Florida careless with the ball, drops game at Vanderbilt

Florida's Kiara Smith pictured during a Jan. 28, 2021 game against Mizzou. Smith led Florida with 18 points
versus Vanderbilt Thursday, but 28 turnovers plagued the Gators.

Nina Rickards faced a dwindling shot clock and a six-point deficit.

The junior guard took one dribble inside from the left wing. She tried to rise up for a jumper, but the ball squeaked out of her hands before she could leave the floor.

    The incident wasn’t special.

Rickards’ miscue was a small part of a long, painful night for the Gators offense that made mistakes like a broken record.

No. 15 Florida (20-8, 10-5 SEC) coughed up the ball a miserable season-high 28 times in a 63-59 loss at Vanderbilt (13-16, 4-11 SEC) Thursday. The Commodores beat the Gators at their own game, finessing Florida with a turnover-fueled 28 points off errors.

Hogs Drop Heartbreaker, Fall To #25 Georgia, 63-62

Arkansas Women’s Basketball (16-12, 6-9) fought hard but fell in its home finale on Thursday night, as a free throw from Jenna Staiti proved to be the difference as No. 25 Georgia (19-8, 8-7) prevailed, 63-62. Makayla Daniels had two chances to get the lead back for the Hogs, but was whistled for an offensive foul and then turned the ball over on the game’s last possession.

Missouri spoils Florida’s senior night; Tigers beat Gators 78-73

The final game of the regular season for the Florida Women’s Basketball team was supposed to end with its seniors being honored for their contribution to the program, and a win against Missouri.

Only one of those two things happened.

Despite leading 20-10 with 7:37 to play in the second quarter, the Gators (20-9) allowed the Tigers (18-11) to go on a 19-2 run to close the first half, and were never able to recover, losing 78-73 to suffer their third consecutive loss to close out the regular season.

No. 8 LSU women hold on to beat No. 16 Tennessee 57-54

With three seconds left in the game, No. 8 LSU led No. 16 Tennessee by three points. The Lady Volunteers had the ball out of bounds on their side the court.

Tigers coach Kim Mulkey turned to strategy, putting 6-foot-5 Hannah Gusters on Jordan Walker, who was inbounding the ball, as a distraction.

“We left (Tess) Darby (one of Tennessee's top 3-point shooters) wide open, but with a big on the ball, they were distracted and never saw her," Mulkey said.

Then Khayla Pointer came up with the steal and sealed LSU's 57-54 victory Sunday. It gave the Tigers the No. 2 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament, while the Lady Volunteers settled for No. 3. Both will have double-byes and won’t play until Friday.

Alabama Women's Basketball Fends Off Georgia Comeback Effort in SEC Tournament, 74-62

Back in early January, Alabama women's basketball took a double digit lead into halftime in Athens, as the Crimson Tide was set to upset Georgia on their home floor. The Bulldogs ultimately stormed back to win, stunning Alabama and defending their ranked status.

Alabama Women's Basketball Unable to Topple Tennessee in SEC Quarterfinals, 74-59

Through its first two games of the SEC Tournament, Alabama had relied greatly on driving to the basket and having the ability to kick the ball out for a high percentage three. On Friday, the shots did not fall early for Alabama.

The No. 11 seed Alabama was unable to maintain its hot streak through the SEC Tournament as No. 3 seed Tennessee dominated the quarterfinal game from start to finish, giving Alabama the 74-59 loss.
