Marcos Flores to be lured away from Adelaide United Bastards! You're taking our best player! Oh well, c'est la vie. Attacking midfielder, plays in the hole, great passer, good finisher, really protects the space around the ball well, has greatly lifted his work-rate, and endurance during his time in the A-League. Here's some highlights from the A-League thread. Sorry DUB Is he better than Fred? Our management has been hyping up some mystery central midfielder for quite some time. The offer is said to be 7 figures and even up to 2m. I'm not sure if that is just the transfer fee or a combination of the transfer fee and the players salary though.
Cheers. I'm not happy about it, but we're a selling league, and a 7 figure transfer fee would ease the pain. Yes. I don't know if I'd be playing him in a two man central midfield, unless the other CM is a defensive enforcer. We played him in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, sometimes even further forward as a striker in a 4-4-2.
Thanks for the info! He sounds just like what the Timbers have been describing for a couple months now.
Something maybe not mentioned in the papers, is that he's a pretty laid back guy; seems very "Portland" to me.
May not be true: http://www.oregonlive.com/timbers/index.ssf/2011/03/portland_timbers_no_dp_interes.html
I read that yesterday, but it doesn't say that you're not interested in him, just that you don't want him as your designated player. I don't know how the MLS salary cap works, can you still get him for a 7 figure transfer fee, but give him a lower wage? Are signing bonuses included in the salary cap?
Decision to stay not mine: Flores Who knows though? It could just be his agent playing games.
We'll see MLS's rules are about as complicated as the NBA's. Each team usually has some amount of "allocation money" which is awarded to expansion teams and to teams who lose players to other clubs. It's some percentage of the transfer fee. If a player leaves on a free transfer I think the MLS team gets some predetermined amount of Allocation Money. Allocation Money can be exchanged in trades between clubs, and sometimes teams use it to purchase players outright. It's also used in international transfer fees which is something MLS has just started doing recently. Before all player were acquired on a free. DP contracts count as 335k against the cap, which MLS pays, and the team picks up the difference. A team can use its allocation money to buy down the players cap number to I think no less than 175k. I've heard that MLS's 2.65(?) cap is usually closer to about 4m. I'm not sure if that average includes all of the DP contracts though. So in dudes case; if the Timbers don't want him as a DP, it means they are offering him less than 335k and will pay the Adelaide United the rest. I'd think the best player in the A-League is worth a lot more than that. And then to ask him to come on a trial? Maybe they are saying if he meets certain incentives he'll be awarded a DP contract the following season? I don't know, but it's not adding up. I really like that last video you posted of him. I'll be heartbroken if we don't land him
No doubt! Good looking kid. Man he has got some touch on the ball, upon further research it's no wonder, he's Argentinian, it's in his blood. Come on Flores, Adelaide is like the size of Vancouver, WA, were talking Portland Here!!! Easy choice!
The Cascadia Cup was the MLS match of the week on ESPN here (we only get one MLS match a week). Flores is better than anyone you put out on the park in that match. I reckon this whole thing was just Adelaide United playing the media; trying to generate interest in Flores with the New York Cosmos.
with all due respect to Flores (he very well could be better than any Timber) but that Turf is not a good judge of anyone's talent on the pitch that night lol. Awful awful turf there. I saw bald spots when I was there. But you could be right on the media hyping that was going on.
Fair enough, it did look pretty bad. The drainage looked almost non-existent. The commentators said that Seattle was watering the pitch before match. They would have know that rain was coming, but still chose to water. Such a negative tactic, that only promotes hoofball. Seemed a strange decision given that Portland looked better at that style of play.
