Isn't BJ Penn also a big influence on the 135 pound weight division and why it's around?

I wasn't really going to comment on this until i read this?
Lombardi? Anyone? The NFL has not only players but coaches and venues that are legendary.
How many legendary Soccer players can you name? Are you saying the most widely played sport in the world has no legends also?

Now as far as Penn getting knocked out. Watch that video. He went down but was getting up pretty quickly. The people involved probably saved him from a ferocious beat down.
The other issue here is the guy he was fighting was quite a bit bigger. Weight and size does matter. Don't care who you are and how bad you are. If you are fighting a bigger guy you better watch out. Yes a smaller guy can win. But the odds are always in the bigger guys favor. Penn was out sized in that fight by quite a bit.

No excuse for a professional fighter to be brawling in the streets. I taught Jiu Jitsu for years to teens. The first thing you teach them is that it's self defense and that it is left for the cage/ring until you absolutely need it outside of the cage/ring. For the most part it is a terrific for cross training and reaching personal goals.

BJ Penn seems to have forgot the basic rules of the game. If he ever knew them in the first place?

Like for instance I work with a bunch of engineers who basically hate sports. They know my MJ references but in terms of football even saying Tom Brady I am returned with Blank stares.

I dont know, Im not sure why I jumped into this conversation other than one poster somewhere up there brought up he had never heard of the guy was he a “legend” and I find sport terminology interesting, what does, “legend”, “Elite”, “Superstar”, etc mean? It means different thing to different people.

I guess I just find the use of the word "legend" to be wrong in my opinion.

    Star? Sure.

But most legends from other sports are household names.... hell.... there are even some UFC fighters who are household names that I have heard of, and I haven't heard of this dude. :dunno:

I'm sure there are plenty of NBA stars who we would consider to be legends but most people have never heard of. Bill Russell was so long ago that it's not really out of the question that someone wouldn't have heard of him. But I don't know why you're turning this into a pissing match about UFC knowledge. My lack of knowledge about the UFC is my entire point about why the guy isn't really a legend. I pay attention to sports. I have heard of and watched UFC fights. I have never heard of the dude. How legendary could he be?

I think there are crossover stars who transcend their own sport like Jennie Finch but I couldn't tell you if she was a legend or not. Seems separate from earned status within the discipline. BJ was one of the first fighters to hold UFC championships in multiple weight classes, he's a Hall of Famer and arguably the GOAT for the lightweight class. He's also a piece of shit.

More legends in the UFC than that. Whether you know of them or not, is irrelevant. :)

And another legend. Man that weight class was soooo good at first. by the time BJ met Penn he was past his prime I think though, no?

How do you define a legend? How many legends are there in NBA history? In NFL history? How do you compare a legend with a star or a superstar? Is Dame a legend? Is Roy a legend? Is someone like Kevin Love a legend?

Well, i certainly wouldn't put the foundational basis on popularity, which it seems you are saying.

If that were the case then Yao Ming is the greatest legend of all right? Most all star votes. Millions and millions of people know about him all over the world.

I would put emphasis on being a winner and trendsetter in the sport they play in.

Im sure there are also some race car driver legends, Many hockey legends that i don't know of because i never pay attention to the sport and aren't around people that do.

Household name doesn't qualify a legendary status anymore than some of these shitty bands i see with tons of friends and followers from their high school days. Popular they are. Local legends they are not.

Who is a legend to Yao Ming? Might be a very telling answer?

Mpossibly, but shouldnt be the basis of legendary status.

Huge influence. Him and Jens basically created the class.
