I'm guessing he knew he didn't have the cardio to go 5 rounds with Velazquez, so the plan was to physically overwhelm him in the first round or two. Get it over early so the cardio never came into play.

It probably was the smart strategy, but Lesnar just got too wild with it (and let's face it--Cain just fucking hits really hard).

I don't see how they schedule a re-match any time soon. What would Lesnar do differently? Take his time and try to win in a later round? I don't see it going any better for him that way.

Lesnar's got to go and beat on some other heavyweights for a while and really work on his boxing. If he faces a nimble opponent he can't just bullrush who can also hit hard, he's in trouble.

Anyway, I'm a huge Velazquez believer at this point. I think Brock goes out and fights to or three other guys and probably dominates them, and Velazquez destroys all comers. And Cain gets the recognition he really deserves. It's not that Brock was bad, it was that Cain was so good.

Gilbert Yvel got knocked out by Jon Madsen in the first round. That is a huge embarrassment and it pushes his UFC record to 0-3. Forget pink slips, the UFC might just float him on a raft into the Pacific.

Kenny Florian made an interesting comment tonight on MMA Live (BTW this show aint bad, thought it would be terrible considering its on ESPN) that after the Carwin fight Brock said he was unhappy with how he started slow. Maybe that had to do with the explosive start.

Don't know about Cain destroying all comers. I love Cain but Dos Santos is fuggin dirty standing up. Seems like the roles will flip in the next heavyweight title match- Cain needs to wrestle JDS and JDS needs to stuff the takedown and keep it standing. Even if it does go to the ground Cain will have to be careful with JDS' jiu jitsu. Its a 5 round fight- all the more time for JDS to find ways to get up and more opportunities to land a big blow and all the more time to him to find an opening and sink in a submission. As for other guys who can compete with Cain; if Carwin's performance is unaffected after the steroid controversy hes always got a punchers chance. Guys like Mir and Nog have the BJJ going for them. Not saying any of them will be the favorite by any means but heavyweight is a pretty unforgiving division and it seems like its getting more and more talented. Its hard to see anyone holding the belt for a ton of defenses like you see with GSP, Anderson, Aldo, etc.

It feels weird thinking about a 245 lber and a 235 lber fighting for the heavyweight title now after we've become so accustomed to these behemoth guys dominating. We all thought these 265 lb freaks were the future but now we're seeing two smaller, quicker, more skilled, higher endurance guys go at it.

As for whats next for Lesnar- maybe Noguiera? Cheick Kongo? Gabriel Gonzaga? Much too soon for another fight with Mir. Putting Crocop in there is seriously endangering his life. Wouldn't mind seeing Lesnar-Big Nog winner fighting Nelson-Carwin winner. I'd watch Lesnar-Carwin II.

Giants fans like to call Jonathan Sanchez "Dirty" because hes got nasty stuff. Didn't really apply tonight lol though he did try to kick Chase Utley's ass.

I was not impressed with JDS fight with Big Country thus methink he'll lose to Cain and it won't even take 5 rounds to decide (3 tops). JDS needs to work on his conditioning if he wants to stay in the octagon with Cain for 5 rounds he was gassing in a 3 round fight against Big Country. Also factor in that Cain has a granite of a chin, I'm sure he'll be abe to "eat" one if he needs to to take JDS down.

Re: UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez [Results]

Dunno if Cain really has a granite chin. I don't recall if Kongo ever rocked him but he had Rothwell on his back the whole fight and Nog obviously isn't going to KO him. Brock got some decent shots tonight but nothing too rough. It helps to have such good conditioning but I don't think hes ever been tested by a striker like Dos Santos. JDS beat the piss out of Nelson like he has with everyone else hes fought in the UFC but I agree that his cardio wasn't that great. Part of that is a major credit to Roy for having a hell of a chin and being a tough bastard. Even aside from being arguably the best striker in the division JDS will probably have the BJJ advantage. Whether the fight is standing or Cain wrestles JDS and puts him on his back the whole fight, JDS will have 5 rounds to catch him.

Yeah, Cain could finish him. At this point its hard to pick a winner out of these two IMO but I seem to like Dos Santos more than most. I love Cain but these guys are both great. Just seems like people are too quick to give it to Cain right now. Cain just whooped Lesnar's ass but it seems safe to say now that hes the much better striker, probably better wrestler, better cardio, and overall better fighter. Lesnar is bigger. That's all I can really give him right now but Cain proved hes probably stronger than that 244 lbs weight would indicate- maybe not as strong as Lesnar but not as far off as most thought. Against JDS he won't be the better striker. He'll be fighting a guy who I am assuming (and assuming is dangerous) to have some jiu jitsu. He'll be fighting a guy who has the quickness advantage. A guy who has more experience than he does. A guy who won't puss out like Lesnar (lol). Its a much different fight against a much more skilled fighter. I won't be surprised if it goes either way and I'd probly still make Cain the favorite based on excellent wrestling. Just defending Dos Santos because dude is a mauler IMO and he can end it quick.

Kampmann did win. He got fucking ripped off.

And I'm glad I was right about Cain winning this fight. I thought it was a long shot, but he tooled Brock.

Yeah I was watching the fight on mute with the Giants game in the background and I was shocked when they raised Shields' arm. I figured I must have not been paying close attention but I could swear Kampmann looked like he was in better position almost the whole fight. And I'm a Shields fan.

Taker fucking rules. I wonder what the hell was that about? At 0:47? Looked like Taker said, "You wanna do it?"

It didn't seem like they were friendly.

Lesnar pretty much looked like Bob Sapp out there vs Cain, charge in looking huge and mean, run when you get punched in the mouth, turtle up and get pounded out/quit.

Wow, heat between the UT and Brock. Didn't know it existed.

Taker is a cool dude and Brock is an ass so it's not really shocking that they wouldn't be BFF's.

As a former wrestling fan I get a little thrill out of seeing these guys hanging around (and praising) MMA these days.

Yeah, I think the game plan on how to beat Brock has been written by Carwin...and executed to perfection by Cain.

You have to be the aggressor with Brock. He does not like getting hit.

Unfortunately I think this is a good comparison after last night. Brock folds under pressure.

As for JDS vs. Cain, I think that is a hell of a fight. Cain's stand-up game is getting better by the day but JDS is a serious boxer. We haven't seen Jr. on his back so I don't know what his BJJ game is like--yeah he trains with good guys but he is a boxer first and foremost.
