Man the ego and the hubris of Olshey telling sports writers that they aren't allowed to ponder the details and ramifications of player contracts, salary cap implications, or any other issue without his permission. I'm not an Olshey hater as far as his roster moves, but this kind of bullshit attitude gets me pretty close.
Imagine there's no salary cap, It's easy if you try, No lux tax or CBA crap, Get the best players you can buy...
Interesting theory there...Like Olshey, no GMs in small markets ever, ever make trades. While being forced at gunpoint to accept the league's 3rd-highest payroll. This goes on year after year after year. Defended on the board only by 3 or 4 personal friends, assuming they aren't his employees.
I’m completely fine with that. I already said it months ago that it was a pointless asset, if someone is willing to give you a player for nothing it’s because they don’t think he is that good for them and he’s making too much. It’s hard to combine TPE with other assets because you cannot trade it with players so you essentially must get someone for free, as long as you don’t combine it with picks or make some sort of a more complex trade which consists of multiple trades which is usually difficult. If we were below tax we would have probably made a move but in current situation it would have been wrong choice to use it on someone like Kenneth Faried, Courtney Lee or Jared Dudley which is the level of player we would have got.
Common misconception. You can't aggregate it with other salaries to match a higher one, but you can use a TPE to trade lower salary players for one that fits in the TPE. For example, If Milwaukee had been interested in Collins for Middleton, the TPE would have facilitated such a deal. It didn't necessarily have to be a something for nothing situation.
Shh! It’s a ploy. I’m just biding my time, spreading disinformation until I can mount a coup d’etat and resume my rightful place as the gratest Blazers GM of all time. Signed, e-blazer (AKA Bob, I’m no chemistry major, Whitsitt).
