Nate, you’ve been so pessimistic at times over the years that I guess you must be perpetually “born yesterday”.

I didn’t even remember the season, was quite a while ago now…Kind of weird to think about the fact that more time has passed since the 2004-06 seasons than had passed before I was born.

We would have been in for much worse if BRoy and LA didn’t save us from it.

Could argue McMillan helped as well.

It’s been over a year and people still don’t understand this thread.

It means you didn’t actually read the thread. Try reading the thread and not just the title.

    I read plenty.
You have no clue what was the worst this team has been.
Your original post pretty much said it all. Nothing changed after that.
Even more sad is you used Telfair to make your point.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
He's using "worst" to mean "disappointing." Nothing was expected of the Telfair teams, so them producing nothing wasn't disappointing.

Using the word "worst" instead of "disappointing" is Nate's Buzzfeed side coming out.

Because my view point isn’t as narrow as just wins and losses. I made that clear.

Because narrowing “worst” to only be wins and losses is extremely limiting.

We pissed away the career of arguably the best player in team history. To me that’s the worst.

Drexler got to the finals twice. He had a shot.

    Walton won a ring.

Roy was cut short by injuries.

Dame has been here 10 years and we haven’t done shit.

Maybe. I mean, another person could say that the Blazers team that lost to the Bulls in the Finals was the "worst" because losing a legitimate title shot is the most disappointing thing and they're not limiting "worst" to wins and losses.

It's a weird usage IMO, but I'm not here to impose limits upon you!

And really the dame portion was only part of it. Last years team was extremely selfish. Horrible iso ball.

And at this point I really wouldn't mind to watch young guys playing fun basketball, doing alley oops and shit and not going into the playoffs. Being in the playoffs after all this years, when you know that most probable outcome is first exit on the motorway is no fun. It is more like slap on the face.

There's definitely a difference between 'worst' team and 'most disappointing' team. Let's have some fun -

As I posted earlier, the team average PER indicates how good the talent is on the team. We can then compare that to how well the team performed, and we get this graph:

    upload_2021-11-15_13-44-43.png

From this chart, we can estimate the WL% given a team's talent based on the linear relationship WL% = 0.1459(PER) - 1.6988.

If we take the difference between what the team 'should' have achieved given the talent available, versus what the team actually achieved, here are the most underachieving teams in Blazers history:

    upload_2021-11-15_13-51-24.png

Yes, the 2022 season is young, but it's already up there close to the most underachieving Blazers team ever.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
That's an interesting look at it, thanks. The main problem with it is that PER doesn't measure defense (beyond the most superficial level of steals and blocks) and defensive talent is where many of us think this team is lacking. Beyond that, the other major criticism of PER is that it rewards chucking, even inefficiently--all else held equal, more shot attempts -> higher PER.

However, I think there is a definite truth illustrated in both 2022 and 2020 being so high on the list (and I wouldn't be surprised if more Olshey teams are in the top ten): a big criticism I, and others, have had of Olshey is that he hasn't put together rosters that fit well together. Amassing a certain amount of talent that either doesn't fit well together or doesn't fit well with this era's style of play seems like a good way to underperform in an analysis like this.
