is this for in-game dunks? If so, Kobe would be on top of my list. If not, he wouldn't even be in the top 10.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting JWohl:</div><div class="quote_post">why does how early he dunked have to do with how good a dunker he is? He is the most overrated dunker of all time</div> clearly you did not watch sportscentre or any raptor games in his first 4 seasons...Those dunks are enough to classify him as the best dunker ever, he's done some pretty amazing dunks since too...outside NBA games (practice/overseas/charity games) and in NBA games too (obviously)...
I haven't seen many dunkers such as Dr. J etc... from what I have seen it goes like this: 1).Vince 2).MJ 3).Kobe 4).Nique 5).Q-Rich

Please, for a second forget historical significance and judge them for thier dunks rather then who started what dunks, the question should be: who do you think would be the better dunker in thier primes? For this I must break out two lists: Best In-Game Dunkers Of All Time 1. Vince Carter [undoubtedly, if you have seen his first 2-4 seasons in this league then you wouldn't even doubt it] 2. Michael Jordan [I have the Ultimate Jordan DVD and the stuff he used to do in games is simply amazing, there was one dunk where he split the defnders, put it behind his back and dunked straight on someone, I think Michael Cage] 3. Kobe Bryant [behind the back 180 anyone?] 4. J-Rich [he tries some pretty bold stuff in games but I think he does that 360 of his too often nowadays, but he's still exciting] 5. This is an open spot for a number of dunkers. I did not grow up watching Nique specifically so I'm not sure what type of an in game dunker he is but many of the highlights I have seen of him are strictly slam dunk contest related, except for some of his double pump windmills and "out of nowhere" putbacks. Me, personally, I would put Desmond Mason in this, I think some of the dunks he pulls are are breathtaking. Best Dunkers Of All Time PERIOD. [In and Out of games] 1. Vince [forget how he is now, even though he started dunking and study the dunks he used to pull off in his first 3-4 years ESPECIALLY the first 2 years. You know how hyped Lebron is right now? That's the kind of publicity Carter carried in 99-00. How times have changed. My personal favourite dunk from him would be the one where he crosses over John Celestand [and I'm talking a REAL crossover, the guy fully went the wrong direction] and tommahawked it. He combined grace, power, finnesse as well hang time. 2. Michael Jordan- Slam Dunk contests speak for itself. His in game dunks speak for itself. I don't think he had quite the versatility that Carter had because most of his dunks have relied on hang time but he hasn't really done anything EXTREME [360's, 360 windmills], he was more of a straight on dunker. 3. Domqinue Wilkins- His dunk contest performances are simply amazing and I can just imagine him bursting on the scene with his dunks back in the 80's giving people things they had never seen before, just like Vince did with my generation [I was 10 at the time]. I guess the way I felt about Vince's performance is the same way many of you old timers feel about Nique's. 4. Spud Webb- I can't believe he's not on people's lists, have you seen the dunks this guy has pulled off? 5. Jason Richardson/Desmond Mason/Josh Smith I know Dr.J started the whole revolution and everything but unfortunetly there wasn't a lot of SPECTACULAR dunks done in his day, and that's real. Tommohawks are common now but they weren't then, so maybe that's why people thought it was really great but I cant call him a better dunker then Josh Smith and such because I haven't really seen him do something that Mason, Rich or Smith couldn't do. If anyone put him on thier list, I believe it was just to show a sign of respect. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> He is the most overrated dunker of all time </div> That gave me a good laugh for a while. Go see some of the dunks he pulled off in his first 3 years in the league then we'll talk. Yes, I really believe dunking over a 7'2 dude is overrated. Or how about putting it thru your legs? Or perhaps dunking it over Mutombo fully? Or wait, what about dunking on Duncan? They must be overrated because no one in the league can ever touch Michael Jordan's dunks. Don't be saying ridiculous statements if you can't back them up.
The thing is, I don't think Vince can dunk like that anymore. Don't get me wrong - he still pulls of amazing dunks, but not like the ones he used to do when he was with TO.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting raptors4life:</div><div class="quote_post">The thing is, I don't think Vince can dunk like that anymore. Don't get me wrong - he still pulls of amazing dunks, but not like the ones he used to do when he was with TO.</div> No... How'd you figure that out?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting piMP3:</div><div class="quote_post">No... How'd you figure that out?</div> Hmm...I dunno...maybe because Nets fans get a little too excited when he dunks? I've even seen people saying his dunks as a Net are better than the ones with the Raptors. THat's bull.
My top most under rated dunkers, some of them are assuming they don't have to be in the NBA: 1. Larry Nance- The skinny as a rag doll pwer forward had some of the best big man ups. He was once booed in the Dunk Contest for getting his chin above the rim and dunking it. He has a list of amazing dunks including the fore-moentioned dunk, dunking with two hands reverse, throwing it off the backboard, and others. He was a great one. 2. Connie Hawkins- It's a shame the league didn't see his best. They were to rapped up He only got to play seven seasons towards the end of his career. He was a New York playground legend growing up, and had kids lining up to catch a glimpse of "The Hawk". Connie had been dunking since he was 11. He would attend Iowa University where he would never play a game, because of a gambling contrevorsy. He joined the Globetrotters and showed off his amazing leaping ability there with an array of dunks. When proven innocent Hawkins' ban from the NBA was removed, and he still showed signs of his once, "god-like leaping ability." 3. Ronnie Fields- ROnnie "King of Hops" Fields will always be known for what could have been. KG's former high school teammate at Farragut Academy was considered by some select few to be better than his team mate had an extraordinary leaping ability-50 inches-. HE had planned on going to the NBA until a horrific car accident shortly crippled him. He would play some seasons with the CBA, and various dunking teams.
Ronnie Fields? Great dunker/legend but I don't know if he belongs on any top five lists. Plus anyone that is rumored to have a 50 inch vert usually doesn't. I'm seeing a lot of horrible lists and a lot of people being left out (namely Shawn Kemp). Dunking isn't just about hanging in the air and looking pretty. There is a nastyness to it. Shawn Kemp made it look pretty AND he was nasty with the way he would dunk on people.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting LiQz:</div><div class="quote_post">1) Vince Carter 2) Dominique Wilkins 3) Micheal Jordan 4) Dr J 5) Chris Anderson </div> *bursts out laughing* Oh my. I'm sorry, but that guy is a terrible dunker. how the hell he got into the dunk contest i dont even know. andre iguoduala should have replaced him
1. Vince Carter 2. Dominique Wilkins 3. MJ 4. Darryl Dawkins - why isn't he on anyone's list? he's a powerful dunker. plus he names his dunks. 5. J-Rich
In no particular order, 1) Vince Carter 2) Dominique Wilkens 3) Jason Richardson 4) Spudd Webb 5) Dr J
I think big men and smaller men need their dunks to be classified and rated separately. I mean no 6'10-6'11 245 lb player is going to be dunking like VC or Jrich. They're too quick. Even that 6'10 high schooler, Josh McRoberts, who does those 360's or between the leg dunks doesn't look as cool as the smaller guys who are quicker and have to elevate more in order to dunk it.
MAN WHERES CLYDE THE GLIDE DREXLER ON YA LISTS Jordan Dr J Domineqe Wilkens Clyde Drexler Vince Carter WHY HAVE ANYONE ELSE MAN
