The new Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance for the UFC is Jeff Novitzky, the famed FDA agent who flipped over the sport of cycling and has investigated the likes of Barry Bonds, Marion Jones, and others. Novitzky was a major source of information for the Mitchell Report into doping in Major League Baseball and has been called a "bulldozer" and the "Elliott Ness" of doping investigations. Novitzky has held up under scrutiny via multiple cross examinations during his work and is generally regarded as being scrupulous and honest.
The UFC have been pretty lax in the last few years under increasing pressure to clean up the sport, relying too much on the Athletic Commissions and not taking matters into their own hands. Year-round random testing for their entire roster should be the norm. With the UFC hiring Novitzky and talking about massively increasing penalties for doping it might be more than lip service for once. Silva's failed test could finally have pushed them in the right direction.
Novitzky will initiate the fighters on the new standards in the coming months in preparation for them going into effect this summer. After that the fighters will have no excuses.
