When a team has Judge, they don't need Stanton and his huge salary. On of the primary trade objectives should be to get Ellsbury gone.

Cashman made a bunch of deals today opening up 6 spots on the 40 man roster for better prospects and jettisoning lesser ones that don’t hav a future here.

Yanks' trade brings Ohtani funds to $3.5 million
The Yankees raised their available signing bonus money for Japanese star Shohei Ohtani to $3.5 million, acquiring $250,000 in pool money from the Miami Marlins on Monday for left-hander Caleb Smith and first baseman Garrett Cooper.

The New York Yankees added INFs Gleyber Torres and Thairo Estrada, RHPs Albert Abreu, Domingo Acevedo and Jonathan Loaisiga, and OF Billy McKinney to the team's 40-man roster on Monday.

crosses fingers that Byrd can play a full season. I thought Cooper did a very good job last year.

He did al. But we still have austin and headley that can play first and hopefully the bird man is all healed up now. Cooper has talent but wasn't worth sacrificing a younger prospect for.

...personally, though he appears to be a good young talent, I do have some reservations concerning Otani.

He's young, cheap, throws 102mph and can hit. Whats not to like?

    ...didn't say I didn't like him.

    1. there are many more cases than not, where Asian pitchers did not live up to the hype or developed arm problems and did not fare nearly as well in MLB as hoped. (the Yanx have experienced this multiple times)

    2. he may peak at 102 but that's nowhere near his average FB...and as we know, velocity without command/location is not a formula for success...and he's yet to go up against MLB hitting.

    3. he may hit OK for a youngster in Japan but it's not like he's tearing the cover off the ball and is hardly dominating Japanese pitching, much less MLB pitching.

    4. as far as pitching, if the Yanx sign Otani where will they place him in the rotation?...and what about resigning CC?...and what about
Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, Domingo Acevedo, Albert Abreu.

    5. as mentioned, most Asian players don't transition to MLB as hoped and Otani has not yet shown that he can pitch in the range of 200 innings or so a year.

...look, I'm not saying that Otani is not "a young talent" because he is, "but at this point, that's all he is and again, having said that, "I do have some reservations".

    ^^^^

I am always a bit skeptical when Nippon Lgr's come to play for pay, and most definitely will always have serious reservations... Japanese players have not impressed me as a whole, with exceptions of very few bona fide international stars, ie Ichiro, Matsui, Darvish, Nomo to name a few successes, amongst a bunch of avg joe's or kim's, to lesser extents. If anything Japanese players show they often lack the stamina of a long haul season, a grinding out year. Like 59- said 200IP (?) or more...Darvish tossed >200 IP 1 time. Nomo 4, close to 6....is he a pitcher or a hitter. The great Bambino could do both, but it only makes sense to do what no one else could, and for Ruth we all know it was about power hitting,...what can Otani do that no one else can? Be an effective SP and DH....?? I'd like to see it, but doubt he could pull both off. Those are some Bunyan-Ruthesque shoes to fill...

Over his 5 yrs, he's only played in 403 gms, an avg of 80.6 gms.

big Q, can anyone pitch every 5th day, when used to doing so only once a week, and DH every day (with success) when he's not on a mound....?? the million $$$ Q-! I wish him big luck, but have lesser expectations...

    ^^^^ this ~!~!~!~

couldn't agree more .... 1-5 spot on, bingo, bullseye, kachink of the horse shoe.

I'd love to see Otani turn MLB upside down, a 1 in a Million chance imo. Have to see Vegas odds once signed, if the do post any odds at all....odds of/on what, ???

(I swear Vegas is linked directly to Merlin the Magician's crystal ball)

    ...^^^^^

excellent article: I was totally unaware of Brendan McKay of TB, and Hunter Greene of the Reds.

Good points, and imo, if Ruth couldn't do it, why does anyone think a Nippon Lgr can-?? Not that Ruth couldn't do it, IT, just doesn't make much sense, having one's cake and eat it too, or leader in ERA and OPS....

    great comic relief included too-

"You become the bird in the hand, which, we all know, is worth two in the bush.
But life's gambles are rarely as simple as that.
How many in the bush would it take to make you give up on the one in the hand? Is a bird in the hand worth three in the bush? Is it worth six in the bush? What if the one in your hand is not really in your hand, just closer to your hand than the one in the bush? Is a bird in a bush worth two in a tree? Is two-thirds of a bird in the hand worth 1.8 birds in the bush? The proverb doesn't address the uncertain probabilities of baseball, one of humankind's least predictable endeavors." :nerd: :roflmao:

many xlnt points: (to cite- but a couple, out of a few)
1- "We do know, by the second month of that season, his manager noted that "just from watching him bat, you can see some fatigue." We do also know that at the All-Star break of that season he was batting .310; he ended the season with a .238 batting average, which suggests that exhaustion might have been a factor. We also know that the Nippon-Ham Fighters almost never used him in the outfield again."

2- "Every pitch he sees could break his wrist, every sprint to first could lead to a hamstring strain, and every slide could lead to a jammed thumb. Otani's NPB debut on the mound actually was delayed by weeks because he sprained his ankle -- though it was while he was playing in the outfield, not hitting. He missed the World Baseball Classic this spring with an ankle injury he aggravated while running the bases. And he has missed the past two months because of a thigh injury he suffered while running to first."
