the same reason Horford opted out of 30m before he went to Philly. Smaller AAV but more guaranteed money long term.

Yeah, but if he signs a 4-year contract at 25 million he is guaranteed to make another 65 million. He needs to assume that he might get injured again....maybe even this season.

This is a bit different scenario.

Horford opted out of a $30M contract to sign one starting at $28M. He gave up $2M for the security. Horford is also a few years older than Hayward, so he knows this was likely his last 'big' contract.

Hayward would be opting out of at $34M contract to sign one at $25M? Giving up $9M.... much less likely.

It still doesn't change the fact that Portland doesn't have the matching salaries to get Hayward without including CJ.

he’s not “giving up $9m.” He’s giving up $34m guaranteed for somewhere around $100m guaranteed; an offer that most likely won’t be there next year if he gets hurt again.

Whiteside could go to a third team like NY with a pick. We saw Detroit take on Ariza salary while swapping picks.

Don't think it's likely we get Hayward for Whiteside, but I think its more likely than Neil trading CJ.

Is mannix stupid? Like Hayward would ever agree to that. Buuuut if Boston is willing to tale Drummond, they should be willing to take Whiteside lol

He has a player option. He’s not gonna opt in if they’re planning to trade him to Cleveland.

was under the impression he did that already. nvm

Yeah Hayward would be amazing acquisition for us.

Whiteside may have to go to a third team, I don't know Boston would want him.

Maybe restructure the Ariza trade... send Ariza to Boston and Whiteside to Detroit with some more draft picks going out.

Can we can restructure the Ariza trade. Didn't Houston already move Ariza and the pick to Detroit?

I don't believe the trades going on 20/21 books are officially completed until next week... even after free agent verbal agreements.

We'd possibly have to get Houston to also agree to restructure it. Seems like sending them $200k cash would be enough.

Often deals get agreed to preliminary by teams/players then the tweak them for the final version to add more teams or players if all parties agree to.

Would love to add Hayward in a S&T, but seems unlikely/wishful thinking.
I can't remember if I speculated here on Hayward thinking, that he likely has an offer from Atlanta, but would prefer to go elsewhere. So his hope is convincing Boston to do S&T, with the leverage of walking to Atlanta.
If we did a double sign and trade, with , like, hood to NY, Whiteside to Boston, each getting decent amount in year 1. And Hayward here. Maybe we agree to take Kanter into the tpe as compensation.

How good is Hayward at this point? I really haven't watched him much in Boston lately.

He put up 17/7/4 last year, shooting 38% from 3. Still pretty good

He's been somewhat marginalized playing with Tatum, Brown, and Kemba, but his advanced numbers we're pretty solid.

CJ to Boston in a sign and trade of Hayward and Boston sends over a 2021 first rounder. I'm pretty sure that Hayward fits under the label of "can create his own shot", he's only a year older than CJ, he's a helluva lot better than CJ on defense and we get a pick because Boston is just facilitating the sign and trade so that's hardly worth CJ. So we're trading CJ for the facilitation and a first rounder in a deep draft.
