Anson Winder, Matt Carlino power BYU upset of No. 25 Zags

BYU has been fighting to stay in the picture for an NCAA tournament at-large bid after piling up potentially damaging losses in West Coast Conference play. Poor perimeter defense has been a culprit in many of those setbacks.

It appears the Cougars might have finally turned a corner in their efforts to contain teams from doing damage from the outside.

BYU beat No. 25 Gonzaga 73-65 on Thursday night in large part because it found ways to prevent the Bulldogs from making 3-pointers. The Cougars held Gonzaga to 22.2 percent shooting (4-of-18) from beyond the arc. Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. combined for three 3-point field goals in 13 attempts.

Gonzaga holds off BYU comeback to win WCC title

Gonzaga has been the class of the West Coast Conference, hoisting regular-season and tournament trophies for nearly two decades.

Even for a team such as this, finishing off another title sweep is a feel-good accomplishment.

Sam Dower Jr. had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Gonzaga held its ground during a second-half rally to beat BYU 75-64 on Tuesday night for its 13th WCC championship.

    Loyola Marymount fires Max Good

Loyola Marymount parted ways with Max Good on Tuesday.

Former Charlotte Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Good, according to sources.

Dunlap, 56, spent the 2012-13 season as the head coach of the Bobcats and was fired after a 21-61 record. He was previously an assistant coach at Arizona, Oregon and St. John's -- where he was the interim head coach for a season while Steve Lavin stepped away due to health issues.

Gaels storm back to beat Utah 70-58

Kerry Carter wasn't bothered after he missed his first five shots. The Saint Mary's guard was even less concerned after backcourt mate Stephen Holt fouled out.

Having already helped the Gaels cut a big second-half deficit to single digits, Carter knew none of that mattered.

Carter scored 10 points over the final 5 minutes and Saint Mary's stormed back from 10 points down in the second half to beat Utah 70-58 on Tuesday in the first round of the NIT.

They took that anger out on the Lions in the second half, opening with a 30-4 run to bury the visitors and coast to a 76-57 victory.

No. 8 Gonzaga struggles past Cal Poly 63-50

Any mention of what might be on the horizon for No. 8 Gonzaga was put off until after its yearly visit to KeyArena.

It was brought up in the locker room only briefly, but it was acknowledged that the Bulldogs could be back in the same building a few months down the road when the NCAA tournament returns to Seattle.

"I hope. That would be nice. We have so many Zag fans out there," Gonzaga's Gary Bell Jr. said.

Kevin Pangos scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half, and No. 8 Gonzaga struggled to shake pesky Cal Poly before pulling away for a 63-50 win Saturday night.
