Balance, stifling defense lead No. 8 Florida over N. Florida

There was no dancing to be done for Aminu or any other North Florida players when the game ended. No. 8 Florida's potent offense and stifling defense ensured that.

Led by six double-figure scorers and an unrelenting defensive assault, Florida dominated the Ospreys 108-68 on Thursday night.

No. 16 Texas A&M pulls away from UC Santa Barbara 84-65

After missing the final seven games of his sophomore season with a left foot injury, Texas A&M forward DJ Hogg is making up for lost time.

He scored 24 points, 19 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and No. 16 Texas A&M won its home opener going away, 84-65 against UC Santa Barbara on Friday night. The junior made 5 of 7 3-point attempts, making him 9 of 13 on the young season.

No. 7 Kentucky cruises past East Tennessee State, 78-61

Putting away an opponent for once doesn't mean Kentucky's young roster is turning the corner toward maturity.

The seventh-ranked Wildcats had promising moments against East Tennessee State to offset play that frustrated coach John Calipari.

Quade Green scored a career-high 21 points, Kevin Knox had 17 points with 10 rebounds and Kentucky overcame an early deficit to run away from the Buccaneers 78-61 on Friday night.

Michael Porter Jr. to have back surgery, likely out for rest of season

Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr. insisted before the season that he was not necessarily a one-and-done player who would leave next year for the riches of the NBA.

The standout forward will have plenty of downtime to consider his future after the school announced Tuesday that he would miss the rest of the season after lower back surgery. The procedure, called a microdiscectomy, was scheduled in Dallas, and the expected recovery time is three to four months.

The injury is a staggering blow for last year's top high school recruit, just as it is for a Missouri program excited for the future following his arrival and the talented recruiting class that followed him to Columbia.

No. 8 Kentucky holds off Troy down the stretch for 70-62 win

The growing pains continue for Kentucky's youngsters, who this time struggled to finish off an opponent rather than overcome it.

Kevin Knox scored 17 points and the No. 8 Wildcats built a big lead in the second half before withstanding a late rally by Troy to hold on for a 70-62 victory on Monday night.

No. 16 Texas A&M routs Oklahoma State behind Williams

Robert Williams was asked whether he detected hesitancy from the Oklahoma State Cowboys to challenge him in the paint.

The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year grinned, then laughed.

    Question answered.

"I do my best not even just to block it but to contest it," Williams said after scoring 11 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and a throwing down handful of alley-oop dunks to help No. 16 Texas A&M beat Oklahoma State 72-55 in the first game of the 2017 Progressive Legends Classic on Monday night.

No. 8 Kentucky finally has it easy against Fort Wayne, 86-67

How No. 8 Kentucky finally won comfortably pleased coach John Calipari as much as the fact his young team ran away from Fort Wayne.

Nick Richards' breakout performance was among many areas where Calipari praised his young Wildcats.

Richards had career highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds, and 70 percent first-half shooting propelled Kentucky to an 86-67 rout Wednesday night.

Tennessee tops No. 18 Purdue 78-75 (OT) in Battle 4 Atlantis

Tennessee kept attacking the glass and playing aggressive defense on No. 18 Purdue's shooters.

Once Grant Williams got going, the Volunteers had enough scoring punch, too.

Williams scored all 22 of his points after halftime and hit the go-ahead shot with 14.5 seconds left in overtime to lift Tennessee past No. 18 Purdue 78-75 in Wednesday's opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

No. 16 Texas A&M pulls away from Pepperdine for 81-65 win

Fresh from winning the Progressive Legends Classic and thinking ahead to a Sunday matchup with No. 10 Southern Cal, Texas A&M didn't look interested in playing Pepperdine on Friday night.

That lack of fire for the first 33 minutes put the Waves in position for an upset, but the Aggies woke up and pulled away for an 81-65 victory.

No. 25 Alabama tops BYU in Barclays Center Classic

To hear Avery Johnson speak, the importance of preseason tournaments for his young team can be distilled to one word.

"Exposure," Johnson said after No. 25 Alabama's 71-59 win over BYU in the Barclays Center Classic on Friday.

Georgia holds off No. 21 Saint Mary's 83-81 in OT

Georgia coach Mark Fox figured he had a simple enough decision to make before playing No. 21 Saint Mary's in the third-place game of the Wooden Legacy tournament Sunday.

Either try to shut down Saint Mary's from the 3-point line or clamp down around the paint.

For much of the night it appeared he had made the wrong choice, Saint Mary's continually scoring on layups, but the Bulldogs weathered a comeback to hold off the Gaels 83-81 in overtime.

    No. 16 Texas A&M beats No. 10 USC 75-59

Texas A&M brought a boxing mindset into its game against No. 10 Southern California. The Aggies landed the first punch and then delivered the knockout blow.

D.J. Hogg scored 15 points and the 16th-ranked Aggies pulled away for good with a 19-3 run in the second half to win 75-59 on Sunday night in the first matchup of ranked opponents at Galen Center since 2007.

Knox leads No. 8 Kentucky past Illinois-Chicago, 107-73

Kentucky coach John Calipari reached a milestone when the Wildcats played their best game of the season.

Kevin Knox scored a career-high 25 points to lead No. 8 Kentucky to a 107-73 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago on Sunday night to conclude play in the Adolph Rupp Classic.

    No. 9 Texas A&M beats Texas-Rio Grande Valley 78-60

Texas A&M guard Admon Gilderclaimed the Aggies had a slow start Thursday, long before their tipoff against Texas-Rio Grande Valley.

"We had a slow shootaround, which carried over to the game," Gilder said.

It certainly didn't carry over for the 5 minutes.

Gilder and fellow guard D.J. Hogg scored 17 points each and the ninth-ranked Aggies used a 16-0 start on the way to a 78-60 victory over UTRGV.

No. 7 Kentucky leads big before holding off Harvard 79-70

Just as No. 7 Kentucky seemed headed toward blowing out another opponent, the Wildcats suddenly lost the focus and accuracy that had Harvard on the brink.

The pesky Crimson took advantage down the stretch to get within single digits, only lacking enough time to make things even tenser against a team still learning that a 20-point lead should be a starting point toward finishing off games.

"We have to be able to put our foot on their throats and get good plays and good shots and not try to turn into a selfish team," freshman forward Kevin Knox said after scoring 20 points in Kentucky's 79-70 victory Saturday over the Crimson. "I think that's what we do when we start to get up, people start trying to get their own. Next thing, they're (only) down eight."

    No. 7 Texas A&M beats Prairie View A&M 73-53

Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy said it's that time of year to guard against natural comforts -- aka playing at home against an allegedly lesser opponent.

"Sometimes those are hard games on the coaches," Kennedy said. "You know how hard it is to motivate your guys and get them ready to play. You know that you're capable of losing to some of those teams that you play."

The No. 7 Aggies appeared capable of losing to Prairie View A&M early in the second half on Saturday, before finally waking up and walking away with a 73-53 victory.

Barford, Gafford lead Arkansas past No. 14 Minnesota, 95-79

Jaylen Barford was still learning what major college basketball was all about a year ago as a first-year junior college transfer when Arkansas went to Minnesota and lost by 14 points.

This time around, the Razorbacks senior had a clear idea of how to attack the 14th-ranked Golden Gophers -- and he had plenty of help along the way.

Led by Barford's 22 points, Arkansas (7-2) returned the favor from last year's loss with a 95-79 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night. It did so while continuing what's been nothing short of an offensive onslaught in Bud Walton Arena to open the season, raising its home scoring average to 93.2 points per game with the win.

Diallo scores 23, No. 8 Kentucky beats Monmouth 93-76

During a recent practice, Kentucky coach John Calipari noticed freshman guard Hamidou Diallo was pulling his hand back after launching jump shots.

The technique worried Calipari, so as he recalled, he forced the New York City product to "keep his follow through."

Based on what transpired at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, coach knows best.

"He's trying to do what we're asking him to do," Calipari said after Diallo scored a season-high 23 points and No. 8 Kentucky beat Monmouth 93-76. "Less is more for him."

No. 24 Tennessee beats Lipscomb 81-71 for 4th straight win

Playing as a ranked team for the first time in seven years, Tennessee reacted as if it's a fixture in the Top 25.

Grant Williams overcame early foul trouble to collect 19 points and eight rebounds as Tennessee beat Lipscomb 81-71 Saturday for its fourth straight win. The Volunteers entered the Top 25 this week, their first appearance in the poll since December 2010.
