WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 1.1 million Georgians have voted in twin U.S. Senate runoff elections that will determine which party controls that chamber of Congress, and with it the fate of much of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s agenda, state data showed on Friday.

The surge in turnout after four days of early in-person voting, and about four weeks of mail-in voting, showed that voter participation in the two races is on pace to rival the records set in the November presidential contest in which Biden defeated Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

State data published on Friday showed the number of accepted ballots was just below the level seen at the same point in early voting for November’s election.

Voting in the Senate runoffs, which are taking place because no candidate won 50% support on Nov. 3, ends on Jan. 5.

This is a really good sign. High voter turn out, we know who that favors

    I'm not so sure

it was high voter turnout before and there was lots of anti-trump votes. Purdue beat Osoff. I don't believe Georgia is as blue as the D's believe...not yet anyway.

you gotta believe sometimes man. You were saying the same things during the election. Wisconsin wouldn’t turn blue, Michigan, etc.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
High voter turnout is hard to analyze right now. In general, higher voter turnout is good for Democrats. That didn't go so well down ballot in November, but that election had Trump on the ticket. We all assumed Trump was a detriment to Republicans but now I'm not so sure--especially in red states, Trump is probably the Republicans' best drawing card for the ultra-conservative types. I think Georgia is still slightly red--I think Georgia might flip back to Republicans at the Presidential level in 2024.

But Trump drove high voter turnout, both among conservatives and Democrats. I didn't use "Republicans" there on purpose--I think Trump specifically appeals to self-described conservatives, as opposed to all Republicans, many of whom consider themselves "moderates." If turnout is high without Trump, that might be more Democratic, as conservatives may be demoralized by Trump's "loss" (as many of them are skeptical of it). Republicans without the hardcore conservative set would be at a major disadvantage.

Of course, this is all without any idea of the polling because I don't know how much I trust polling this cycle. Despite everything I just said, it wouldn't shock me to see Republicans win both Senate races. But I think high turnout sans Trump is a bullish sign for Democrats.

I think Democrats won the race for voter registration in the Presidential election. Hopefully there will be carryover.
