LB James DeLoach to have surgery

James DeLoach, the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs' projected starter at strongside linebacker, sprained the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb during Sunday's practice and will undergo surgery Monday.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said DeLoach should be back for the Bulldogs' Aug. 31 opener at Clemson, though the sophomore will practice for some time with his hand covered by a cast when he returns in the next day or two.

    Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel talk

Cam Newton can relate to what Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel is going through.

And the Carolina Panthers quarterback said Tuesday he's spoken to Manziel a few times this offseason about coping with the pressures of being a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback living college life in the limelight.

Newton wouldn't discuss the specifics of the conversations, saying they are personal, just between him and Manziel.

But he said Manziel "has to go through these types of situations to know how to handle them in the future. When somebody comes up to you and asks for your autograph, you don't know if they're going to do it for good or bad" purposes.

Like Manziel, Newton was under media scrutiny at Auburn during an NCAA investigation into pay-for-play allegations. Newton was not found to have committed any wrongdoing and wasn't suspended from any games.

"For any college athlete you are vulnerable to so many things," Newton said. "You think everybody loves you for who you are."

    Jadeveon Clowney will play opener

Get ready, North Carolina. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says a slightly banged-up Gamecocks All-American Jadeveon Clowney will play against the Tar Heels on Aug. 29.

    Jadeveon Clowney dominates

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier wasn't happy with his team's offensive showing on Saturday. Then again, it's usually difficult to move the ball against Gamecocks All-American Jadeveon Clowney.

The South Carolina junior defensive end had two sacks -- at least two other potential sacks were credited as incompletions -- in the two-hour workout at Williams-Brice Stadium, a week after sitting out a scrimmage with a bruised shoulder. He also came in virtually untouched on several other plays to pressure Gamecock quarterbacks Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson.

"We act like we didn't even try to block Clowney today," Spurrier said. "Maybe we're afraid to block him, I don't know. Hopefully, he's that good but I've seen other people block him. He doesn't get to the quarterback every play like he did today just about.

    Arkansas loses three to injuries

The second week of preseason practice left Arkansas with three significant injuries.

Following the Razorbacks second scrimmage of camp on Saturday night, first-year coach Bret Bielema said sophomore linebacker Otha Peters, senior tight end Austin Tate and senior receiver Demetrius Wilson each suffered injuries this week -- with Wilson's a season-ending knee ligament tear.

    Trey Quinn commits to LSU

In one of the deepest years for receivers in Louisiana history, LSU got one of the three high-end receivers it was after on Saturday.

Trey Quinn (Lake Charles, La./Barbe), ranked No. 37 in the ESPN 300 and No. 3 among receivers nationally, committed to the Tigers on Saturday. Quinn's father confirmed that LSU coach Les Miles accepted the commitment.

    Tide always wearing a bull's-eye

Don't even think about uttering the dreaded "D" word within earshot of Alabama coach Nick Saban.

    You know ... Dynasty.

The only thing that interests Saban less than what the Crimson Tide have accomplished to this point is what kind of legacy he's establishing at a place that already claims 15 national football championships.

"Every team stands on its own, and every team has something to prove," Saban said. "It's not a continuation. We'll find out about this team this year, and that's the only thing that any of us are concerned about."

Perhaps so, but the rest of the college football world is watching intently to see if Alabama can make it three straight national championships and four in the past five seasons.

Not since Minnesota (1934-36) has a school won three consecutive national titles in college football. None has won four outright national titles in a five-year span since Yale, which won six in seven years, from 1882 to 1888, and only a select few schools were playing football in those days.

What's more, this current run by Alabama comes at a time when college football is thriving, particularly in the SEC. Three other schools -- Auburn, Florida and LSU -- have contributed to the league's streak of seven straight national championships.

But even with the rest of the SEC flexing its collective muscle, it's difficult to see any end to Alabama's run, especially given the recruiting machine that Saban has built.

"Nobody's going to out-recruit them, and I think [Saban] could have an easy 10 more years," said South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.

"So there's no telling how many more championships he could win there. You still need some breaks here and there, but he could win more of those [national titles] than anybody. Three out of four years ... that is amazing."

Hogs' Zach Hocker adds punting role

Zach Hocker wasted little time coming to the point during his first meeting with new Arkansas coach Bret Bielema.

Hocker, already one of the most accomplished kickers in Razorbacks' history entering his senior season, told Bielema shortly after his hiring last December that wanted to achieve more. He wanted to add the job of punter to his field goal and kickoff duties.

Matt Jones, Jon Halapio ruled out

Florida will not have starting running back Matt Jones or right guard Jon Halapio for the Aug. 31 season opener, and their status for the following few weeks is uncertain.

UF coach Will Muschamp said Jones, who has missed the entire camp as he recovers from a viral infection, will undergo more blood work Friday and is questionable for the Sept. 7 game against Miami. Halapio will miss at least the first two games with a torn pectoral but could return for the 10th-ranked Gators' Sept. 21 game against Tennessee.

    Half-game penalty for Johnny Manziel

Johnny Football will start the season on the bench, but he won't be there for long.

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel of No. 7 Texas A&M has been suspended for the first half of Saturday's season opener against the Rice Owls, A&M and the NCAA announced Wednesday in a joint statement.

Antonio Morrison: 'I learned a lot'

Florida linebacker Antonio Morrison apologized Wednesday for "getting in trouble the past few weeks" but declined to discuss details of his two arrests or what he had to do as punishment.

Morrison is suspended for Saturday's season opener against Toledo. Coach Will Muschamp initially suspended the starting middle linebacker for at least two games but reduced it to one game Monday.

"First off, I want to apologize for getting in trouble the past few weeks," Morrison said. "It's sincere for me. I apologize to my coaches, my teammates and everybody for everything that went wrong. It's behind me. I'm moving forward from it. I learned from it. I just want to play football."

Morrison will be eligible to play Sept. 7, when the 10th-ranked Gators play at Miami.

Jadeveon Clowney, No. 6 South Carolina cruise past UNC in opener

South Carolina All-American Jadeveon Clowney looked less than dominant against North Carolina, not that it mattered to him or the sixth-ranked Gamecocks.

Clowney shook off a stomach virus earlier in the week -- and some sluggish play during the game -- to help South Carolina's defense hold North Carolina to its lowest point total under coach Larry Fedora in a 27-10 victory to open the season Thursday night.

Alabama mindset: One at a time

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron isn't fixating on the shot at a historic three-peat, BCS-or-bust expectations or the anointment by pollsters as the team to beat.

"I feel like if you don't think that way, you're kind of irrelevant a little to the team," McCarron said. "Everybody needs to have the same mindset. We can't worry about what everybody thinks, what everybody's predicting. Just go out and play the game and take one play at a time, one game at a time and we'll be all right."

In short, it's all about Saturday's game against Virginia Tech. In short, ignore what coach Nick Saban puts under the "external factors" umbrella.
