Forget fading, Romero is burning up in the atmosphere in the fourth.

Thought he might've been pacing himself in the third. Looks like he was gassing.

I imagine he'll have a brief second wind in the last round.

We're looking at 2-2, fifth round decides everything.

On one leg it looks like Whittaker gutted it out.

I don't think Bisping is going to be able to rattle Whittaker.

It was a very close fight but if the judges say he won, he won.

    Classy Yoel

    Some thoughts...

Jordan Mein is the definition of mediocre. Lots of talent but doesn't make the most of it. Should've stayed retired. I have no reaction to Belal Muhammad winning as he is just average. Even his name is generic despite him wanting us to remember it.

Gerald Meerschaert can take a punch and Marreta Santos can throw one. Low expectations for Santos who is like 90% body/10% talent.

Hope Chad Laprise gets a fat cheque for jumping up in weight to face Brian Camozzi on short notice and stopping him with a gut crushing liver shot.

With all due respect to double-O, Travis Browne is a fucking wasteman.

Rob Font and Douglas Andrade probably couldn't believe their luck going from the dark matches to the PPV. Font is a good fighter and it was a pleasure not to have to listen to Goldy drone on about Mark DellaGrotte.

Anthony Pettis is a frontrunner. He always looks great when he is first off the blocks. His flirtation with featherweight was a mistake and this is a better spot for him. Jimmy Miller is now 4-6 since 2014 and is starting to feel like a mid-level Mike Tyson's Punch-Out opponent, like Soda Popinski. Like a second-tier gatekeeper. Bellator might be a better option for him if he wants to compete for a title.

Curtis Blaydes is 26 and still has room to grow but he appears to be a very workmanlike fighter. I saw someone saying he was an equal prospect to Ngannou which is, especially after tonight, clearly ludicrous. I don't see any outstanding aspects of Blaydes' game. But it is the HW division where two good wins can get you into a title fight. Seems like Blaydes vs. OO is next. Blaydes/Black Beast would also be fun.

TactiReem vs. Werdum was a much duller fight than I think the UFC was hoping for. Reem connected with a couple of counters that stung Werdum in the first two rounds but nothing terribly substantial. The third round was punctuated by Werdum rocking Reem twice and subsequently failing to capitalize, first attempting a guillotine that went nowhere, then taking Reem down and laying in his guard for a minute while Werdum's coaches pulled their hair out. I think the key to fighting Reem is to be aggressive and put pressure on him because he has no faith in his chin and will be on the back foot all night. Unfortunately he was fighting Werdum who went balls out against Miocic and got stretched so he didn't risk following that strategy in full until the last round. Fans were upset that Reem won but probably more so that the fight was bad.

Then Romero attempted to also be patient and tactical in the main event. Against Weidman he was counterattacking and eventually crushed him with a flying knee. He spammed that same flying knee in the first two rounds with Whittaker which, in addition to some mad scrambling and mostly excellent take down defence from Whittaker, resulted in Romero's gas tank running out somewhere between the second and fourth rounds. Whittaker pushed through a leg injury sustained at the bad end of an oblique kick early in the fight, one that Romero claimed he knew about in the post-fight interview. Quick aside-- if a fighter tells his corner on camera that he is injured, what's to stop someone in the crowd or cage side from informing the opposing coaches? These guys need to be more discrete. In any case Whittaker continued his rise, now having defeated two top five middleweights en route to a title fight with Michael Bisping presumably in Australia in November. Thankfully this should put an end to the Bisping-GSP bullshit.

Bisping in the cage after the fight was fine, they do that stuff occasionally, but the fact that Whittaker won really seemed to be a stick in the spokes for Bisping, who accused Whittaker of having a fake belt then (for some reason) threw his own belt down? What? DFW shuffled over and picked it up before Whittaker could claim it. That bit was lost on me. The crowd booed Bisping who clearly wants to be liked but also only has a singular method of selling a fight which is to act like a twat 24/7. I think constantly being written-off and disrespected has given him problems. Whittaker proved himself to be unflappable by fighting through an injury and clearly has no interest in hamming it up with Bisping. The title unification angle should be enough to sell the fight. Actually it would be pretty cool for it to be on at a regular time in Sydney since I think that would mean a late morning-early afternoon PPV here.

The show suffered a little by not having the women's fight. DFW threw Nunes under the UFC bus today saying the doctors cleared her to fight but she refused. Can you imagine Adam Silver talking shit about one of the stars of the NBA? It is baffling that a guy who is ostensibly a promoter is quick to bury the people he's supposed to be selling.

He does, but I don't think the UFC can make a trailer out of Jones being a recidivist steroid cheat cokehead sociopath.

I take back the part of him being a recidivist cokehead, they were more than happy to show that in the trailer, but the steroid cheat and suspension part somehow got left out...

For reals. Werdum should have finished the fight if he wanted it that bad. It's not like Overeem isn't able to be knocked the fuck out.

This event has apparently tanked. Meltzer is reporting that the PPV buy rate was only 130k. Dunno how much the loss of the main event made a difference.
