I would think he’s a douche in the back of my mind and that’s as far as it would go. I wouldn’t be calling for his job or his incarceration. I’m not that petty. I don’t need others silenced to aid in augmenting my own views. That’s, um, fascist.

literally took me 5 seconds to find those tweets...below the original one. Not hard to actually research things you know.

Those statutes are a very loose attribution to a cop wearing a campaign mask. He wasn’t actively campaigning and it’s pretty hard to view a cop wearing a gun as any extra sort of intimidation when you consider ALL cops wear guns when on duty. I will admit it is in bad taste, and unprofessional. But I just don’t see those laws applying in this case. There was no specific threat or coercion taking place where the officers status was used as leverage against a voter.

So the local police code of conduct probably looks down on this, and that’s even pretty questionable. Fair enough. Reprimand him accordingly for bending the in-house rules. Firing still seems excessive.

There is nothing even remotely concrete, even in your “proof” tweets, to suggest it’s illegal and legal action should be taken.

I'll walk back the "highly illegal" statement. Still against county and departmental policy. Other people do get fired from the normal jobs for breaking policy publicly.

    Fair enough.

“Passive electioneering” as per the article you shared, which as you said, isn’t illegal. At least not in Florida anyway.

I will say, I kind of despise how the Washington Post presents this article and dances around the legality issue. They kept veering off and mentioning “some states” where things like it are illegal but refused to outright address this instance. Many people would walk away from that article still unsure. That’s just the media I guess.

I agree. You had to dance around the wording in the article. Passive electioneering is legal in Florida, but this guy was clearly breaking the rules of his department and is not allowed to display political messages while on duty or in uniform.

So, I'm not calling for him to die, or be arrested, or anything. Reprimanded, and the state, county, and department should send a CLEAR message that that behavior will not be tolerated from officers.

I had to re-read about the incident because I remembered, specifically, that it was not actually a violation of law, but a violation of department policy. But then, it's Florida

I was thinking, and still am, that there is so much (too much) gray area in conduct at polling stations that it just sets up situations like this.

it should be that any government official (including poll workers) at polling stations should be prohibited from wearing anything promoting a candidate or measure. That should be doubly so for a police officer allowed to carry a gun into a polling station

all that said, if it wasn't for the fact that we're all on hair triggers about bullshit associated with voting, this incident is getting way more attention than it deserves. That officer went over a line for sure, but it was a pretty minor offense

OSEA policy will not allow teachers or staff to wear campaign buttons, hats, slogans, etc while on school grounds...teachers according to the guidelines of the union are to appear apolitical during school hours or activities and election cycles but only on school grounds...you can put a sticker on your car in the parking lot but not wear a button or hat, etc on your person....those rules have been in place for ages...nothing new. If a teacher broke that rule they'd be suspended without pay.

Hillary was just about the worst choice the D's could have made in 2016 (except for Bernie), but she looks like Nostradamus with this one:
