No. 8 Gonzaga rallies to beat BYU 87-80

It took more than a half of basketball before Gonzaga found the right formula for pulling away from Brigham Young.

Kyle Wiltjer scored 24 points and Kevin Pangos had 21 points and seven assists, helping No. 8 Gonzaga rally for an 87-

Wiltjer helps No. 7 Gonzaga beat San Diego 60-48

Gonzaga was held nearly 24 points below its average, and it didn't really matter.

Kyle Wiltjer scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and the No. 7 Bulldogs built a big enough lead to withstand a 7-minute scoring drought in the second half and beat San Diego 60-48 on Monday night.

Gonzaga coach Mark Few expected Portland to make a run in the second half. When the Pilots rallied, the seventh-ranked Bulldogs were up to the challenge.

Kevin Pangos and Prezemek Karnowski scored 21 points each to lead Gonzaga to an 87-75 victory over Portland on Saturday night. Gary Bell Jr. had 12 points and Byron Wesley added 10 to help the Bulldogs (14-1, 3-0 West Coast) win their seventh straight.

It had been more than three weeks since No. 6 Gonzaga played in Spokane, and star guard Kevin Pangos was enjoying the comforts of home.

"It was kind of relaxing," Pangos said after scoring 17 points to help Gonzaga beat San Francisco 88-57 on Thursday night for its eighth straight victory.

Basketball is considered a game of speed. For center Przemek Karnowski of No. 6 Gonzaga, the key to his success this season has been slowing his game down.

Karnowski scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Gonzaga beat Santa Clara 79-57 on Saturday.

Gonzaga got caught in unusually bad Los Angeles traffic, needing over two hours to reach Pepperdine. Then the third-ranked Zags got rattled against the scrappy Waves, whose raucous crowd did its best to will them to the upset.

Kyle Wiltjer scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half and freshman Domantas Sabonis had 18 points on a career-best 9-for-9 shooting to go with a career-high 12 rebounds in a 78-76 victory Thursday night, the Zags' 27th in a row over the Waves.

Gary Bell Jr. broke out of a three-game single-digit scoring slump, and Gonzaga turned it up on the defensive end to complete a weekend sweep in Los Angeles.

Bell Jr. led four players in double figures with 17 points and the third-ranked Zags pulled away in the second half to beat Loyola Marymount 72-55 Saturday for their 11th straight win over the Lions.

Saint Mary's and Gonzaga have fought some epic basketball battles in recent years. And for 25 minutes Thursday night, it appeared this might be another.

But Gonzaga's defense clamped down and the No. 3 Bulldogs went on a 22-2 run to blow open a close game and cruise to a 68-47 victory that gave them sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.

The plan for No. 3 Gonzaga was to get defensive stops early against Pacific on Saturday night.

    It worked.

Przemek Karnowski and Gary Bell Jr. each scored 13 points as Gonzaga jumped to a big early lead and routed Pacific 91-60, extending the nation's longest home winning streak to 36 games.

Kevin Pangos launched a long 3-pointer that missed early in the second half against Portland.

But third-ranked Gonzaga rebounded the ball and it came back out to Pangos, who shot from about the same place and sank that 3 to help break open a close game and lift the Bulldogs to a 64-46 victory Thursday night.

Gonzaga's three big men have the Bulldogs ranked first in the nation in field goal percentage.

After 10 straight West Coast Conference wins, No. 3 Gonzaga needed a test from an athletic program like Memphis.

Przemek Karnowski scored 17 points and Kyle Wiltjer added 15 to help the Bulldogs beat the Tigers 82-64 on Saturday night for their 15th straight victory.

As soon as Gonzaga stopped giving the ball away, the Bulldogs shot their way to another victory.

Byron Wesley scored 17 points and keyed a crucial second-half run that helped No. 2 Gonzaga rally for its 16th straight win with a 77-63 victory over Santa Clara on Thursday night.

After struggling last week in wins at Santa Clara and San Francisco, Gonzaga was looking for a bit of a breather.

    Enter Loyola Marymount.

Gonzaga scored the first 20 points of the game and cruised to an 80-51 win over the Lions on Thursday night.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- On a day when Gonzaga's high-flying offense wasn't clicking, the Bulldogs turned to guard Kevin Pangos and their stingy defense to beat stubborn Pepperdine.

Pangos scored 19 points and the third-ranked Bulldogs took over in the second half of a 56-48 victory Saturday.

For all the frustration it caused, the slower and sometimes sluggish way No. 3 Gonzaga was forced to play Thursday night by San Diego could prove to be a benefit.

There is a good chance the Bulldogs will have to play that way sometime in March.

Przemek Karnowski scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, Domantas Sabonis added 11 off the bench, and Gonzaga overcame a sluggish first half to beat San Diego 59-39 for its 22nd straight victory.

For Gonzaga, it's on to the next round. For North Dakota State, it's back to the grocery store.

Kyle Wiltjer scored 23 points Friday night to lift the second-seeded Bulldogs to an 86-76 victory over a scrappy, fun-to-watch No. 15 seed from Fargo that practices in a warehouse and lifts weights in an out-of-commission supermarket.

Sabonis, Wiltjer lead No. 10 Gonzaga over N. Arizona 91-52

Domantas Sabonis hurt his back in Gonzaga's exhibition game against Eastern Oregon, and then saw the No. 10 Bulldogs' regular season opener against Pittsburgh get canceled after one half because of a slippery court.

"I really wanted to play a full game," Sabonis said.

    Did he ever.

Sabonis scored 26 points and Kyle Wiltjer added 23 to help Gonzaga beat Northern Arizona 91-52 on Wednesday night.
