i-5 runs from Mexico to Canada, asking shippers to only drive thru Portland during off-peak hours is ridiculous.
Hmm. What do they do when they get to Seattle or LA? I don't think PDX is the only rush hour choke point on the freeway. barfo
Do you have any idea what it would cost in dental work to make a Vantucky girl as desirable as a LA girl? It would be cheaper to just build the bridge.
Well it would depend on what the toll was... at some level of purchase, it would be cheaper to pay the tolls than the taxes in WA. Obviously you wouldn't want to drive over to buy a bag of chips, but to buy a TV? Definitely still cheaper on the OR side. barfo
Why does everyone want to make it about me? I wasn't talking specifically about me, I was referring to Washington residents who would refuse to spend in Oregon purely because of principle and protest of the tolls.
??? I wasn't making it about you. The economic tradeoff between tolls and taxes isn't specific to you. I did say 'you', but I meant 'a vancouver resident'. barfo
So, probably every job that is lost in Oregon due to tolls would be added in WA. People are still going to buy the same amount of stuff, just in a different place. And adding jobs in WA is not a bad thing, fewer trips across the bridge means less gridlock, less pollution, etc. Of course it would hurt the OR economy to lose retailers, if we actually did - but in a more global view it is a good thing to have people buy groceries and such close to home. barfo
Would we really lose much? I bet most of the shoppers and employees at the shops just across the border are from Washington.
Costco off airport way would probably be pissed. That place has more Washingtonians than Oregonians. Tax cheats!
Dude come on, if you could save 7.7% you would drive to Vancouver. The accountant in you would demand it.
