No. 4 Wichita State hangs on, moves to 22-0

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall had a schedule planned for this week.

In a subdued locker room following the fourth-ranked Shockers' 57-45 victory over Loyola of Chicago on Tuesday night, Marshall did not need to inform his players that the schedule would be altered.

No. 4 Wichita St. starts slow but recovers to rip Evansville

It seems the only way anybody from the Missouri Valley Conference is going to spoil No. 4 Wichita State's unbeaten season is if the Shockers spot them a big enough lead.

So far, even that hasn't mattered a whole lot.

After allowing Evansville to race out to a 15-point lead on Saturday, the Shockers roared back behind big games from Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker. The guards scored 14 points apiece to lead the Shockers to an 81-67 victory at Koch Arena.

No. 4 Wichita State thwarts Indiana State to stay unbeaten

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall looked at the scoreboard with 85 seconds left Wednesday night, saw the two-point lead and challenged his players to do one thing.

    Keep Indiana State scoreless.

The fourth-ranked Shockers heeded their coach's advice, outscored the Sycamores 7-2 over the final 2:01 and hung on for a 65-58 victory that kept them unbeaten.

Wichita State drops Northern Iowa to improve to 25-0

The only way Wichita State can answer all the questions about its schedule is win every game on it.

After finishing its toughest week of the season with two more wins, an undefeated regular season is a real possibility.

Tekele Cotton scored 18 points and fourth-ranked Wichita State beat Northern Iowa 82-73 on Saturday night, clearing perhaps its toughest remaining regular-season hurdle.

No. 4 Wichita State overcomes sloppy play, moves to 26-0

Wichita State funneled into the locker room for some sage advice from coach Gregg Marshall, and wound up getting a little wisdom from Emmy Award-winner Kirstie Alley instead.

"She said to the guys, `Don't read the reviews, the positive ones and the negative ones. Just play the game," Marshall said after a 78-67 victory over Southern Illinois that ran the No. 4 Shockers' record to 26-0. "So you're getting it from a Hollywood star."

No. 4 Shockers trump Aces, extend school-record streak to 27-0

No. 4 Wichita State relied on the basics Sunday: defense and ball security.

Again, it was the perfect combination.

The Shockers forced 18 turnovers, finished with a season-high 14 steals and finally locked down Evansville's shooters late to pull away for an 84-68 victory that kept them one of the nation's two undefeated teams.

No. 3 Wichita State handles Loyola, is nation's last unbeaten

Fred VanVleet attempted six shots from the field and made them all. He took 10 foul shots, and every one of those went in, too.

Just another perfect line for Wichita State on Wednesday night.

VanVleet scored 22 points, and the third-ranked Shockers beat Loyola of Chicago 88-74 to remain the only unbeaten team in major college basketball.

Re: No. 3 Wichita State handles Loyola, is nation's last unbeaten

Wichita State went to the Final Four last year, yet there was something missing for that team: a Missouri Valley Conference championship.

This season the Shockers were focused on not letting that happen.

So after No. 3 Wichita State routed Drake 83-54 Saturday night behind Tekele Cotton's 21 points and Darius Carter's 15, the Shockers relished cutting down the nets to celebrate a conference title that seemed like a foregone conclusion some time ago.

No. 2 Wichita State finishes perfect regular season with rout

Baker finished with 13 points, Cleanthony Early led the way with 19 and the second-ranked Shockers rolled to a 68-45 victory over Missouri State on Saturday, becoming the first team since Saint Joseph's in 2004 to enter its conference tournament unbeaten.

No. 2 Wichita St. now 32-0 with win in Missouri Valley tournament

No. 2 Wichita State is still perfect. Calm and collected, too, in a 32nd straight win.

The top-seeded Shockers stayed unbeaten with an 80-58 romp over Evansville in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley tournament Friday.

No. 2 Wichita St. pounds Missouri St. to reach 33-0

All those runaway wins, it's hard for unbeaten Wichita State to pick a favorite.

Blowouts have become the norm for the Shockers. It keeps them loose during games and after.

    Inline1>

"I can't remember which one was our best game, but if you think so, then OK," point guard Fred VanVleet said after the second-ranked Shockers encountered little resistance in a 67-42 rout of Missouri State in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals on Saturday.

No. 2 Wichita State (34-0) wins Missouri Valley Conference tournament

Wichita State's still perfect. And proudly awaiting a No. 1 seed.

After the nation's only unbeaten made another put-away run in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament title game, guard Fred VanVleet fired back at doubters who cast aspersions on a schedule ranked 113th in the nation.

"You can debate what you want to debate. Facts are facts, truth is truth," VanVleet, the conference player of the year, said after the second-ranked Shockers beat Indiana State 83-69 on Sunday to go to 34-0. "We're not into debating how good or great we are or how bad somebody else.

San Diego State survives after New Mexico State forces OT

And to think, we've only just begun.

"March Madness" morphed into "The Longest Day" on Thursday, after San Diego State and New Mexico State went to overtime, marking the record fourth game of the day to extend the extra 5 minutes.

The fourth-seeded Aztecs pulled out a 73-69 victory after letting a 14-point lead slip away in regulation.

Cleanthony Early, Shockers dominate 16-seed Cal Poly

The 35-0 record stands out in bold face.

Putting the historic implications aside, Wichita State's latest victims are believers they got schooled by a team most deserving of a top seed and capable of beating anybody, anytime.

"Oh every bit of it, every bit of it," Cal Poly coach Joe Callero said after his team was never in contention in a 64-37 loss in the Midwest Region on Friday night.

Wichita State grinds past New Mexico State 71-54

With six newcomers, five of them freshmen, coming off his bench, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was prepared for some inconsistency in the season opener.

Cruising to a 71-54 victory over New Mexico State Friday night was anything but inconsistent for the No. 11 Shockers.

Fred VanVleet, Ron Baker combine to lead Wichita State past Tulsa

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was thrilled his star guards Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker received so much preseason recognition.

He is even happier the attention does not affect their play.

VanVleet, a preseason All-American, had 21 points and nine assists. Baker, also on the Wooden Award watch list, made six 3-pointers and had 19 points, leading No. 9 Wichita State to a 75-55 victory over Tulsa on Saturday.
