Kung Hei Fat Choi Vancouver Whitecaps FC fans! Today marks the beginning of both a new year for the Chinese Zodiac, as well as a new year of training for our men’s team with Whitecaps FC beginning their seven-week journey to MLS First Kick on March 10th.

2012 is known as the ‘Year of the Dragon’, the luckiest symbol in the Chinese Zodiac, and one player in particular who’s hoping for some good fortune is striker Etienne Barbara. The Maltese international – who was named North American Soccer League (NASL) MVP last season – is in camp with the ‘Caps aspiring to earn a contract.

Union trade All-Star Le Toux to Vancouver for allocation

In one of the most surprising moves of the offseason, All-Star forward Sébastien Le Toux was traded by the Philadelphia Union to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday in exchange for allocation money.

“Just got traded to Vancouver! Saddest day for me in my Philadelphia Union story,” Le Toux tweeted earlier Tuesday. “Still can't believe it.”

Le Toux glad for fresh start with Whitecaps,
    feels wanted

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Maybe Sébastien Le Toux was happy to see a few familiar faces. Or maybe that grin was there because he knows he can start anew in Vancouver with the Whitecaps.

“I’m always happy,” he told reporters on Monday with a laugh after Vancouver drew with Seattle 1-1 in a preseason scrimmage. Indeed, he has reason to feel that way.

Philadelphia – and all of the well-documented reasons and reactions that came out of his trade from the Union to the Whitecaps – is a thing of the past. Le Toux, a forward who had two outstanding seasons with the Union after his first MLS campaign with the Seattle Sounders in their inaugural season, sounds excited to have returned to the West Coast.

“It’s always great to be a part of a new team,” Le Toux said. “So far, it’s been great. My new teammates welcomed me very well and I feel comfortable to play here and the new coaching staff is great, too.”

    Valentine’s Day Video Love Letters

Tuesday was Valentine’s Day, a day where young and old come together to celebrate love. There are many ways to celebrate, such as long walks on the beach, candle light dinners, and candy hearts. We here at Whitecaps FC like those ideas, but were wondering what would be the best way to celebrate the most romantic holiday on the calendar?

On February 13, we sent a beautiful bouquet of blue and white flowers to Seattle Sounders FC, Montreal Impact, Portland Timbers, and LA Galaxy, and on Valentine's Day we delivered special video love letters, which you can see below.

    Feel the love!

Vancouver lock up summer DP signing in Robson
    [IMG]

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Scottish contingent continues to grow in Vancouver, as Barry Robson is set to join the Whitecaps in July on a free transfer from English Championship side Middlesbrough.

The midfielder, who becomes the club's second Designated Player on the roster, has signed a pre-contract agreement and will link up with fellow Scots head coach Martin Rennie and assistant Paul Ritchie following the conclusion of the English season.

Whitecaps FC defeat Houston Dynamo 1-0
at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic

KISSIMMEE, FL - In their second match at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Florida, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-0L-0D) defeated Major League Soccer rivals Houston Dynamo (0W-1L-1D) 1-0 on an overcast Sunday afternoon. Sunday's results guarantee that Vancouver will now play in next Saturday’s Disney Pro Soccer Classic final at 5 p.m. PT as Group One winners.

A first-half penalty by off-season acquisition Sebastien Le Toux gave the Blue and White their second win in three days at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Though they missed a second penalty opportunity before the break, Martin Rennie’s young side held on for another productive result, with the weekend victory making it three wins in a row for the ‘Caps this preseason.

    Squad shows artistry
Second win secures spot in Disney Pro Soccer Classic final

The stars were out in full-force yesterday at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, with top-honours going to silent-film 'The Artist'. Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, Whitecaps FC shone equally as bright while showing some of their own artistry in a 1-0 win against Houston Dynamo in Orlando, Florida. The result guarantees the 'Caps a spot in next Saturday’s Disney Pro Soccer Classic final at 5 p.m. PT.

Recap: Whitecaps outlast pesky TFC for Disney crown
    [IMG]

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Vancouver Whitecaps left town with the title in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic on Saturday night, but hoisting the trophy turned out to be a far tougher task than most at the tournament expected.

Midfielder Camilo Sanvezzo scored in the 10th minute and goalkeeper Joe Cannon came up big when he had to, but Toronto FC’s makeshift team of trialists and reserve players gave the first-string Whitecaps as much as they could handle in a 1-0 decision in the championship.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC add midfielder Floyd Franks
29 players now on MLS roster

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the acquisition of midfielder Floyd Franks to the club’s Major League Soccer roster, pending receipt of his international transfer certificate. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“I’m very pleased to add Floyd to the team,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “He’s different than a lot of players that we have. He brings aggressiveness and he can play a number of different positions. He’ll add great depth to the squad.”

Canadian rivalry revisited between Montreal and Vancouver
    [IMG]
Impact and Whitecaps go way back

Under the big lights at B.C. Place, the Montreal Impact will play its first ever game in Major League Soccer against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday (6 pm ET; TSN/RDS in Canada, MLS Live in US), a game that will be filled with pressure and excitement.

These two teams share a rich Canadian rivalry in North American soccer, having played some big games over that time. We take a look back at some of the recent matchups between the teams from La Belle Province and Beautiful British Columbia.

'Caps set to begin busy May with Edmonton trip

BURNABY, B.C. – The Canadian Championship looms.

For the Vancouver Whitecaps, that means a busy schedule, with up to eight matches in the month of May. It all starts with Wednesday’s match against NASL side FC Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium (10 pm ET; Sportsnet West and Sportsnet Pacific in Canada).

“With the number of games we’ve got, it’s an exciting time for the club,” midfielder John Thorrington told MLSsoccer.com at Burnaby Lake field on Monday. “Now we’ve got this Canadian [Championship], which is a big goal of ours and a big objective of ours this season.

“Everybody’s excited because everybody’s going to get a chance to play and stake a claim in getting more and more minutes in and showing the coaches what we can do.”

Late barrage books 'Caps place in final

VANCOUVER, B.C. – It got a bit hairy at times, but the Vancouver Whitecaps are through to the Amway Canadian Championship final mostly thanks to two goals from Sebastien Le Toux.

Vancouver’s 3-1 win over FC Edmonton at BC Place on Wednesday gave the club a 5-1 aggregate win over the two-legged tie.

Yashir Pinto put the scare into the ‘Caps on 54 minutes and put Edmonton within a goal of levelling the tie, before substitute Le Toux beat David Monsalve with a goal in the 75th minute and tallied a second in the 87th minute.

Darren Mattocks, making his return from burn injuries suffered in late March in a cooking accident, scored an insurance goal with the game’s final kick to round out the win.

Whitecaps FC host Toronto FC to open Amway Canadian Championship final series

'Caps host TFC in Amway Canadian Championship final, 1st leg

Continuing their pursuit of a first-ever Voyageurs Cup title, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-0L-0D in ACC) host Major League Soccer rivals Toronto FC (1W-0L-1D in ACC) in the first leg of this year’s Amway Canadian Championship (ACC) final on Wednesday evening.

The Blue and White will be a determined side in this two-leg final series, as Whitecaps FC have come close to winning the ACC title on a couple of occasions. They advanced to this year’s final after getting past North American Soccer League side FC Edmonton in the semifinals. The ‘Caps host a TFC squad that are looking to put a woeful start in MLS aside by claiming a fourth-straight Voyageurs Cup title. Though they have played in Vancouver before, the first leg will be TFC’s first-ever match on Bell Pitch at BC Place.

    Recap:
'Caps, Sounders tie 2-2 tie in wild Cascadia opener

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Cascadia Cup rivalry matches in 2012 promise to offer plenty of drama if the opening match is any indication.

Seattle's Fredy Montero scored a 90th minute equalizer as the Seattle Sounders came back twice to tie the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-2 at BC Place on Saturday in a wild first match of the 2012 Cascadia rivalry series.

Vancouver looked set for the win after Camilo scored with a free kick that found a way through a crowded penalty area and surprised Seattle netminder Bryan Meredith for the late 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute.

Whitecaps left back Alain Rochat opened the scoring with a marauding run down the left in the 12th minute. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, Vancouver saw their lead disappear on Eddie Johnson's equalizing header early in the second half.

Whitecaps FC head to Toronto for Amway Canadian Championship decider
    [IMG]
'Caps and Toronto FC level at 1-1 on aggregate

Looking to win their first-ever Voyageurs Cup title, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-0L-1D in ACC) visit three-time defending champions and Major League Soccer rivals Toronto FC (1W-0L-2D in ACC) in the decisive second leg of the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship (ACC) final on Wednesday evening.

Just like last year’s Canadian Championship finale, Whitecaps FC travel to Toronto’s BMO Field looking for a positive result after a 1-1 first-leg draw on Bell Pitch at BC Place last week. With The Reds holding a slight advantage after scoring an ‘Away Goal’ in Vancouver, the ‘Caps will look for their first win at BMO Field since Canada Day (July 1) 2008. They meet a TFC side who will be keen to win a fourth-straight Voyageurs Cup title after a challenging start to their 2012 MLS campaign.
