CJ won't be able to restructure. That can't happen till after the 3rd anniversary of his extension and he only signed a 3 year deal, and that begins next season

Dame can restructure, but not until 2024-25. However, the CBA prohibits players from re-working their contracts to create more space for the team. A renegotiation can only be for a salary increase

I agree that we can't let Trent walk but I've been so solidly in the trade CJ camp for years now that my opinion doesn't hold a lot of weight around here. As far as NBA players restructuring their contracts, that's without precedent and the NBAPA that CJ is VP of would go ape shit because then teams would ask that a lot like they do in the NFL. No player should give up guaranteed money with this labor situation. Nurk still has a year left on his deal and that year is at 12M. In fact if DJ opts in and we get Gary at 15M we will be at 134M with 5 roster spots open... and that means letting Collins walk, cutting Hood and letting Kanter walk. If we keep those guys (assuming Kanter will stay for 5M and Zach takes his QO) we're 157M with two roster spots left. If they're both minimum contracts and one of them is Melo then we're at 160M.

Looking at this season because the cap isn't likely to go up more than two million dollars that will give us the third highest payroll in the league for a team that the don't fire Stotts crowd says isn't fair to expect a coach to compete for a championship with. That hardly screams the fiscal responsibility that the team seems to be committed to lately.

the big issue in re-signing Trent would be the repeater tax. But that threat would be down the road a ways, assuming Portland stays out of the tax this season

the CBA repeater rule is that a team pays repeater tax if it was a taxpayer in 3 of the 4 previous seasons. Portland's current calendar:

    2017-18: no tax (Blazers were $735 dollars under...yes, $735)
    2018-19: paid tax
    2019-20: paid tax

    2020-21: no tax (assumption)

so then, for next season, those 4 seasons right there would be the repeater gauge, and even if Portland was over the tax line next season, they wouldn't pay repeater tax. But the following season, they'd be liable for repeater if they were taxpayers again. But they would have till the trade deadline in 2022-23 to reduce payroll enough to dodge the tax

so Portland does have major incentive to stay under the tax line this season. I'm pretty sure they will do that, just so they have that extra year's margin

of course, it could be that Olshey has orders out of Seattle to stay out of the tax altogether. That wouldn't surprise me at all. If that's true, there could be some hard choices in the GM's office because over the next 15 months because all of these players will be signing new contracts somewhere: Nurkic, Covington, Hood, Jones, Zach, Kanter, Simons, Trent, Melo, and Giles. 10 players. This summer it could be that Hood, Jones, Zach, Trent, Melo, and Giles are all free agents. And if there is a no-tax edict out of Seattle, it will be a scramble

More likely Olshey will trade Trent that's his past history with all his 2nd rounders. If Hood don't get together here soon I think he will be gone too.
