The Rangers are in a tough situation. Do they go all out and try and win now and possibly mess up the chemistry they are beginning to build, or do they sit back, make a couple of smaller moves looking towards the future? Maybe they make a strong run in the postseason, and maybe they don't, but they are still looking better for a future Stanley Cup run. In the playoffs, you need to be more physical, and they aren't that team ... yet.

They don't have to break anything up, since some of these players won't be back anyways, but they can certainly put together a trade or two to add an extra forward or dman using DZ and prospect. Then go from there without giving up much and see where it goes. Next year is when they need to really make a mark in upgrading the team and becoming a legit SC contender for the next 3-4 years.

I am finding it very hard to believe that Dan Girardi and his agents are actually considering resigning for a discount. I'm sure whoever represents him isn't sleeping at night knowing what he is gonna pass up if he decides to NOT test the UFA waters. Dan has overpaid just hit the wrong side of 30 ufa dman written all over him. I would love it if he took a home town discount and stayed here for 5mil TOPS. I would prefer 4.5mil that's probably his worth. Previous free agent periods have proved time and time again that a player like him would get 6mil+ with no problems.

Hopefully this doesn't mean Glen is actually thinking about offering him the 6+ mil that he could potentially earn.

If he wants 6 mill + we have to let him go. If he will take around 5 or low 5's per (5.3 tops but prefer 5.2 or lower) I do it for 4 or 5 years. That is how I view it at least.

I wouldn't do more than a 2 yr deal with him, but I don't think he'd be happy with that. 4y is way too long for someone like that imo. But we'll see. Maybe 3/15 tops.

We know you hate him sc...:). Worst dman ever...LOL. Despite the fact that AV loves him, plays him on the 1st pair, and he plays over 22 mpg. We can easily replace that no doubt...:).

To me a 4 year deal with a low 5's cap hit would be a great deal for us, and a solid deal for Girardi if he wants to stay a Ranger.

I don't hate him, at all, he's been solid since they picked him up, but I just think we're going to see a rapid decline in him over the next year or two with the wear and tear he's taken.

I wouldn't mind keeping him. He is a serviceable warrior. But again, when players like him cross the 30 year old line, their style of play starts to wear on them. They start to get a little slower. Start to block less shots. Start to miss games. I really do feel like whoever he plays for on his next deal is going to regret it unless its for 4.5-5mil a season. Ok chuck I see your point, you don't let him go if its 5 vs 5.3 but still. Why wouldn't his agents be saying, "hey dan I understand you like playing here in NY but theres an extra million a year out there if your willing to move"

All I know is he, like the rest of the team, has been getting better and better recently as he has grown more comfortable with AV's system.

Plus he turns 30 at the very end of April. Which means on a 4 year deal we get him ages 30-33. That is not crazy. Not like he will be 35 or 36 or 37 in year 4. Even on a 5 year deal it ends when he just turns 35. Not bad at all IMO.

Here's the thing mig, I can't get caught up in that. If he takes low 5's awesome he stays here. If he and his agents say "I understand I like playing here in NY but theres an extra million a year out there if your willing to move" then so be it. He will go somewhere else for 6 mill or more per. What can you do.

I can only say what I would do if I was Sather, and that is a 4 or 5 year deal (rather 4) for a max cap hit of low 5's per (would go to 5.3 but rather 5.2 as the max).

That's all I can comment on. Not enough...okay good luck Dan.

Sometimes you take for granted what you have. Look at Prust. We all said 2.5 cap hit per no way we can do that. Fast forward a few years and we have paid way more than that for guys to try and replace him and failed big time. Rupp, Asham, Mashinter, Powe, and others. Huge waste.

Sometimes what you have is worth more than you think.

We agree on the terms and your right we have no control over what actually happens... I just know its an agents job to get the most money for his player as possible and if we give him that I will be very upset.

I see no way we give him 6 mill per. I can see in the 5's...MAYBE even closing in on mid 5's from Sather...but no way can I see Sather going close to 6 mill per for Girardi.

I think he re-signs for 4 years at 5.0 to 5.5 per tops. I think 5.5 is a little too much, maybe 300 K or so per too much, but I can see Sather getting close to that if pushed.

    We'll see...

I know Mcdonagh was an RFA when his contract was negotiated, but it would be wonderful if Dan worked with the team to take a similar amount cap hit wise (4.7) but for just 4 years... we can dream right?

5 y, 5.5 million. I'd do that. It's worth it. He's picked up this system and once again has overcome. I didn't think he could do it at one point. He's done it. He's over-achieved his entire career.

Ugh... I get what your saying dump but that's a long time. I'll eat crow if 34,35 year old girardi is worth that.
