SG/SF - Thabo Sefelosha (-1.9 OBPM, +3.1 DBPM, +1.2 BPM) Upcoming Free Agent This dude is still a stud defensively, and not quite a lost cause offensively. He can cut and slash and finish at a decent clip at the rim, and is an average-ish 3pt shooter. Would probably be an upgrade over Crabbe and Turner, and could be had for a portion of our MLE (which is a little over $6M). SF - Jae Crowder (+1.4 OBPM, +0.1 DBPM, +1.5 BPM) Contract: ~$7M per year through 2020 I'm not sure this dude is underrated anymore, but his contract is an absolute steal. Has become a good 3pt shooter and somewhat of a slasher, and can still lockdown on defense (I think his DBPM is affected by having good defensive teammates). If the Celtics signed Gordon Hayward or traded for Jimmy Butler, he could be the perfect dude to try to trade picks for. He'd be the perfect starting SF. SF/PF - James Johnson (+0.5 OBPM, +2.2 DBPM, +2.7 BPM) Upcoming Free Agent James Johnson checks off every box in my mind. Need an extra ball handler? He'll give you that at the 4 spot. Good passer? Check. Good defender? Check. 4th Scorer? Check. His Per 36 stateline last year consisted of 17ppg, 6.5rpg, and 5apg, with great defense to boot. That type of player would single-handedly take our team to the next level. This would've been the year to have cap space, as he'll likely earn more than $12M a year, meaning we either have to clear cap space, or figure out a sign-and-trade with Miami. PF - Amir Johnson (-0.2 OBPM, +2.4 DBPM, +2.2 BPM) Upcoming Free Agent One of the most underrated players in the league. Can finish well (72% on shots 0-3ft, 52% of his total shots), and space the floor (went 27/66 from 3pt, good for 40% shooting). Defensively, he's an agile 6'9, 240lbs, which allows him to guard 4s on the perimeter and hold his own in the low post. He'd be a great starting PF next to Nurkic. Might be out of our MLE-range. C/PF - Kyle O'Quinn (-0.1 OBPM, +3.7 OBPM, +3.6 BPM) Contract: $4M per year through 2019 (Player Option for 2018-2019) Another extremely underrated two-way player, who would be the perfect backup C. Last year, he had per 36 numbers of 14.5pts, 12.9reb, 3.4ast, 3.0blk, 1.1stl, on 54% from 2pt range. He could be a starting C in the league. That's a legit statline. Has proven to be a decent mid-range shooter (struggled a bit last year), has touch (77% FT shooter). Has potential to stretch his range to 3pt (only shot 2 of 17 last year). He's a strong 6'10, 250lbs, and is agile for his size. Would be a perfect trade target for our CLE pick. What other underrated two-way players should we target this offseason?
The free agents? None. We have no money for them. The guys under contract? That depends on what it takes to get them, but I would say OQuinn. I want JJ in the draft and that will provide a log jam at the SF position. Im not a huge fan of Davis being a long term part of this team, Leatard needs to go, so we need more bigs. With that said, I, like you, am a fan of Crowder.
if as rumored boston was unwilling to part with crowder to aquire jimmy butler at the trade deadline , I believe we can go ahead and admit he is unattainable for what we would be willing to offer.
Patrick Patterson would be nice, but I'm starting to think that it's more likely they pay him and Ibaka and let Jonas walk.
alan Williams is another undervalued player on both sides of the ball. decent sample sizes too as back up 4/mostly 5.
Kyle Anderson I've wanted us to target him for a while but now I see he has surprisingly good DRPM numbers.
huge caveat here, but, if healthy, tiago splitter was considered a plus defender on pick and rolls and often replaced timay in SA later in his career for defense purposes, not a ball stopper on the offensive side either. NO offered him a contract in free agency that the spurs matched.
Yes, he'd be a good guy that could possibly be had for a minimum contract. Would allow us to do other things with our MLE.
