No. 12 South Carolina loses Connor Shaw, holds off UCF

South Carolina running back Mike Davis knew what he had to do and he was ready to get it done this time.

When former Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore was lost for the season in a game last year due to a knee injury, Davis was thrust into a role he later acknowledged he wasn't quite prepared to step into.

    That was then.

This time, when starting quarterback Connor Shaw when down Saturday, there was no panic or doubt in Davis.

The sophomore running back took over the game, rushing 26 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns as No. 12 South Carolina overcame injuries, four turnovers and a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat UCF 28-25.

No. 20 Florida earns 27th straight win over Kentucky

Tyler Murphy's comfort passing and running belied the fact that he was making his first career start for No. 20 Florida. Matt Jones showed that he could hold on the ball and carry it for a lot of yards.

By raising their games, both players help lift the Gators after a difficult week.

Jones rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown and Murphy threw for 156 yards and a score as Florida beat Kentucky 24-7 on Saturday night, its 27th straight win over the Wildcats.

Todd Gurley (ankle) day to day

Georgia coach Mark Richt called tailback Todd Gurley "day to day" on Sunday after the All-SEC tailback sat out the second half of Saturday's 44-41 win against LSU with a sprained left ankle.

"It's no surgery or nothing like that," said Richt, whose team will visit Tennessee next weekend. "Just kind of get as much treatment as you can and get it ready as soon as you can."

Gurley suffered the injury at the 11:25 mark in the second quarter at the end of a 23-yard run to midfield. LSU defensive back Craig Loston was in the process of tackling him along the Tigers' sideline when Gurley rolled the ankle awkwardly and tumbled to the ground.

Gurley immediately hobbled across the field to Georgia's sideline, where a team of trainers and medical staffers examined him there and in the Bulldogs' locker room. Gurley returned to the sideline in the second quarter but did not re-enter the game. And when the Bulldogs came back from the locker room for the second half, Gurley was wearing a walking boot on his foot and it was obvious that his game was done.

    Tennessee to wear 'Smokey gray'

Tennessee will have a new look for its game Saturday with No. 6 Georgia.

Volunteers coach Butch Jones said Sunday night in an interview on "The Nation," a Knoxville-based radio show, that the team would wear its "Smokey gray" uniforms for the Georgia game. The university confirmed it immediately afterward on its football team's official Twitter account.

When Tennessee unveiled this alternate uniform in its preseason Media Day event, Jones said the Vols would wear it one home game this year without specifying a particular date. The uniform features jerseys and pants in a color it calls Smokey gray, a nod to the team's mascot. Jones noted before the season that Tennessee's 1914 team wore gray jerseys and went undefeated.

Dominique Easley to enter NFL draft

Florida defensive tackle Dominique Easley, who sustained a season-ending knee injury last week, will enter the NFL draft in 2014.

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound senior from Staten Island, N.Y., could apply for a medical redshirt and receive another year of college eligibility. But coach Will Muschamp said Monday that Easley "is definitely going to the NFL next year."

    Aaron Murray keeps Dawgs moving

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray is approaching a few hallowed SEC records as the No. 6 Bulldogs prepare to meet Tennessee on Saturday.

Murray, who ranks fourth in the nation in passing efficiency, should break former Georgia star David Greene's SEC record of 11,528 yards passing this week. Murray is 99 yards away from matching Greene's total from 2001-04.

Murray is also on the verge of breaking Florida standout Danny Wuerffel's SEC mark of 114 career touchdown passes. Murray has 106.

"It's crazy to think about," Murray said. "I've never been a guy who's worried about stats. It's all about winning, winning, winning, but it's definitely an honor to be alongside some of those guys like Greene and Wuerffel, guys who did some unbelievable things."

Murray threw four touchdown passes in a 44-41 victory over LSU last week after running back Todd Gurley left with a sprained left ankle in the first half.

"I thought Aaron played good during the game," coach Mark Richt said Tuesday. "When the game was over, I thought he had played good. Then I watched the film and I thought he played great."

Ole Miss players disrupt campus play

The University of Mississippi is investigating a student newspaper report that alleges that a handful of Ole Miss football players disrupted a university theater production of "The Laramie Project" by harassing actors with "borderline hate speech" on campus Tuesday night.

The play is based on the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard.

The Daily Mississippian reported that approximately 20 Ole Miss football players were among the disruptive audience. Play director and faculty member Rory Ledbetter told the student newspaper that members of the audience were using homosexual slurs and insulted the body types and sexual orientation of cast members.

"The football players were certainly not the only audience members that were being offensive last night," Ledbetter told the student paper, "but they were definitely the ones who seemed to initiate others in the audience to say things too. It seemed like they didn't know that they were representing the university when they were doing these things."

LSU to pipe in cowbell sounds?

LSU coach Les Miles has an idea to combat the noise when his team visits Mississippi State: More cowbell.

The Tigers, coming off a 44-41 loss to Georgia, have been preparing for Saturday's game by pumping in loud rap music during practice.

However, Miles knows from experience that if the home crowd gets riled up, his players will be hearing a different jingle.

"We're thinking that piping in cowbells is something we need to run Thursday," Miles told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "We piped in music pretty hard. Maybe the cowbells need a little tuning up."

OU's Bob Stoops after SEC again

Bob Stoops is at it again.

The Oklahoma coach took another shot at the SEC on Wednesday night, questioning the league's reputation for quality defenses just months after calling its mystique "propaganda."

"Just a few years ago, we had all the quarterbacks," Stoops said in a small session with beat reporters, according to The Oklahoman. "And now, all of a sudden, we can play a little better defense and some other people can't play defense.

"Funny how people can't play defense when they have pro-style quarterbacks over there, which we've had. They're all playing in the NFL right now."

SEC teams have had difficulty slowing down the stellar quarterbacks in their league this season, including Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Georgia's Aaron Murray and LSU's Zach Mettenberger.

Meanwhile, former Big 12 stars such as Baylor's Robert Griffin III, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill currently are playing in the NFL after terrorizing the conference's defenses with their arms in years past.

    Ankle hindering Todd Gurley

All-SEC tailback Todd Gurley warmed up before Georgia's practice Wednesday in an effort to practice for the first time this week, but his sprained left ankle had not healed to the point that he was able to participate.

"It's still just day to day," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said afterward. "He tried a little bit today in the [indoor practice room] and he couldn't go today."

Richt said there was no deadline for Gurley to return to practice in order for him to play in Saturday's game at Tennessee. Having started 16 times over the past season-plus, the sophomore back has a strong enough grasp of the Bulldogs' offensive scheme to step in on short notice if his ankle improves to the point that he can play Saturday.

No evidence against Ole Miss players

After the University of Mississippi investigated allegations that an estimated 20 football players disrupted a university theater production of "The Laramie Project" with "borderline hate speech" on Tuesday night, the university found no evidence that any players used any anti-gay slurs.

Because of what the university's Bias Incident Response Team deemed "conflicting reports" surrounding the incident, all the students and student-athletes in attendance of the show Oct. 1 will be required to attend an educational dialogue session, the response team said in a statement released Friday evening.

"The task of identifying specific individuals who were purported to have disrupted the performance is difficult because of the dark theatre, and initial reports vary in regard to the frequency, volume and source of the comments or disruption," the statement read. "Although initial reports indicate that student-athletes led the action, it is important to note that this has not been verified and they were not the only students present. Reports indicate that comments were made by student athletes and students but no report has singled out a specific student or mentioned any names."

AJ McCarron throws 4 TD passes as Alabama routs Georgia State

The ball seldom hit the ground, regardless of which Alabama quarterback was throwing the passes.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide's defense also held its third straight opponent out of the end zone.

AJ McCarron completed 15 of 16 passes for 166 yards and four touchdowns in the first half and Alabama was brutally efficient in rolling to a 45-3 victory over Georgia State on Saturday.

Georgia rallies late, escapes Tennessee in overtime

Georgia's national title hopes kept shrinking as its injury list kept growing.

Then Aaron Murray and Marshall Morgan came to the rescue and saved the sixth-ranked Bulldogs' championship aspirations.

Morgan kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime after Murray threw a game-tying touchdown pass with 5 seconds remaining in regulation Saturday as Georgia overcame a flurry of injuries in a 34-31 victory at Tennessee.

No. 10 LSU pulls away to beat Mississippi State

Zach Mettenberger surveyed the field with plenty of time to throw and then delivered a perfect spiral to Odell Beckham Jr., who stopped short of the sideline, spun inside and galloped 33 yards untouched for the touchdown.

It was the ninth and final time the two hooked up for a completion Saturday night. And it proved to be the knockout blow.

Mettenberger threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, Beckham had 179 yards receiving and two TDs and No. 10 LSU blew past Mississippi State for a 59-26 victory.

No. 13 South Carolina wins minus Jadeveon Clowney

Steve Spurrier promised this week to be more positive about No. 13 South Carolina. It was hard, though, to hide his displeasure about Jadeveon Clowney's absence.

Clowney came to the coaches before the game and said that bruised ribs that kept him from practice Thursday were too sore for him to play. So the 6-foot-6, 274-pound All-American watched the Gamecocks' 35-28 win over Kentucky from the sidelines, chatting with teammates as South Carolina lost a large lead for the third straight game.

Solomon Patton carves up Arkansas, sparks No. 18 Florida's rout

Patton turned two short receptions into touchdowns, helping the 18th-ranked Gators beat Arkansas 30-10 Saturday night. The 5-foot-9 senior nicknamed "Solo" was pretty close to being a one-man show in the Swamp.

Auburn upsets No. 24 Ole Miss behind Nick Marshall

Auburn's Nick Marshall can't be judged only by his passing yards.

The Tigers are using Marshall's legs to regain respect in the Southeastern Conference.

Marshall ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns, Robenson Therezie scored on a 78-yard interception return and Auburn held off No. 24 Mississippi 30-22 on Saturday night for its first win over a Top 25 team in two years.
