Georgia hires FSU's Pruitt to head defense

Georgia coach Mark Richt moved quickly to name a new defensive coordinator, hiring Jeremy Pruitt from Florida State on Tuesday, only two days after losing Todd Grantham to Louisville.

Richt said he is ''ecstatic'' to add Pruitt to the Georgia staff. Pruitt has coached on three straight national championship teams at Alabama and Florida State.

Under Pruitt, undefeated Florida State led the nation in scoring defense, allowing 12.1 points per game, and ranked third in total defense while winning the national championship.

    Luke Del Rio leaving Alabama

The list of candidates to replace AJ McCarron as Alabama quarterback became shorter after freshman Luke Del Rio took to Twitter to announce his intention to leave the program.

Luke's father, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, has a close relationship with Oregon State coach Mike Riley. The Beavers recruited Luke out of high school and offered him a scholarship, but he ultimately chose to walk on at Alabama instead.

Alabama's change at offensive coordinator, bringing in former USC coach Lane Kiffin after the departure of Doug Nussmeier, coupled with four-star quarterback David Cornwell enrolling early, could have played a role in Del Rio's decision to transfer.

    Thomas Holley commits to Gators

Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp has flipped an ESPN 300 commitment for the third time in the past week.

The No. 51 prospect in the country, defensive tackle Thomas Holley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lincoln), switched his commitment Wednesday from Penn State to Florida.

Last week, five-star cornerback Jalen Tabor (Washington, D.C./Friendship Academy) and four-star running back Brandon Powell (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) flipped their commitments from Arizona and Miami, respectively, to the Gators.

    Brian Schottenheimer to interview

St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is interviewing Wednesday for the Vanderbilt head-coaching job, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schottenheimer, son of NFL coaching icon Marty Schottenheimer, was the OC with the New York Jets from 2006 to 2011 before joining the Rams in 2012.

He's drawn mixed reviews as he's helped the Rams improve in scoring in each of his two seasons. The Rams finished 30th in total yards and 22nd in scoring in 2013 despite playing more than half the season without starting quarterback Sam Bradford.

Georgia hires Jeremy Pruitt as DC

Georgia has hired Florida State's Jeremy Pruitt to be its defensive coordinator, the Bulldogs announced Tuesday.

Pruitt, who helped coach the Seminoles to the BCS national title in his first season as defensive coordinator at the school, replaces former Georgia DC Todd Grantham, who resigned Sunday to accept the same position at Louisville.

Steve Spurrier to make $4 million

South Carolina's Steve Spurrier will be among the nation's 10 highest-paid coaches after university trustees approved a pay raise to $4 million per year Thursday.

In addition, the contract for the 68-year-old Spurrier was extended by one year through the 2018 season.

"We appreciate the attitude of the board of trustees in keeping our salaries competitive with the rest of the SEC," Spurrier said in a statement. "We all hope to coach here many more years, and we still have some goals that have not been accomplished yet."

Derek Mason: Vandy 'hired a winner'

Derek Mason wants to make a few things clear: He has plenty of experience recruiting in the South, hopes to finish his career at Vanderbilt and has very high goals for the Commodores -- such as playing for the Southeastern Conference championship.

Vanderbilt introduced its new football coach Saturday, a week after starting a search to replace James Franklin, who left for Penn State.

"This job means everything to me," Mason said before a packed room. "This is where I want to be, this is where I plan on spending the rest of my career. We will win. Make sure of that. Make no doubts about that. I understand what college football's about. It's about winning, and you hired a winner for sure."

    Alabama's Tony Brown arrested

Alabama freshman defensive back Tony Brown was arrested Saturday night and charged with failure to obey and resisting arrest.

Brown, who has been released on bond, was arrested after police responded to a "loud party and underage drinking complaint" at an apartment complex at 12:53 a.m. on Sunday, according to a statement released from Tuscaloosa Police Department to The Tuscaloosa News.

A man, Chavis Taylor, was arrested, and as officers walked Taylor to a patrol unit a large crowd gathered around the officers, the statement said.

QB Town to USC; Coker joins Bama

While USC continues to put the finishing touches on their 2014 recruiting class with signing day less than two weeks away, the Trojans began to build a foundation for 2015 on Saturday night.

New coach Steve Sarkisian landed a verbal commitment from quarterback Ricky Town (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure), the No. 2-rated pocket passer -- and No. 22 overall prospect -- in the ESPN Junior 300, who decommited from Alabama earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, former Florida State quarterback Jacob Coker was in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday and signed with the Crimson Tide on Sunday, coach Nick Saban announced.

    Marlon Humphrey to Alabama

Rather than deny his home-state ties or his father's legacy, five-star cornerback Marlon Humphrey chose to stay close to home and committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday morning.

Humphrey, the No. 15 overall prospect -- and fifth-ranked CB -- in the ESPN 300 rankings out of Hoover (Ala.) High School, chose Alabama over Florida State and a slew of other offers.

He had long kept his recruitment close to the vest, leading many to wonder whether he'd make the most obvious choice as his father, Bobby, was an All-American running back for the Tide in the late 1980s.

Alabama looks to wrap up top class

Alabama may have missed out on a third consecutive national championship, but the Crimson Tide entered national signing day with the nation's top class.

If they are able to hold off challenges from Florida State, Texas A&M and LSU, the Tide will finish with the No. 1 class in RecruitingNation's rankings for the third straight year.

"The biggest challenge for all these guys is how do they develop as a college football player," Alabama coach Nick Saban told ESPN on Wednesday morning. "I think that's a challenge for us and for them, and I think that's something our staff has done a really good job of in the past.

"Most of these guys have turned out to be really good players for us, and they've been able to develop careers at the next level, which is really kind of what it's all about."

Bama honors aid offer to Elisha Shaw

Alabama coach Nick Saban again put together the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, a group that includes five five-star athletes and a whopping 19 members of the ESPN 300. But the Crimson Tide landed one more recruit Wednesday than the 27 they counted as official signees: Elisha Shaw, a former standout prospect who saw his playing career end before the start of his senior season in high school.

On signing day, Shaw sat among 15 of his classmates as they signed their national letters of intent. Shaw, however, did not do the same. He "signed" with Alabama without actually putting pen to paper.

It's part of a commitment Saban made ensuring that Shaw would receive a scholarship at Alabama under a medical exemption.

    Cody Riggs intends to transfer

Cody Riggs, who started 12 games at safety for Florida last fall, intends to graduate this spring and then transfer, Gators coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday.

"Cody Riggs and his parents came to me and he's going to finish up in May and transfer to another school to finish his last year of eligibility," Muschamp said. "[He] wanted a fresh start. I appreciate his contributions to Florida."

Riggs, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound fourth-year junior, was fourth on the team with 51 tackles in 2013. He played cornerback his first three years at Florida and could be looking to return to his original position.

    Arkansas introduces Robb Smith

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema considered adding Robb Smith to his staff several times since the two first worked together as up-and-coming assistants.

The timing finally worked out for the pair this time around.

Smith, the former Rutgers defensive coordinator who spent last season with Tampa Bay in the NFL, was hired by Bielema and the Razorbacks to fill that position over the weekend. The 38-year-old was introduced on Monday, vowing to bring an "aggressive philosophy" to a defense that allowed more than 30 points per game last season.

    A.J. Johnson, Danny O'Brien arrested

Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson and defensive lineman Danny O'Brien were arrested on alcohol-related charges and resisting arrest, authorities said Sunday.

Officers received a call about a loud party at the apartment of former Tennessee linebacker Dontavis Sapp, 22, who was also taken into custody with Johnson, 22, and O'Brien, 20, the Knox County Sheriff's Office said.

Johnson, a first-team all-Southeastern Conference selection last season, was charged with purchasing alcohol for a person underage and resisting arrest. O'Brien, a reserve nose tackle as a redshirt freshman last season, was charged with criminal impersonation, resisting arrest and underage consumption of alcohol.

    Butch Jones tempers expectations

Tennessee coach Butch Jones has shown that he can compete with the top SEC programs on the recruiting trail.

Now he just needs to turn the Volunteers into a winner on the field as well.

One day after signing what was rated as a top-five class by multiple recruiting services, Jones understands much will be expected of this group.

That much was evident Thursday as Jones spoke at recruiting celebrations in packed hotel ballrooms at Memphis and Nashville before accepting an award later in the day from the Tennessee Press Association as the state's headliner of the year, given to the person or group who has generated the most positive news within the state over the previous year.

Jones appreciates the way this recruiting class has excited a fan base that has endured four consecutive losing seasons, something Tennessee hadn't experienced since 1903-06. But he also is preaching patience.
