<div class="quote_poster">Quoting HardCore_BOozer:</div><div class="quote_post">Barkley is a hater plain and simple. I used to like him when he played but I can stand him on TNT.</div> Barkley is one of the best things ever to happen to the NBA because he doesn't pull punches, tells it like it is, ain't scared of no one and is damn funny on top of that - on the ASG when they showed Dr. Phil entering the arena hesaid "Damn Dr. Phil needs to read his own book". Classic. I don't agree with everything he says but he's right on a lot of things and the shape the game is in right now is one of them. The article was right on the money, I mentioned it before in another thread. Too many kids focused on getting highlights on SC, nobody doing the little things that gets you wins. I'll take Shane Battier over Darius Miles any day.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Just-Magic:</div><div class="quote_post">I agree with you. They young players right now don't know any fundamentals. They are all about flashy moves and dunks. That's why today the NBA doesn't have as much players over 50% and even 60% field goal percentage.Back in the older days,it was normal to have a lot of players shooting 50%.They are missing good shooters. I agree with the thing with Tim Duncan. He knows the fundamentals of Basketball.Maybe thats why he is called "The Big Fundamental".</div> I think the powers that be (David Stern) made a crucial error in the 90's, allowing highschool players to enter the nba draft. He saw the short term gain, lots of hype for players such as Garnett, and Kobe, but i don't think he saw what it would eventually do to the game. Sure there are exceptional highschoolers, but for every Lebron James, there are 5 Kwame Browns. I'm not saying Brown won't one day be a very good player, but he obviously could have beniffited from college hoops. They traded long term downgrade in the game, for just a short term buzz.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting cubanballer:</div><div class="quote_post"> I'll take Shane Battier over Darius Miles any day.</div> But seriously, who woldn't? Battier brings so much more to the table and is a very hard working player. Anyways, I agree with the fact that allowing highschool players was just as good as it was bad. Actually its really all bad. What would Kobe, Garnett, Tmac etc have lost if they just went to College for one year and then came in the league.

The zone has to do alot with it, and players should have at least 2 years in College, If they still do not make it then send them to the NBDL. Fundamentals should be emphasized and winning is whats more important. The NBA is all about the bling bling now...I dont remember Magic Johnson wearing spinning necklaces, diamonds danglin' from his ears, and talkin about his hot ride. The new videogame "Ballers" Is all about style and sh*t. The sport magazine covers went from MJ dunking, to LeBron James, with his bling bling, and his eyes giving a cold stare at the camera. THEY DONT EVEN HAVE PICTURES OF THE PLAYERS ACTUALLY IN ACTION ON THE COVERS!!! WTF Well, IT WILL GET BETTER, I HOPE. GOD BLESS THE NBA.
NBA players today are more concerned with flash than fundamentals because if you strip away all the cool dunks and flashy moves & all you're left with are fundamentals, then what you'll get is the WNBA. And who in their right mind would actually want to watch the WNBA? (I apologize to any wnba fan reading this....... I'm just being an idiot) Seriously though, the ratings for the NBA aren't as good as it has been in the past and of course the NBA office recognizes this. They realize that the younger generation are showing more and more interest in flashy moves they see in street ball and in AND1 videos. And the youths of today account for a large portion of the nba's profits so it only makes sense to adapt to the trends of the younger generation (from the money making point of view). Just like most of you here, I would much rather prefer players focus more on fundamentals than flash. You can still have highlight reel dunks/plays just as long as the fundamentals aren't sacrificed in the process. That's also why we're seeing more and more Europeans coming into the league. They usually have more sound fundamental skills than most of Americans and that's why winning teams that utilize the European market (i.e. Sacramento) are doing so well.

QUOTE] I suspect a large number of JBB posters... and all the ppl who made Miles 3rd in the draft out of high school while Battier stayed in college for four years for lack of interest.

B. Diddy exemplified exactly why yioung players are being so harshly criticized. Not just for their game, but dedication. His excuse for not making the early morning meeting was "8:30s too early for Breakfast." You are getting paid to do what you love to do. Play Basketball. Tons of people would kill for people like his position and super star status, but younger players(some, not all) don't realize the gift and position that they have been given. The whole Flash vs. Fundamentall arguemnnt is dumb. the NBA needs ratings, and the players like flash. Its as simple as that. On a side note, WIth the players we have todday, the straight-out'a-high schoolers, and all the flash they have, and "lack of effort" that they display. The one's who are defending themselves etc,. WHat if they were the pioneers. Would they not be in the same position Barkley, West and others are in criticizing young'ns?
