Of course you would. I would too, if someone I cared about was murdered, and I'm against the death penalty. That's why we don't and shouldn't let the family of the victim set the penalty--none of us are robots who can examine ethics, the flaws in our justice system, etc, dispassionately when someone we love was harmed. Emotion takes over and the desire for vengeance. I don't think a desire for vengeance is a good way to determine punishment in our society.

 

I don't find justice in letting a serial killer get a college degree...free medical and dental...free tv and shelter...a gym to lift weights and a million dollars for a book deal or movie rights because he committed horrible crimes....and keep them there on my tax dollar for decades...I think it has to be a murder beyond any reasonable doubt for the death penalty...there should be no question as to guilt but I don't believe the taking of an innocent life constitutes becoming a lifetime prisoner.

No, I'm saying we shouldn't be ruled by the primal fear and anger that animates MAGA types. We also shouldn't be ruled by the type of racism endemic to Trump and his supporters.

It doesn't take dispassionate robots to avoid that fate. Most normal humans can manage it.

 

99% of death penalties are because of an illogical desire for vengeance. Life in prison accomplishes the important aspect without squeezing the life out of someone. And I'm only interested in life in prison for those who can't be reformed.
