Cool, a guy sprains his foot and now he is worthless. He is probably reading this board or some other board to see what people are saying about him. If he is I hope he reads this........ If he had that injury that looked like a sprain to most people and instead had a broken foot and was out for the year THEN I could see the reason to panic. He is a big dude and rolled his foot in a bad way and he is only out a couple weeks or a bit more. Just like what would have happened to any other player. THAT is normal. Not injury prone. The game probably seemed like a blur, it was his first game and the year of rehab must have seemed like it took forever. It seemed that way to me.
Other GM's would lowball you guys, exaggerate the risk, emphasize the uncertainty, and then cherish their new acquisition once they traded for him.
I think he's going to be more valuable than most of the offers. Pritch wouldn't even consider it. I still firmly believe Oden - Roy - Aldridge is the cornerstone for championship contention. Nothing has changed. Trading Oden, or "moving on" is foolish.
Let me just see if I understand you correctly. You say Tyson looked like he had superstar potential his 2nd year in the league, yet that clearly hasn't happened, yet you're willing to claim that Derrick Rose looks like a superstar after he's played in one game... And both Durant and Oden aren't going to be based on their opening poor performances, even though Durant was rookie of the year. Do you not see how hypocritcal you're being? If you're basing your opinion of Greg solely on last night then you don't really deserve an opinion on the matter since you haven't watched him enough. Most people are going to be bad when they have to play on a sprain. Greg had several instances during the preseason where he showed why he is so highly regarded by those who know what they're talking about. Obviously he's injury prone, and because of that he might never realize his potential, but the talent is there. The bottom line is it's too early (by years) to come to any conclusion about any of these players reaching superstar status. What a homer.
It'll depend. Some GM might want to take a risk on Oden. It's like the old water balloon toss game. Get $10,000 if you land it, but lose $50 if you miss. The distance is set at 50 feet. You have to throw the waterballoon to your partner form that distance, have him catch it and not pop it. Doable, yes, but a big risk in doing that.
I had serious doubts about Oden being a superstar at draft time. A year of injuries...and a new year started with more injuries isn't doing much for him to help his case to me. Still possible, but I dont' see him (or Durant, based what I saw last year from him) becoming the elite level superstars. Maybe they become allstar level players. Maybe have an Elton Brand impact for a team, but they look very unlikely to be one of the NBA's elite players.
So what's your alternative? Should the team (and the fans) just sit on their thumbs and hope Greg someday arrives to save us? Should one guy be allowed to hold the entire franchise hostage?
Yeah, you already made your opinion very clear, I guess you completely glossed over everything I said in my previous post..
He's not holding anyone hostage. Pritch is builidng a good, balanced team. Oden is 20 years old and we have all the flexibility on earth. This team is not centered around Oden, although he has the biggest chance to greatly increase our championship odds. Tell me how Oden is "holding the entire franchise hostage"? That is bunk. He's 20 years old on a rookie contract. Legit low post defensive and offensive threat, commands double and triple teams. We don't have to "move on" from Oden. It sucks that he's injured but the things I see are rediculous.
Trading him for pennies on the dollar is ridiculous. "Moving on" is exactly what the team did last season, and I see nothing ridiculous about it. If Greg comes back and contributes, great. If Greg someday becomes the best player on the team, good for him. Until then, this is Roy's and LMA's team.
again, we are continuing to build. Its not like we're not getting more talent and trying to figure out chemistry. greg is part of this team.
Not right now he isn't. All people are saying is that you have to move on and play with the team you have, and I think the players and coaches would agree. Cashing it in until Greg returns is the last thing you want to do. Besides the obvious reasons, even when he comes back there's no gaurantee that he'll be back for long. There's always the reasonable possibility that Greg will come back and finish out the year playing well and being a big part of any success we might have, but for now it's wrong to assume that that will happen, given his past. I hope we'll be able to look back and mock posters like me for thinking he's injury prone, but right now to say otherwise strikes me as... funny. Oden still has incredible upside and a rookie contract, and a lot of time to come back and play well. When people say we need to move on, I take that to mean we need to be realistic about our current situation, not that we should trade him and toss him aside.
this is a minor ankle injury that happened within the flow of the game. nothing changes for the long-term future as far as Oden is concerned. Roy-Oden-Aldridge are the future. Roy-Aldridge are the present. Add Webster and Rudy and Bayless, etc and we still have a great team with a great future. I'm not worried. just pissed.
Webster's option has yet to be picked up by the team. Barring a break-out season, he's going to be a RFA, and if somebody pays him, he's gone.
I personally think Webster will be an integral part of this team. He adds so much, and is getting better. Again, injured...but he should be good to go too. We have money.
It doesn't matter. At this point, it is clear the team is willing to let others bid on him and then decide if he is worth matching. It's make or break time for Martell in Portland, and if the team viewed him as "integral", he would already be extended outside of his rookie contract.
He should be locked up now for cheap IMO. Just like what we did with Outlaw.....his value is low, and he owes us for sucking early on.
