holiday Bowl on Saturday night.

Marcus Mariota, Ducks down error-prone FSU in Rose Bowl rout

    Touchdown. Turnover. Touchdown. Turnover. Touchdown.
And on it went for Oregon.

Marcus Mariota and the Ducks are built for speed, and in a flash they turned the first College Football Playoff semifinal game into a rout.

The Ducks dusted Florida State 59-20 on Thursday, and now it's on to Texas to try to win their first national championship.

Brett Hundley, UCLA start fast, then hold off K-State in Alamo Bowl

Even with a 31-6 halftime lead, UCLA coach Jim Mora knew the Bruins had a lot of work to do to finish off Kansas State in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

"We're playing the 11th-ranked team in the country, and it's not going to be easy," Mora said. "You know they're going to fight back. If they don't fight back, they don't deserve to be No. 11."

The No. 14 Bruins held on, beating the Wildcats 40-35 on Friday night.

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich confirmed that Ducks wide receiver Darren Carrington will not play in Monday night's College Football Playoff National Championship Presented by AT&T against Ohio State.

Multiple outlets have reported that Carrington failed an NCAA-sanctioned drug test, although Helfrich would not disclose any details, saying only that the freshman is ineligible.

No. 22 Wildcats' 42-32 win over UTSA comes with a cost

Arizona struggled defensively, was uneven on offense and had trouble putting away a smaller-conference team at home.

That wasn't even close to the worst news of the night. Losing All-American linebacker Scooby Wright to a knee injury early in the game trumped it all.

Anu Solomon threw four touchdown passes to help No. 22 Arizona beat UTSA 42-32 Thursday night, but the Wildcats suffered a big blow when Wright went out with a left knee injury.

Rosen leads No. 13 UCLA past Virginia 34-16 in stellar debut

Josh Rosen's first run down the Rose Bowl tunnel left him incredibly nervous. He described his first snap as totally surreal.

Nobody ever would have guessed. From his eye-popping first throw to the last TD toss, UCLA's heralded freshman quarterback got his career off to a stellar start.

Rosen passed for 351 yards and three touchdowns, leading the No. 13 Bruins to a 34-16 victory over Virginia on Saturday.

No. 24 Utah beats Utah State 24-14, loses starters to injury

Utah entered the season with a star running back, a staunch defense and a pair of dependable kickers. The need was consistent, efficient play at quarterback.

The No. 24 Utes got exactly that from senior starter Travis Wilson -- for five quarters.

Devontae Booker ran for 120 yards and a touchdown and the Utes beat Utah State 24-14 on Friday night in a victory marred by Wilson's left shoulder injury.

Fabulous as freshmen, Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon and running back Nick Wilson are picking up where they left off last season.

Wilson ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns and Solomon passed for 264 yards and two more scores Saturday to lead the No. 22 Wildcats past Nevada 44-20 and improve to 2-0.

Perkins, Rosen lead No. 13 UCLA to 37-3 rout of UNLV

UCLA coach Jim Mora insisted his Bruins were much more than quarterback Josh Rosen, even though the freshman sensation stole some national headlines in his college debut.

Running back Paul Perkins proved Mora was right.

Perkins ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, Rosen threw for another score and No. 13 UCLA rolled to a 37-3 victory over UNLV on Saturday night.

Tanner Mangum pulls off 2nd straight late TD pass, upsetting Boise State

The Tanner Mangum show continued Saturday with another barely believable, come-from-behind victory for the 21-year-old freshman who returned from a Mormon mission in Chile just three months ago.

He threw a 35-yard touchdown to Mitchell Juergens with 45 seconds left to give BYU its second last-minute victory in as many weeks. The Cougars defeated No. 20 Boise State 35-24 as the Mangum magic continued.

Kessler passes for 410 yards, No. 8 USC blasts Idaho 59-9

Cody Kessler settled in the pocket and calmly surveyed his receivers, eventually choosing JuJu Smith-Schuster as he sprinted down the middle for a beautiful 50-yard touchdown.

The whole thing looked a bit like practice for eighth-ranked Southern California. With no offense to overmatched Idaho, that's how the Trojans treated their final game before their serious competition begins.

Kessler threw for a career-high 410 yards and hit Smith-Schuster with two of his three touchdown passes, leading the Trojans past Idaho 59-9 Saturday night for their second straight blowout win.
