Memphis has talent, but absolutely no inside presence at all. Gay and Mayo are good, but that franchise doesn't have a winning culture at all, none of those players believe they can win. It's like becoming a Clipper, you know you're not going to win when you play for them. And I bet Gay bolts when he has the chance to be a FA.

?? I'm pretty sure Mayo thinks he can win every game he plays. Confidence is not an issue with him and he thinks he is the next Michael Jordan.

Hey now, they got cap space where FAs will line up to go to Memphis! They got Marc Gasol who's the second coming of! .... no one. He's OK I guess. But that trade was very even because it turned LA into title contenders and Memphis is still..... uh, Memphis.

Experience enough 25-30 win seasons and being with the Grizzlies, and that confidence will wane.. He's only 26 games into his career.
Kind of like how Mike Bibby just was stuck in a rut with them, and he escaped and became one of the most clutch players in the NBA with Sacramento.
And Shareef Abdur-Rahim... who seemingly never got out of that funk to play for a winner.

Seriously, who do they think they can lure there anymore? They are going to have to offer some mid-level player like Trevor Ariza a MAX contract to convince them to come.

Mayo is completely different than Bibby and SAR. He's going to be much better than either of them and has winner written all over him. Neither of those guys had the swagger Mayo does either, or the work ethic.

Well, according to Chris Wallace, he said FAs will follow the money... which is true but when you've got NY, NJ, Detroit and other teams to compete with, you're getting nobody good.

I compare it to Chicago's situation awhile back where they had a ton of cap space after tanking it a few seasons. They tried to lure McGrady, Grant Hill and that FA class, but they signed somewhere else and Chicago was left with just a bunch of cap space and a really bad team.
They ended up signing Eddie Robinson and Ron Mercer to bloated contracts, and that didn't turn out too good.

I'll believe it when I see Mayo help them to the playoffs in the next few years. He's a hell of a player, but I have a feeling he'll bolt too when he gets the chance to play in a bigger market and a winner.

I think it's easy to project best-case scenarios for young teams that haven't had any success... I can totally get why some are high on Memphis.

Portland, of course, is not a perfect team, and it's easier (now that they've had some success) to consider them more of a finished product than a team like Memphis.

It's bad logic, I think, but I can understand how some might fall for it.

I don't doubt that at all, I just didn't agree with the statement of every Memphis player not believing they can win a game
