Jeremy Hill rushes for 184 yards, 3 TDs as LSU downs Auburn Whether Jeremy Hill deserves a prominent role in LSU's offense this early in the season is a matter for debate. His offseason arrest aside, there is no denying what a game-changer the explosive, 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back can be for the surging sixth-ranked Tigers, who have quickly re-established their credentials as contenders in the Southeastern Conference. Hill rushed for a career-high 184 yards and tied a career high with three touchdowns, helping LSU defeat previously unbeaten Auburn, 35-21 on Saturday night. Running with a combination of power, agility and speed, Hill scored touchdowns of 49, 10 and 6 yards. He set up yet another score with a 54-yard scamper in which he was shoved out of bounds at the 1. Alabama still No. 1 in AP poll With most of the top teams merely tuning up, there was little movement in The Associated Press college football poll this week. Alabama remained No. 1 and the first 14 teams in the rankings held their positions from last week. The Crimson Tide did lose some support from the media panel, dropping from 59 first-place votes last week to 56. Alabama beat Colorado State 31-6 on Saturday in a game that was 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Florida's Jeff Driskel out for season Florida has lost quarterback Jeff Driskel for the season. Driskel will need surgery after breaking his right leg in the first quarter of Saturday's 31-17 win against Tennessee, coach Will Muschamp said after the game. Nathan Peterman has hand surgery Tennessee quarterback Nathan Peterman will miss at least four weeks after undergoing surgery on his right hand. Peterman injured his hand Saturday while struggling through his first college start in a 31-17 loss to No. 20 Florida. Peterman was 4 of 11 for 5 yards with two interceptions and one fumble before being replaced late in the first half by junior Justin Worley, who had started Tennessee's first three games. Peterman's injury solidifies Worley's status as Tennessee's starting quarterback, at least for now. Worley is atop Tennessee's depth chart for Saturday's game with South Alabama, while freshmen Riley Ferguson and Joshua Dobbs are listed together on the second team.
Steve Spurrier wants improvement Steve Spurrier had a simple plan for No. 12 South Carolina's bye week -- improve the Gamecocks' performance across the board. South Carolina's coach has had issues with nearly every aspect of the team's play in its first three games and said the players worked hard last week to correct mistakes. The Gamecocks (2-1) return to action at UCF (3-0) on Saturday. "Worked on covering kickoffs. Worked on punt return. Been working on those all year, though, so that was nothing new," Spurrier said Tuesday. "Worked on offense, defense, things like that. That was about it." Spurrier has been particularly unhappy with the play on special teams, as the Gamecocks are near the bottom of the SEC in most categories. He even threw his visor -- usually reserved for offensive miscues -- after a fumbled kickoff and a muffed punt against Vanderbilt. Nick Saban: 'Need to play faster' Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban hasn't been a fan of the hurry-up, no-huddle offense, but that doesn't mean he won't eventually give it a try. "It's something we're going to look at. I think we'll have to," Saban told ESPN.com on Thursday. "I think we need to play faster and will have to do more of that going forward. The only reason we haven't done more of it to this point is that our guys seem to play better when we don't [go fast] just because it's been our style and we've had reasonably good success moving the ball and running the ball. "The thing I wonder about is that if you play offense like that, then that's how you practice. You have to practice like that, so how do you really ever coach defensive players? If a guy doesn't play the right technique, you're going up and telling him and showing him how to play that block or whatever. "But, hell, they're running another play." Within five years, Saban said 80 or 90 percent of the teams in college football will be running some version of a no-huddle, hurry-up offense. "Unless they do something to slow them down, which they should, we'll probably be doing the same thing," he said. No. 1 Alabama shuts out No. 21 Mississippi Alabama responded to a week of soul-searching with a dominating defensive performance against Mississippi.
