Russia already retreated to the Eastern part of the country. They don't have the military power expertise or economic strength to keep this up. Ukraine isn't going give up. The longer this lasts the more likely Putin will be taken out by his own country, one way or another.

Russia can't win without using nukes. And using nukes is suicide. This was a huge fuck up. But it was pretty much their only chance of delaying the inevitable collapse.

    Russia can't win.

I agree they won’t win this. But I think they can fuck things up for a long time. In fact The closer to losing they get, the more itchy they’ll get and desperate. Maybe that’s why we are seeing more and more just brutal attacks on civilians. They feel like if they are going to lose, they’ll burn the place down on their way out.

True. But I think that's a lesser evil than direct conflict via NATO. I think direct conflict between Russia and NATO ends in nukes and more pain and suffering by an order of magnitude.

We should definitely use all soft power we have and continue to provide all help possible, short of weapons which would require new infrastructure. Basically, if it is portable by truck we should keep them flush in it (as well as any other supplies, food, medicine, etc).

And keep ratcheting up sanctions until Putin is gone and Russia agrees to significant change.

I find it interesting that supplying Ukraine with everything they need to beat Russia doesn’t anger Russia as much as the US doing it themselves. Of course if it was our troops and our military doing everything right now it’d be over and everyone knows that but Ukraine is getting a TON from us and Putin obv knows this.

I think the plan was to take all of Ukraine. After that they would have moved on to Poland, etc.

Putin didn't know his military was so poorly supplied, trained, or organized. Nobody can tell him bad news because they'll be killed if they do.

Russia is dying. Regardless of the outcome here. But if they could have successfully taken Ukraine they would have been able to hold out longer.

Their skilled population is 50-60 years old. They haven't had proper training or education since the USSR fell.

Tuberculosis is highly endemic in Russia. Multi drug resistant TB.

In the early 2000s 1/4 of the population had been exposed to AIDS. What was Russia's solution? They just stopped tracking it. The numbers they have to report to Putin look much better without that kind of data...

Russia is a failed state. They now have no choice but to invade their neighbors to stay relevant by controlling more resources. It's now more profitable to move to renewables than get stuck relying on fossil fuels.

Russia's population is on the verge of collapse. They're fucked.

We don't want to give Putin the choice of a humiliating defeat or launching nukes to save face. Perhaps, launching them in Russia and letting the fallout drift into Ukraine.

Far better for the rest of the world for him to feel like there is a way forward until he's taken out from within or completely loses the support of the population. Or just completely run out by Ukraine.

Best way I can think of doing this is taking him out. One sniper shot.

Yeah, I'm sure that's on the table. The guy is paranoid as hell. He doesn't even sit within 20ft of his own staffers at meetings.

I think he'll be dead or in exile in the next few years.

Ukraine has won the first part of the war. Now it gets more difficult. The territory around Kyiv was hilly and somewhat forested; ideal for Ukraine's ambush war. Now in eastern Ukraine, it's flat and open, better for russia that has superior air power and more tanks and artillery. That is why Ukraine is so desperately asking for planes, long range anti aircraft guns , tanks and more artillery. Stingers and javelins aren't going to cut it here. Ukraine can still win the war but the great loss of life will be unnecessary if west doesn't help.

Strike kills 50 at Ukraine rail station crowded with people

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A missile hit a train station where thousands of people had flocked to flee in eastern Ukraine, killing 50 people Friday, Ukrainian authorities said, while warning they expect to find more evidence of war crimes in areas abandoned by Russian troops.

Photos from the scene showed bodies covered with tarps on the ground and the remnants of a rocket with the words “For the children” painted on it in Russian. About 4,000 civilians were in and around the station, the office of Ukraine’s prosecutor-general said, adding that most were women and children heeding calls to leave the area before Russia launches a full-scale offensive in the country’s east.

The Russian Defense Ministry denied attacking the station in Kramatorsk, a city in Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian leaders accused Russia’s military of deliberately targeting a location where only civilians were assembled.

“The inhuman Russians are not changing their methods. Without the strength or courage to stand up to us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population,” the president said on social media. “This is an evil without limits. And if it is not punished, then it will never stop.”

Britain’s Defense Minister Ben Wallace denounced the attack, saying “the striking of civilians and critical infrastructure is a war crime.”

“These were precision missiles aimed at people trying to seek humanitarian shelter,” Wallace said.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the regional governor of Donetsk, which lies in the Donbas, said that 50 people were killed, including five children, and many dozens more were wounded.

“The people just wanted to get away for evacuation,” Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said while visiting Bucha, a town north of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, where journalists and returning Ukrainians discovered scores of bodies on streets and in mass graves after Russian troops withdrew.

Twisted Russians wrote 'for our children' on missile used in attack on Ukrainian railway station refugees that killed at least 50 civilians - including five children - who were fleeing Putin's atrocities
    • Ukraine's state railway company announced attack on Kramatorsk's station, a city in the east of the country
    • The governor of Ukraine's Donesk region said later on Friday the death toll had risen to at least 50 people
    • Pictures from outside the station showed bodies strewn across the ground. Some were in body bags
    • Other pictures showed wreckage of a missile with Russian text written on the side reading 'For (our) children'
    • Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky took to Instagram to decry the attack, confirming the casualties
    • Russia's defence ministry denied the attack, and instead claimed Ukraine was attacking its own civilians
    • Kramatorsk is found in the east of the country, about 80 miles west of Luhansk in the country's Donbas region
    • Ukrainian authorities have urged residents to flee west as Russia refocuses its military efforts in the country's eastern Donbas region after recently pulling its forces back from Kyiv
    • WARNING: Graphic images
