So Portland traded for Varejo, immediately waived him and then added Brian (don't call me Bip) Roberts. In addition, the Blazers receive CLE 2018 1st round Draft pick (Top-10 protected) and a future 2nd round pick from MIA. Also, it is being reported the Blazers will get cash considerations from CLE and ORL from the Varejo trade. Portland waived Tim Frazier to complete the Varejo trade but will use the 'Stretch Provision' to lessen the impact of his contract for next season which will then count for only around $2Million each season until that provision is exhausted. So: 2018 1st Round pick (Top-10 protected) from Cleveland A future 2nd round pick from Miami Cash considerations from CLE and ORL Brian Roberts to fill the Tim Frazier slot .....and for all that, Portland gave up a reported future 2nd round pick to ORL. Certainly not a 'needle-mover' but all in all, POR got back more than it sent out.
Isn't the second rounder to Orlando coming from Cleveland ? From when we traded seconds to Cleveland for crabbe?
So future assets especially as this team continues to grow. Cap flexibility wasn't really hurt and it certainly didn't impact the current rotation one bit. Seems like a Win-Win.
We traded our cap space now, some of it the next five off seasons, and Frazier. I give these moves an C+.
We have a Tim Frazier appreciation thread. This should really be the "Neil Olshey Appreciation Thread." He's done nothing but impress me with every move he's made.
wow, less than 2% of our capspace for a future 1st, a 2nd, and a solid backup PG and save like 6 mil getting close to the salary floor, that's a nice day's work by NO
Did we trade our cap space now? Or did we simply reach the salary cap floor which we were required to do anyways? Would we be in the same boat salary cap wise if we simply paid our current roster more money to reach the floor?
What I like is Neil has superior shot selection, to use a player term. He pulls the trigger on moves, but they're measured and considered. We've had GMs who make no moves at all, and GMs who flail around hoping something will stick. I like Neil's approach the best.
Wow Neil! That's some voodoo shit right there. I don't follow trades or cap spaces or any of that hocus pocus. But if Neil made it work for as little as possible on our part, then I can't complain.
In comparison, look at what Philly did with their cap space. Spent a little more, but got Strauskas, the lottery chances of the Kings for the next two years, and the Kings pick in 2018 that has very small protection. With the train wreck in Sacramento, that pick has very good chance of being in the lottery. The first rounder from Cleveland plus the other picks we acquired are decent though.
Sounds like we don't have to decide on stretching Varejao until the summer. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insi...valiers-trade-orlando-magic-channing-frye-nba
