He failed to provide any quote from a scout about Yi.

Uh, one quoted scout says he has "non-existent instincts".

Of greater import, you've gotta love this quote:

How rare is it to see Blazer-love in a non-Blazer-related east-coast article?

One quoted anonymous scout. It's not exactly scientific proof.

Everyone thinks I'm the best poster here. "barfo is the best that ever was", said one poster.

Are you convinced? Or do you think maybe I could have made up that anonymous quote to fit my storyline? Is it even plausible that I'd know what everyone thinks? Is it plausible that a writer would know what "any NBA scout" would tell you?

Yi scored 22 in a win over the Knicks last night. He's averaging 22.5 ppg since he came back from his injury. In other words, he's basically scoring at the same rate as Brandon Roy.

    Garbage? I think not.

If the argument was "you couldn't provide a single quote from a poster saying Barfo was the best", then I'd agree with you. But once the anonymous barfo-lover (who could be barfo himself?) made the quote, the argument is invalid.

KS said that "He failed to provide any quote from a scout about Yi." There was a quote from a scout provided about Yi. I'm not saying that makes Yi a bust or star; I'm not saying it's good journalism or not. I'm saying that, uh, there was a quote from a scout provided. That's scientific.

he's played well for 4 games in a row. that's a very good thing for yi. maybe he's actually becoming an nba player.

but it's still hard to argue that he wasn't one of the worst players in the league the past two seasons.

Holy crap, I don't envy the coaches in the East, having to chose between Yi and Bargnani for that final All-Star roster spot. They are both so awesomely barely above average this year. Of course, that makes them look all-star worthy compared to their previous seasons in the league.

Dude, Bargnani has improved a lot this year, stats don't say it, but he has, he has started to use the post... ya know what, I'm not arguing with you, it's talking to a wall.

It isn't a "quote from a scout" if a scout didn't actually write or say it. And the only evidence that a scout did write or say that is the word of the author, and the author's credibility is in doubt, since his statement immediately prior to the quote is pretty obviously false.

I agree he's improved a lot. How could he not? He used to suck. Now he's a serviceable starting NBA center.

I've watched him play several times this season. In addition to the improved numbers, he's more aggressive and playing with more confidence. Still, he's a long way from being an all-star. His rebounding is still weak and inconsistent. It's just not historically bad (although it's close, his TRB% is now down to 10.5), like it was during his first three years in the league.

Until last night, he was also regressing to the norm. He got off to a really good start and was averaging 21 PPG and had a PER of 21 early in the season. He recently went through a 10 game stretch were he failed to score more than 17 points in a game and couldn't seem to make a 3-pointer if his life depended on it. His PER and scoring average both dipped below 16, but he's pulled them both up over the last three games.

I didn't mean my comments as a bash on Bargnani. I was just trying to point out the ridiculousness of the OPs assertion that Yi is now all-star material. It takes more than short term improvement (five games in Yi's case, a third of a season in Bargnani's) to qualify a player as all-star worthy - especially when that player has been an underachiever for the rest of their NBA career.

No probs. I have a history of being critical of Bargnani. So, it's understandable you would take my latest comments in the same way.

He's definitely shown in improvement this season (it actually started late last season -as I'm sure you are well aware). He's now a much more effective offensive player - not just a one-dimensional perimeter shooter. His defense and rebounding have both improved slightly, but still have a long way to go. He's still quite young and if he can just improve those two areas modestly, it will make him a much better player. In fact, that's always been my biggest criticism of Bargnani. I like my bigs to rebound and play defense.

The statement immediately prior to the quote is, "Any NBA scout will tell you that Yi has poor instincts." Why do you say that is "pretty obviously false"? Further, quotes from scouts are almost always anonymous, so any link to a quote from a scout will likely be similarly unsubstantiated.

Do you think this guy has access to every NBA scout, and has polled them all about this, and that every NBA scout agrees (on this or anything else?).

Plus, no NBA scout will tell me anything, so they certainly won't tell me that.

So you're using semantics to undermine credibility? Interesting approach.
