Bowl worthy: Vanderbilt upsets No. 17 Tennessee, 45-35

The Vanderbilt Commodores have a black bowling ball with a star "V" to celebrate earning a bowl berth on the field.

The bragging rights that go with a very big win over their in-state rival only makes the victory that much sweeter.

Kyle Shurmur threw for a career-high 416 yards, and Vanderbilt scored the final 21 points in an upset of No. 24 Tennessee 45-34 Saturday night that erased any doubts the Commodores belong in a bowl.

Switching positions has given new life to former top recruit Byron Cowart

If you go back and look at the last five players who were ranked No. 1 overall in the ESPN 300, it’s a pretty impressive group.

Two (Robert Nkemdiche and Mario Edwards Jr.) are playing in the NFL. A third (Leonard Fournette) is a potential top-10 draft pick later this month. Even last year’s No. 1 overall player (Rashan Gary) made an immediate impact at Michigan with 27 tackles, five tackles for loss and a sack this past season.

So where does that leave Byron Cowart, the No. 1 player in the 2015 class?

Kirby Smart more comfortable in Year 2 with Georgia

Kirby Smart just looks more rested, more comfortable.

He isn't quite gliding across his office's threshold, but he has a little more bounce in his steps as spring practice nears the finish line following his debut 8-5 season as Georgia's head coach.

After an up-and-down start, Smart is learning a lot more about his team and himself and is liking what he's seeing. Georgia, which will most likely be the media favorite in the SEC East this season, is far from a finished product, but Smart and his players are way ahead of where they were at this point last year.

Sheriron Jones back leaving Tennessee for second time

Tennessee quarterback Sheriron Jones is on the move again.

The school confirmed Tuesday that the redshirt sophomore has been granted his release after attempting and completing just one pass in one career game at Tennessee.

This isn't the first time that Jones has been in the news for transferring from Tennessee. In January 2016, Jones transferred from Tennessee to Colorado, but he was almost immediately granted his release there and returned to Tennessee the same month. The NCAA allowed Jones to return to Tennessee because he decided to transfer back within a 14-day window.

South Carolina players accused of assaulting man inside bar

Two current South Carolina players and a former player have been accused of assaulting a 24-year-old man inside a bar near the university's campus early Saturday.

According to a Columbia Police Department incident report, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, linebacker Skai Moore and former linebacker Jalen Dread are accused of punching a man several times after an argument at the Five Points Saloon around 3 a.m. Saturday.

None of the players has been charged with a crime, and a Columbia Police Department spokeswoman said in a statement to ESPN that an investigator "continues to gather information regarding the assault allegation in order to determine if a criminal act occurred, to identify any assailants, and to discover and gather all potential evidence."

Auburn quarterback Woody Barrett announces transfer

Auburn quarterback Woody Barrett says he's transferring.

The third-year sophomore announced his decision on Twitter on Monday but didn't say what school he planned to attend.

"I would like to take the time to thank Auburn University for welcoming me to their program," Barrett said in a statement. "However, after a long process with my family and coaches I have decided it's in my best interest to transfer."

Tim Tebow re-ups with ESPN to be analyst for SEC Network

ESPN has announced a multiyear agreement with Tim Tebow, who will continue as an analyst on the SEC Network.

Tebow has worked as a studio analyst for the SEC Network since its 2014 debut. He will remain part of SEC Nation, the network's traveling Saturday pregame show.

"Over the last three years ESPN and the SEC Nation crew have become like family," Tebow said in a news release. "I love the passion that SEC fans bring to our set every Saturday morning and I look forward to continuing to share my own love of the game with fans on ESPN and SEC Network."

Arkansas' Rawleigh Williams III ends football career after second neck injury

Arkansas' Rawleigh Williams III, who was second among SEC running backs last season with 1,360 rushing yards, has decided to give up football after suffering a second neck injury.

Williams, who would have been a junior next season, announced his decision in a heartfelt letter on Arkansas' official website. His letter was titled "Next Chapter" and comes on the heels of a neck injury he suffered during the Razorbacks' final spring scrimmage last month. Williams had to be carted off the field and taken to the hospital.

"I've seen the replay. I saw a normal hit. That scared me," Williams wrote in his letter. "It shows me it doesn't take a big hit at this point. Any little thing can trigger it. I also saw the reaction of my mom and my sister. That broke my heart. I can't do this anymore. I want to be able to walk."

Florida is still looking for a quarterback who can do what Tim Tebow did

Believe him or not, Jim McElwain sounds more confident in his quarterback room.

When asked last month whether he thought someone in his five-man quarterback room actually had the mythical "it" factor to drag Florida out of its seven-year offensive depression, he didn't hesitate to answer.

"Yeah, I believe so," McElwain said.

Enter Feleipe Franks, Luke Del Rio, Kyle Trask, Jake Allen and former Notre Dame backup Malik Zaire. There isn't much experience, but Franks' spring and summer improvements, Zaire's arrival and Del Rio's health have McElwain excited.

The Gators will be without 7, including Antonio Callaway, for season opener vs. Michigan

Florida has suspended seven players for its season-opener against Michigan on Sept. 2 (3:30 ET on ABC) -- including its top playmaker, wide receiver Antonio Callaway -- for making improper charges on their university student IDs at the school bookstore and then selling those items for cash, university officials confirmed to ESPN Sunday.

One source said that the cards did not have the proper amount of funds on them to purchase the items.

The others are offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort, linebackers James Houston and Ventrell Miller and defensive lin

Fromm replaces Eason, leads Georgia past App State, 31-10

There was no panic on the Georgia sideline when starting quarterback Jacob Eason limped off the field.

Though he's a freshman, backup Jake Fromm already has convinced his coach and teammates he's not easily intimidated.

Fromm led three first-half touchdown drives after Eason sprained his left knee, helping No. 15 Georgia beat Appalachian State 31-10 on Saturday night.

No. 13 LSU shuts down BYU, 27-0

Derrius Guice looks like he can thrive in LSU's new offense and the Tigers' inexperience on defense does not appear to be a liability whatsoever.

Guice rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 13 LSU never allowed BYU's offense to cross midfield in a 27-0 defeat of the Cougars on Saturday night.

Aggies lose QB Nick Starkel, DB Donovan Wilson after both undergo surgery

Texas A&M quarterback Nick Starkel and defensive back Donovan Wilsonwill be out for an extended period of time after each underwent surgery, coach Kevin Sumlin said Monday evening.

Sumlin, on his weekly radio show in College Station, said Starkel had surgery Monday morning for a fractured ankle and Wilson had surgery for an injured foot. Neither will be back soon, and Sumlin said he isn't certain whether they will be back in the lineup this season.
